Douglas created best Romeo ever filmed because I always thought that Shakespeare’s Romeo had fragile romantic soul that resented medieval violence and was inclined to melancholy and submission to the fate ( later being very common for 14th century highly religious and superstitious society)- Douglas just nailed it! Juliet by Heilee was convincing in the beginning when she managed to be naive young girl; however, when the unwanted marriage plot started to develop she rather played spoiled angry child than desperate and deeply in love Juliet - especially in scenes with her mother and friar Lawrence… she looked, moved and spoke like typical demanding American girl of our days - completely out of Juliet’s character who had no choice but to die escaping hopeless situation of medieval woman with no social right to decide her own destiny… However, this movie is my favorite of all ever made ( and I watched them all! ) - other actors are incredibly brilliant ( even small part of Apothecary was OUTSTANDINGLY BRIGHT) as well as music, costumes, decorations and sets, IT ALL WORKED GREATLY FOR CONTEMPORARY VISION of this immortal love story ❤ It seems that every 50 years or so Romeo and Juliet must be filmed again because every new generation reads their story a little differently… Thank you for this interview, it was a pleasure to see and hear Douglas and Heilee

To be honest, as much as I love Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld, but the fact is the story is about an infatuated 17 year old hitting on a sheltered 14 year old. It wasn't actually love, it was infatuation and lust.

Out of curiosity I rewatched all previous Romeo and Juliet movies and was stunned that versions that I truly liked before feel old fashion and unnatural! Even 1968 film that I thought was very good doesn’t fit my current vision of Romeo and Juliet ( Olivia outplaying naiveté and Romeo being too smiley…) I didn’t like 1996 version AT ALL being generally against supernovas of Shakespeare’s plays… This movie truly fits young generation vision, I thought all grim critics were either old or jealous 😂
