Mr Macron decided to do strategic signalling. The outrage and medial coverage serves his purpose. It was directed on one hand to mr Putin, on the other hand to Americans. France, as a nuclear power has a real weight in such game, because both NATO and the USA simply can't ignore hypothetical scenario of war between France and Russia. Therefore it presses Americans to hurry them to vote the funds for Ukraine. It also presses other allies and French public to increase effort to help Ukraine below this boots on the ground treshold.
It also sens a warning to Russia. France has many options in developing scenarios, i.e. to use French Foreign Legion under the auspicies of Ukrainian Foreign Legion. He can also use regular army only to guard western Ukraine and in this free Ukrainian soldiers standing there to go on the frontline.
Mr Macron might be bluffing- but it is a serious bluff which will be effective because no one really wants to check it.

Nato should never have been expanded to the East. We promised the Russians we would not do that and then did it anyway. If Russia put military bases on the Mexican border, the US would never stand for it, so why are we surprised on how the Russians acted in Ukraine?
We should have never agreed to not expand in the first place. We gambled on the 90s being "the end of history", thinking Russia and China would become more like us, and we were gravely mistaken. We've become more like them, if anything.

The best moment to enter a war is when the enemy has a bad position, as this means you can enter the conflict and win it while spending the least amount of time, and the least amount of resources.
Ukraine cannot win on its own, that much is clear, but if it can as much as put Russia on its back foot, that’s a good moment for the West to step up.

It should be noted that Ukraine has not asked for troops. They have asked for military aid so that Ukraine can defend itself. What is disappointing is that countries like the USA have failed to supply the arms that Ukraine needs. While it is fair that isolationists do not want to send troops, it is short sighted to stonewall needed aid in Congress.

The US involvement in Vietnam started by helping out the French sending just a few advisors and ended up with US fighting with 500000 troops there a decade later.

@@AmonMMA Very true however they have the Foreign Legion which is a formidable force loyal to the French and has proven itself in the battlefield in several occasions in my view if their strategy was to retain their overseas territories was imperative the expansion of the Legion.

It won’t be you fighting in anything, we have professional soldiers doing this. That’s their job, that’s what they signed up for. And the compulsory national service will be instituted only in case of a serious threat to the national security of a country, some people “floating the idea” doesn’t mean anything. There’s a reason we gave it up in favour of professional militaries and career soldiers.

I didn't see a russian soldier in Kiev lately... The frontline is like the WWI between 1915 and 1917 : trench warfare. Ukrainian took a village in the south, russian took one in the north... but the war killed hundred thousands young in both camps, by the will of a single russian guy : Adolf Putin or Vladimir Hitler...

In Stalingrad and many other russian offensives in the eastern front like Bagration, the russian losses were more than huge and 3 to 4 times what Germans were loosing, despite these more than huge losses, they won in the end. Ukrain received just enough help to not collapse... but if nATO increase her help, Russian knows the conventional war is lost. Using strategical nukes won't save Russia, then they won't use it at all, their nuke warning are pure bluff. Russia has more to lost than any other in a nuke contest. Nuke against nuke countries does mean no one can win... Still, Putin could be tempted to use tactical nukes... problem, if UK and USA haven't truly any policy towards tactical nukes, France has lots of tactical nukes and the french policy authorise their use in a conventional war, because France considere it as different than other nukes. Then if French had troops on the ground there, Russia would not be able to use them as easily as if Ukrain troops were alone. Putin has then 2 reasons to be aware of french and other NATO troops in Ukrain. In a pure conventional war, few NATO troops would be sufficient to push back Russian troops and Russian wouldn't be able to use the joker of tactical nukes.

If NATO troops were to enter in Ukrain with a no fly zone above Ukkrain, in a conventional war, Russia would loose, easily. They have been put in stalemate by an army 5 times weaker than russian army, still Heart made the difference, and when you're too confident, you can be disapointed.
If Putin engaged most of his army in Ukraine at first, it was because it was so sure the game would be over for Ukrain in few days. Now that he had done the big msitake, he doesn't want to recognise it, then he stays and is unable to play another game than grind meat for both armies. Pathetic. It actually makes sense that the West would consider attacking Russia when its position is weaker, rather than do so when it is stronger.
It makes sense to attack a nation that is winning a war when you really don’t want it to win, yes; but it is also sensible to consider joining a war when you think the enemy’s position is weaker, BUT not for long unless you join.
The West very likely doesn’t want to waste resources fighting Russia when it isn’t the only strong enemy out there in the moment. It will prefer to not get involved unless it can win while using the least amount of resources, and spend the least amount of time at war.

If Ukraine was being supplied with the equipment and munitions to fire artillery 1:1 with Russia they would already be pushing back the invasion.
