May 24th 1979, I was fifteen years old, watching Top of the Pops and everything changed. Tubeway Army's performance of "Are friends electric?" was nothing like I'd ever seen or heard before. I was mesmerised. I bet that I didn't blink once.
I hate to ask BUT ARE FRIENDS ⚡️ ELECTRIC’….. oh please take me back to 1979.. I heard this song 🎶 and I was 13, I was like who us this gorgeous man? Did all the research.. and over 40 years later , still a huge Gary Numan fan!!!! Yes we all know things in life change, but Gary’s style of music has changed, and SAVAGE and INTRUDER are amazing!! Gary still has it!! Totally amazing!! I am seeing Gary Numan on March 11, 2022…The Intruder Tour… in Toronto , 🇨🇦 Canada.. May our Lord and Saviour bless Gary and his beautiful family!! R.I.P. Paul Gardiner & Cedric Sharpley…taken from this world to soon, but never forgotten … Take care everyone!! Luv LA .. Gary Numan is pure gold…📀🎶🎹
I can't get enough of this. All the other guys in the band are such dudes, lol....& then there's Gary Numan. He's spellbinding, so comfortable in his strangeness. A beautiful alien.
Was 13 years of age when the song came out. I am now a young 55! lol Just now hearing this song for the first time, and absolutely love it. Going to use this song in my rock and roll Pepper Video update! Hell yeah! lol Join Pepper Freaks!
Living Ornaments limited edition records? I am italian, I think I read on a music magazine of that time the record master was going to be destroyied after a short time. But it looks it never happened...
Strange how things go. I was a Kraftwerk fan and the videoclip was also broadcasted here in Italy. So to me was not a whole new thing but I was fascinated at once. It was the third record of my life. Only sooo later I found out it was so important for the future pop electronic music. I feel myself as one guy in the beginning of the '60s listening to the Beatles at the radio and thinking: "Oh, these guys are cool indeed!!"😄
When I heard this for the first time I was like a sleeping dog who pricked up his ears and woke up with a wagging tail. No denim flares. No double-neck guitars. No silly collars. No pretentiousness. Just a show of electronic defiance that would piss off everyone from classical music snobs to "punk rockers" LOL! Almost everyone who claimed to have "taste" in music at that time hated Gary Numan. And what was to come later (John Foxx, Human League) would render them hyperventilating.
On this day, May 24, 1979, music changed forever. This hit No. 1 in UK and caught everyone - the masses and musicians in seminal electronics bands - unaware. Where the hell did he come from?
Nah... his best song is Thats Too Bad. But i like the compilation CD "the plan"... and, mmmm... i think i Still got this lp somewhere in this house after all these years
I can connect myself to all these lyrics. I live a lonely life. I could probably ask if friends were electric myself, since the closest people i know as friends are on minecraft servers. Sigh
im 44 at some point I gave up on new music or newer music,didnt like the sound of it! so I went backwards, : ) I grew up a rock/metal kid in bands,then when I wasn't in bands and older,I got into,Joy Division,the Cure,the Clash,The Smiths,Numan,Depeche,the Jam,and so on : )
I hope the kids I taught at CCGS remember this. My class rocked when it came to Movement to music ( The boys didn't like the word dance - but hell they could shake it ;) )

One of the greatest singles ever
Genius. Cuban heels, tunic shirt, white PVC belt. A mood-filled sideways glance. A kind of music no one had heard before.
I love what they are wearing . Billy Currie was a very good looking guy too. Time can be so cruel.
This song will never be boring or old to me.
Epic! I will never tire of this sound. 1979 & forever!! How anyone can put thumbs down to this is beyond me!

Great comment.
Ganz alleine hat er den Kurs der populären Musik für immer verändert.
Er ist ein echter Künstler, niemand kann es leugnen.

my old friend john was engineer in studio to this band , he was given an oberheim synth as a gift
rip johnny boy
This was even before friending on social media. Friends are now literally electric.
The best piece of electronic music ever created. Takes me back to my childhood, but at the same time it still seems so futuristic. Amazing track!
This is still the future of music!
This is the sublime tune that changed my musical life at the age of ten. Forty one years after it hit No 1, I still get goosebumps. 🎤🎸🥁🎹🕺♥️
Love the clothes. Very stylish.
Bowie is an efective influence... but the musical advance exploring moog and synths are absolutly efective too in Numan´s work!!! I love this guy!!!
Beautiful , one of the best tracks from the eighties ! Gary soo charming, cute !
1979
Great tune! I bought this album when it came out in 1979
Saw him in concert at the Hammersmith Odeon, Sept 1979 with OMD as support. Still remember it vividly, and was truly a great show :)

Saw Gary Numan in Birmingham, England. Ziggy Stardust, lightning strike, across my Face. Spiked Hair, Mum made Me lie down in the back of the Car 😂❤
Ultravox Billy Currie looked so nice.

High quality video which is a treat to see. IMMORTAL track. 'Friends' forever. Thanku Telekon
Lucky to have seen Gary two nights ago in Melbourne. Easily the best concert I've seen in years. Maybe the best.
When I heard this for the first time I was like a sleeping dog who pricked up his ears and woke up with a wagging tail. No denim flares. No double-neck guitars. No silly collars. No pretentiousness.

Gary Numan predicting a phenomenon would come along. Facebook: Yes friends are electric indeed! ^_^

Incredible sound-works, for the time it was a hit, & none of us could figure-out synths, like this, lol ♡

OMG HE IS SO CUTE I CAN'T 😍
Are Friends Electric and Cars, two of my best Gary Numan classics but his new stuff is equally good as well.
It's September 2019 and this is still super fresh

This song really sets the mood when there's a full moon outside just lighting up the black, blue, and purple sky. Anybody else agree with me?
Nah... his best song is Thats Too Bad. But i like the compilation CD "the plan"... and, mmmm... i think i Still got this lp somewhere in this house after all these years
Your kidding mate. That's Too Bad is just a so so punky rock track. This track was a ground breaker. No comparison
I was just thinking how it fits this warm, rainy spring day full of electric birds and sultry flowering trees...
Excellent tune from the late '70s, early '80s collegiate days!
Yeah play those drums Cedric!.
Great moment of music my friend
The note sequence during the verses sounds like euphoric innocence, that's why we love it.
Love this song :)
Beautiful Gary.
Top Music in a brilliant quality!
Awesome love numan forever
AMAZING quality on this footage, of another seriously underrated progressive and cutting edge musician and group. Nice job posting this one man!
Me personally, I’m a straight up R&R guy... But I’m so happy that I get this!! It’s so fucking awesome!!
going to see Gary Numan on 1st July at 53 Degrees, Preston - can't wait :D
And now I'm alone where I can think for myself about ordeals and issues... and things I just don't understand.
I thought it was little deals and su's.
@@darrenjones3784 It is. A reference to Su Wathan, his one-time girlfriend.
Classic tune & clip!!

The minimoog sound during the verse is the best synth sound ever captured on tape
Should be next to Mona Lisa in the Louvre.
Cool as fuck he was . The head movement and posturing . Sound him

Nous ne sommes pas venus par hasard, nous avons été entraîné 😌
