They did. Eating behaviors are the number one factor as to why they are this way. Obviously there are some conditions that make it harder for others to lose weight and keep it off but ultimately its your decision. Allowing yourself to become this obese is a decision. Most rational people see themselves getting bigger and change their diets or start being active( doesn't always have to be the gym) Things like walking and jogging even boxing, something that helps you sweat excessively. This is an extreme version of laziness and inability to recognize the dangers of weight gain. Obviously many of them put on weight after trauma or other life changing situations but that's still not a viable excuse because you see yourself getting bigger, you feel the weight and the loss of mobility that should instantly motivate you to change but these people decide not to. So definitely yes they chose that life to a large extent because they have more control on navigating what they eat and how they live.
