A Little History
The 1963 Studebaker Super Lark R2 was a high-performance variant of the Studebaker Lark, featuring several impressive upgrades that set it apart from the standard model.
Engine and Performance
The Super Lark R2 was equipped with a 289 cubic inch Studebaker V8 engine fitted with a Paxton supercharger
This powerful combination produced an estimated 289 horsepower at 4,800 RPM and approximately 303 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 RPM5
The supercharged engine allowed the Super Lark R2 to achieve impressive performance figures, with some examples capable of running the quarter-mile in the high 13-second range at speeds of around 103 mph
Transmission and Drivetrain
Many Super Lark R2 models came equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission, though some have been upgraded to modern 5-speed TKX transmissions for improved drivability

The supercharger played a crucial role in enhancing the performance of the 1963 Studebaker Super Lark R2, transforming it into a formidable compact muscle car. Here's how the supercharger boosted the Super Lark's capabilities:
Power Increase
The Studebaker R2 engine utilized a Paxton SN-60 fixed-ratio supercharger, which significantly increased the power output of the 289 cubic inch V8 engine
This supercharged setup, known as the R2 Super Jet Thrust package, was rated at 289 horsepower, nearly 50 hp more than the normally-aspirated R1 version
Boost Pressure
The Paxton SN-60 supercharger was tuned to feed up to six pounds of boost into a sealed Carter AFB carburetor
Top Speed: The supercharged R2 setup increased the Lark's top speed to an impressive 132 mph4
This was a considerable improvement over non-supercharged versions and made the Super Lark competitive with much larger performance cars of the time.
Mid-Range Performance
The supercharger provided a notable boost in mid-range power, giving the Super Lark excellent passing ability and overall drivability
This made the car particularly potent in real-world driving conditions.
Competitive Edge
The supercharged R2 engine gave the Super Lark a significant advantage over other compact cars of the era. Most competitors, including the Ford Falcon, Mercury Comet, Chevrolet Corvair, and Plymouth Valiant, couldn't match the Super Lark's performance, with only the Valiant able to break the 20-second mark in 0-60 mph acceleration among early 1960s compacts
Customization Potential
Enthusiasts found that the supercharged R2 setup had further potential for increased performance. By adjusting the supercharger pulleys, it was possible to increase the maximum boost from 5 psi to 6 psi, allowing for even more power with additional tuning of timing and carburetion8

Wow , I never heard of this car before
this car was my chilhood
I'm in Australia and I can remember seeing an article in the Sunday paper in1978 about a driver being clocked doing over 120 mph on the freeway in Brisbane Australia. It caused confusion in the police force as they couldn't believe that such a sedate looking older car could achieve these figures. Subsequently the police didn't charge the driver to the full extent of the law, and me well I just wanted to know more about these funny looking super chargers.👍
That sounds like the greatest car advert ever
