Taking the country to the edge of nuclear war before President Clinton of the US talked the Pakistanis down and the Indian army forced the Pakistani forces from a number of strategic mountain tops.

@@williamhiggins842 well Sikhs always remained on the Indian side since the partition between India and Pakistan. Majority of Sikhs fled away from Pakistan and came to India because you also know that life as a minority in a Islamic country is hell because of all the radicalism especially when the country is like Pakistan which was formed on the basis of religion itself. Sikhs have been serving the Indian armed forces from a long time and are one of the most fierce warriors. Their stories of valour and sacrifices are unending and I will run out of space on UA-cam if start explaining their bravery and courage during the wars. So yeah majority of Sikhs came to India. There might me some still in Pakistan but we don't know there condition there.

Bofors guns won us the war. Himalayan conflicts are short and brutal mostly because craggy mountain terrain with thousands of metres of drops dont much allow for errors, and arty bombardments were the safety margins. Not to say it wasnt filled with brutal close up fights like the taking of tiger hill, but the infiltrators had the high ground and without the artillery evening the odds, things may have been a lot harder. They also fought as bravely as our men, shame the pakistanis refused to take their fallen home. Valour should be rewarded even in death.

@Shturmovik Krokodil Yes, along with the SEPECAT Jaguar. We don't have many dedicated CAS aircraft, something to do with the AF's doctrine idk. But the thing with gun emplacements is they're permanent. They're used for suppression, and when enemies have the height advantage and are in a bunker, you best hope they're suppressed else you're getting shot up.
My uncle worked at the Bofors factory and helped build those guns back in the 80s before and during the big bribery scandal.

Yeah that tension never went away. I blame the Brits and their dumb maps. They made these two nations who traditionally hated each other share a border along an area that was highly disputed, just because they wrote their borders as such. Now neither side is gonna give anything up to the other, because that wouldn’t be beneficial to either of their countries interests.

Some bodies of Punjabi soldiers of Pakistan were taken back with calls from higher authority in Pakistan Army power circles, some of them were burried in the hills by the Indian Army with respect and the rest are still in the Mountains.

Hey MajorSamm, I don't know if you will read this ,but, I have no words to thank you for covering the Kargil war from an Indian perspective, we really appreciate it. My family has a long tradition of sending its sons to army for the service of nation in all its glory. The sons of my family have participated in almost all major military engagements, right from the malaysian and burmese campaigns of ww2 before the independence, to all Indo pak wars after the independence. Kargil war in particular is more close to my heart as it is the most recent and my own father gave his service as a military physician during the war. Trust me, he rarely talks about it, but when he does it always amuses us to know about the amount of bloodshed that happened during such a brief period. Now its my turn to uphold my family customs, and I will try to join the military just after I am done with my med school( yes my mother didn't want me to go in the military without a medical degree) . I once again thank you for uploading this video.

Everything about this video is brilliant. It shows the worry in the civilian population, the viscous strain of mountain warfare, the heavy employment of artillery, the use of precision strikes with aircraft, the tactical use of helicopters, and finally the sad outcome of the war. Absolutely amazing how you can teach about a conflict without saying a word.

Read about the story of Yogendra Singh Yadav, how he assaulted and wiped out two pakistani positions, thought to be dead, and turned up alive to his Army base after they "posthumously" awarded him a gallantry award.
I am a Yadav, and every time I hear his name, it's like my chest puffs itself full of pride and my heart with joy. What an absolute madlad honestly, fought tooth and nail and survived despite multiple injuries, a true hero.

Just for you to know . Indian army used one artillery division and two independent artillery brigades to batter Pakistan army , that's nearly 870 artillery guns . Artillery was the reason why india won Kargil war . The arty fire was so intense that pakistan army couldn't even pick their dead bodies in the open
There was no Pakistan army. Those were para millitary infantries plus maybe Northern regiment. That's all.

The last 20 seconds represent the pointless of any war conflict. Lives are lost for nothing, and the pain of the family is for good. For some mad politicians and their chiefs who want to sell weapons. War is a huge business.
Normal people can live a normal life without killing each other. But politicians will not send their own kids to the front line of the war, no... they will send some, for them, unknown people to get killed or kill for their (politician) wallet.

Pakistan even refused to take back their own dead. The Indians had to perform the last rites. Sad.
Remember watching these clips on a daily basis on national TV during my school days. Worrying when my dad who was in the Navy would have to leave if the war expands.
Rumours of Pakistani submarines lurking close to Mumbai and movement of Pakistani nukes nearer to the border, Indian Navy ship designation numbers being painted off and each night emergency calls for sailors and officers of a particular ship to report to duty, etc. Those were days of anxiety.

Usually, it takes 3 soldiers against 1 defending soldier in a plain area, it becomes 6-9 for 1 in mountainous areas similar to the Himalayas. Indian casualties were smaller than pak's, all thanks to the artillery support from Bofors (and other arti pieces), MBRLs, and guided/un-guided airstrikes.
I'm happy India is dominant I that area, Pakistan is just internationally hated

One of the primary reasons I think is a lack of exposure, there is little of any footage or news making it's way out of Kashmir, even today. But I try my best to find whatever footage I can from those sorts of areas because they often are the most interesting. Thanks a lot for watching man.

What a fun mix of equipment, saw some MiGs mixed with Mirages if I remember my delta winged planes correctly. Neat mix of ground equipment too.
Yes, we kinda use everything. Big guns are Bofors, and small arms back then could've been anything from an AK to an SLR, and the INSAS thrown in.
If anything our equipment is more diverse now, we still have the MiGs, Harriers, Mirages and Rafales (with potentially an F16 derivative or even the F35 up for procurement), we use Soviet Mi8s alongside Apaches and our MBT is T90. Even small arms, the latest inductees are large batches of AK 203s and Sig 716s alongside Israeli and German guns.
One downside? Integration is basically impossible. Combined arms offensives are impressive logistical feats for the likes of NATO, now imagine that with our grab bag style equipment.

For ground attack we use SEPECAT Jaguars, frontline fighters are the Su 30 MKI, the Rafale, the Mirage and the HAL Tejas which i'm told is delightful to fly by the pilots, but those tortured souls used to fly MiG 21 Bisons and flying that at low speeds and altitudes is like wrestling a horny bear while clad in honey and also on fire.
The navy also flies the Sea Harrier and the MiG 29 off the carriers, i think they're EOLing though.
My father's friend from Pakistan is a veteran of the Kargil Conflict, he told us that the fighting wasn't fierce when the conflict started at first but the end was the most fiercest because of close interactions between both armies
The war is the most recent example of high-altitude warfare in mountainous terrain, and as such posed significant logistical problems for the combating sides.
Not at all the most recent. The US did plenty of ops in high-altitude regions in Afghanistan. As did Russia in the Caucuses. This may have been some of the highest altitude combat ever done but not the most recent example of it.
Don't forget China getting cocky and getting schooled by the same Indians in their own backyard

something which can only be matched by tejas mk1 and mk1a and the mig 21s have already started to be taken out of service
@@KatyushaRockets retired afaik, the last few batches are getting replaced with the Tejas LCA and its Mk I. The MiG-21 Bison's career was bookended by Maj. Varthaman downing an F-16, what a madlad.
@Mig-23 Flogger-M not quite, the Bison is heavily upgraded, and has a superior radar to the older F-16s the Pakistanis use.

I like how you included the grieving family at the end. Its important not to glorify war, in all actuality war is really pathetic and serves no end. War is like chopping the head off one of those greek gods, you chop one off and another grows back in its place.

Wish more people knew about this conflict. The men in uniform out-performed in every aspect in this conflict. They are some of my heroes. It's a lot different operating in a far region of the world in the name of country as opposed to on home soil. Lest We Forget. Would love to meet some of the veterans of this conflict.
The infantry men had to carry 25kg russian ATGM on their backs to destroy the Pakistani bunkers in the mountains, because helicopter support at that time was not there.And the point is here not carrying those ATGM but the point here is carrying those ATGM on their backs on a mountain which is more than 16000 ft to 18000ft and carrying those heavy ATGM with their Battleload with rifles, ammunition and also carrying those with instincts that you will not get ambushed by enemy in the rocky mountainous terrain of Kargil and doing all these things without any oxygen cylinder. This was the morale of the Indian soldiers, even against the odds they did everything they could and in the end result a victory came. There are countless other stories like this and not just from Kargil war but from every war Indian armed forces have fought wether it be the 1947-48( Kashmir war), 1962( Sino-indian war), 1965( indo-pak war), 1967( conflict at Cho La and Nathu la with the chinese), 1971 ( Bangladesh liberation war) or wether it be Operation Pawan in fighting the Sri lankan civil war against the LTTE( even though it was a disaster politically).
This was also a very socially important event for India, resulting in a renewed nationalism

In your videos, war is raw, it's brutal, it's out of one's control. But, us people, living in modern comfort, need to be reminded that war is exactly like that. It's constantly & painfully unforgiving.
There is also something more special about this one. The conflict shown here is from the POV of the defender and not the aggressor. Ultimately we won but, the cost paid was too high.

The early variants were. They jammed frequently and weren't designed for high altitude warfare. The later variants solved some of these problems but it still has some major issues.
@@ralphjones1159 The guns itself it's alright, but the problem is the poor quality of ammunition and parts. Soldiers have to regularly clean their guns because of corrosive powder the bullet used. Later variants have solved some of the issues but the problem of poor quality control still remain.
Early gun variants are usually, shit, i hear the M16 was particularly hated by early vietnam soldiers. That said INSAS was trash and the army refuses to use them. Most INSAS are used by cops now and the Army's inducted the AK 103 and a variant of some SIG as its frontline guns. And also troops in himalayas prefer full power carts over 5.56 for range and stopping power.

India had mostly Soviet & British small arms at that time. With ordinances from countries like Sweden. Nowadays, they're of course buying stuff from Israel maybe Russia, maybe the U.S. and also making their stuff. Pakistan has Soviet stuff but a buttload of MG42-type machine guns which I'm not sure the origin of.

Pakistan mostly uses weapons of Chinese , American and German origin and some few from local and other sources .
Well for Bharat/India as an Bharatiya/Indian, well , whatever good we can import we are going to. From whichever country. But that's not the case. If we put it all in a timeline , till 1971 , we were heavily dependent on Britain and for our defense equipment. Then till Early 2000s we were dependent heavily on USSR/Russian Federation for our military imports. Occasionally we also bought stuff from Sweden and South Africa. Beside these countries , France and Israel are some of India's largest weapons and ammunition suppliers too. But recently We have been trying to have pur own indigenious solutions and also came with lot of mixed success of varying degrees.

Actually we had Su-30's during Kargil war but they were not ready for combat. They were under evaluation by Indian airforce. Later we returned them and got new Su-30mki version.
