“Wasn’t being used in a way that maximized his skill set.” Exactly, in my eyes the whole problem with the Steelers offense. This team should be way better. Waiting.
I like to call Matt Canada the "great augmenter." Meaning, what ever problem you're currently facing, Matt Canada will turn that dial all the way up to 9 or 10.
Did you know that Pickett was Dead Last by a wide margin against zone defense last season? (He threw 1 or 2 TDs to 6 INTs). I have no idea if that _can be_ attributed to Canada. In fact it might be The Reason that they're keeping the offense simple.
@@choosecarefully408 The problem was there before Pickett even started to play. Canada "kept it simple" with 3 different quarterbacks, pretty sure simple is the only thing in his playbook.
@@jasonmooreplease120 Damn! You're _right_ I'd _forgotten that_ Trubisky started the season. Let's get the townsfolk with their torches & pitchforks immediately!! We want Canada gone!! (Uhh, the OC, not the country). Seriously though, I'd forgotten.
@@choosecarefully408it’s a tough exercise to have to defend a bad coach just because he has a bad qb. In my observation, both things can be true. The qb play is bad, and the coordinator is bad.
@@chevy4x466 Oh, definitely. I guess between my coaching experience plus social psychology background I'm assuming a few things. But they're all things we've all seen. How many movies have we seen where someone good at something destroys it because the abusive parent or coach makes them hate it? With Fields, Nagy would Not Let Him practice with the team's receivers, then was forced to play Fields due to injury before ever making up for that error. Would _you_ feel wanted under those circumstances? Then the narrative comes out with the new coaches that they are trying to make the team work for Fields. In real life, no one *wants to hear about* _your_ problems. So that could be where this all is. That he's bonded with Moore but no one previously on this team is what makes me think all this.
Appreciate the chart. I’m sure his openness was pointed out to rookie QB Pickett at nauseam during film studies. Positive regression is written all over Diontae
Well now we have three clues that while OC MC _is _*_A Problem_* he isn't the only one. Yes, running limited schemes limits yourself, not the opposition. But 1) we _just saw_ Johnson get open *a ton* despite this. 2) We also saw him make drops. 3) We see him get open but not get thrown to. 4) Did you know that Pickett was Dead Last by a wide margin against zone defense last season? (He threw 1 or 2 TDs to 6 INTs). That's not Canada's doing. & if anything, it might justify Tomlin's excuse that they need to limit the offensive schemes if he has trouble reading those. This is getting to be a bit like everyone saying Dan Jones isn't the problem, the Giants' receivers are. Except we don't have footage of them dropping passes, we have footage of Jones failing to throw to them when they get open, or whiffing when he does. Everyone's _expectations_ are hindering their analysis. Pickett is handsome. But right now he's almost exactly where Justin Fields who had a terrible HC, worse play-calling, a worse WR room to work with was at the same point in his career (& oh yeah, his HC didn't allow him to practice with his receivers before being forced to put him into games) & somehow is/was considered a bust. So people aren't _really reacting_ to reality.
@@choosecarefully408 the diffrence is pickett is way more accurate then fields has ever been and had 5 game winning drives his rookie season and only threw one pick the last 8 weeks of the season the 2-6 stat means nothing considering all those picks came in the same 2 games
Appreciate the vid - high production, well done. However, "looking at the film..." I'd rather look at his NextGen rankings among Wrs. Yac 47th, Yds per Route 56th, Yds per Target 95th, Yds per Rec 83rd, Separation 49th, Cushion 100th, Drops 2nd (that's bad), Contested catch rate 83rd, etc.... there's more but ya get the point. He just isn't elusive and he's horribly inefficient. People keep looking at those 147 targets and project it again, or more. The Steelers would have to be insane to keep throwing to a player who does nothing with it. Johnson is good for short yard passes that go nowhere... that's fantasy death. Making matters worse his Qb is among the worst starters in the league (PIT drafted him in desperation mode after Roethlisberger). But hey, hope my competitors buy the Diontae hype. Good luck.
@@duskthunder9274 I admit he's done very well in preseason. Shocking considering how bad he was. But let's wait til regular season to start heaping praise. "Top 15"??? That's bold.
He is over rated in my book. Its not just his catch rate, he consistently loses yards after catch especially the most important yards. He'll catch a ball in 3rd and long and only need a yard or two for the first but he will juke backward and gain nothing or even lose yards. Its so frustrating to watch, he always thinks he can out run the defender instead of just getting the couple for sure yards. He also lead the league in dropped passes in 2021. He makes some amazing catches but then when it really matters he doesn't. He's good... don't get me wrong... but people talking about how he's top tier just drives me nuts.... he isnt

I think hes gonna go off this year because its the last year of his contract. he'll get paid just not by the steelers
His entension kicks in this year so he has 2 more years
