- A lot has happened to Project PP since the first episode. First up we get an update from Darren on what he has found out about the little Mini R52 Cooper S and what we have planned. Then it's time for me to get my hands dirty and fit the new uprated brakes and suspension. A big thanks to Bilstein for helping source the suspension components for the car.
Don't forget to let us have your questions about car set up and we will try and answer them later in the series.

Well done Pete, I hope to see the Pedlars garage for coffee, car meets and vehicle modifications.
Nice to see you out of your comfort zone. That white mini in the back needs a separate video!! Cheers
Oh it’s gonna look ace when finished. It’s have an iconic race livery 😜👍
Love the mini progress. And it's great seeing you working on the mini💪.
Thanks 👍
Evening PP, love the look of the Go Cart behind ya. Great to see progress being made with the Mini. 👍🇬🇧
It’s a very cool thing 👌
Awesome start, looking forward to every episode, Thank You 👍
Thanks for watching!
Such a cool video! I’ve been very excited about this series and getting to see this mini transform. Great job Sir Pete!!
You and me both!
Hi Ped
They say variety is the spice of life, and you manage that in spades. Keep up the good work🤗
I try 👍
Brilliant, can't wait to see what you are doing with the inside. Just ordered a mini convertible. He's been manufactured, now just have to be patient and wait for him to make the sea journey to NZ. 🚗
How exciting
Brilliant banter👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent, I can see it now, Petrol Ped restoration series 👍
I doubt it 😂
Really interesting to watch, Peter. Great dynamic between you both.
Good to see you getting stuck in, too.
Best wishes from Wirral!
Thanks mate. We had a lot of fun making this 👍
So so many variables with the geometry, to think every single vehicle has its own generic settings. 👍🇬🇧
Yeah it’s a mine field 😬
Morning Peddlerz and Ped. Great video and very informative. It's great to get hands on with good old car mechanics and a Haynes manual! Brilliant explanations of everything you're doing with great kit upgrades. Can't beat the banter either... Always check your nuts 😂 looking forward to seeing the project coming along 👌🤓
Thanks 👍
Been waiting for an update on this mini! Wasn't disappointed!
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Another cool video thoroughly enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
R56 rear arms from steel to alloy
Looking good
Looking forward to this !!
👍
Love it. Thank you Peter 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Been looking forward to this. 👍🏻
Hope you enjoyed it!
See U guys in the next Rd. 🏁🍺
👍
Great watch as usual Peter. Darren said on Saturday it was a fun day doing the filming. The rest of the plans for the car sound to notch too.
I had the bilsteins on my mulgari clubby which reviewed last year and you know how good the set up was on that 🤔😏😉
I sure do 👌
Good to see you enjoying getting your hands dirty
It was great fun 👍
Great show guys
Cheers 👍
Great video Ped, did get a sneaky look at your workmanship on Saturday 😉
Wish I could have been there too 😢
Good to see how it's really done. Like your reference to Mat Armstrong. He's my other go to you tube channel
Mine too 👍
Looking forward to the first drive...in Season 3.
Looking forward to Ep .3. I just finished my R53 refresh myself, so I'm comparing notes on what you guys are up to! Unfortunately I melted my #1 piston due to possibly due to lean condition at w.o.t., so currently in the middle of an engine swap. So after all is said and done, make sure you check out those injectors, fuel pump and filter and vacuum lines!! 😁
Will do 👍
Love to see you getting your hands dirty! More of that!!!
More to come!
Bilstein are a top product.
The fun on the rear is the arms were threaded with the bolt ( its a strange looking thing ) so you may need to nut-sert the holes before putting back together.
Thanks for the heads up 👍
Well done PP the f1 teams need a mechanical man like U . 👏👏👏🏁
😂😂😂
Re Built my mini suspension with KW coilovers, neg camber arms front white line rear arb, rear adjustable arms etc etc had it professionally set up and was one of best handling cars I've owned. Big brakes also helped spirited driving. Light wheels and good tyres all added to fast road driving. The guy I sold it to couldn't believe how well it went round corners.
What tyres are you running?
Sound great. That’s our plan too 👍

First!! Evening all! Hope everyone is doing well and has a lovely week.
Morning!
Hi ped it must be very satisfying working with someone who is very talented and who knows the vehicles outside in and really is first rate at what they do as Darren from mulgarri obviously is
I thought you were talking about me for a moment 😂
A few very important items needed whilst upgrading the r53 suspension. Adjustable top mounts a must. along with front lower arm poly bushings r50 front rollbar with poly bushings standard drop links work best. Roll centre inserts sized to wheel diameter a must. for the rear poly bushings for the rollbar and poly rear arm inserts along with bottom adjustable tie rod arms top arms left standard this will give you a lot of scope to enable a set up to your liking.
Still plenty of stuff to go on the car. Wait for the geometry set up vid 👍
Love the content of mini cooper s r52... I own a mini cooper s r53 and seing how everything is being done and fitted is going to help me a lot in my future upgrades on mini.
This builds going to look so good ,R52 S owner myself and already your putting my car to shame 🤦🏻♂️
Great 👍
😂😂😂
I still think the old wheels would look super cool on my homemade log splitter ❤👍
😂😂😂
Great, good to see you do some wrenching 👍
😂😂😂😂
They are good shocks I bought some and the wait time was like 6 months I went with kw in the end did it around a year ago.
Yep 👍
Every day is a school day when it is car maintenance for me. I am a huge petrol head but mechanics and fixing is not my thing I guess my Dad was the same so he passed nothing onto me so anything I know which is very little is self taught. Interesting content and I am looking forward to more.
It sure is 😂
I have those bugweg brakes and they are great on track and road the only downside is I had those discs and found them noisy I have changed to grooved ebc discs now and they are silent! Great setup tho that it will be really good balance for fast road and the odd track day. The other change I found big was r56 rear arms and a bigger rear arb Superpro or whiteline with the froth stock arb is perfect!
Nice 👌
Nice one ped
Cheers 👍
Can we expect PP overalls in the merch shop anytime soon...........Let me answer that for you 🤣
Great idea 😂
So you did _most_ of the work then, Pete? Looking forward to the suspension setup , really interested in that. Those brakes would stop a 747 at full chat!
I did the front offside. Darren did the other 3 corners 😜😂
Mini torque A great guide to rebuilding a mini 👍👍 those bottom shock bolts usually snap so well done on that not happening
Might have had some help 😂
My R56 Mini spun and burst the brake pipe. Absolute nightmare. At least ended up with nice new copper brake pipes from the abs pump to both rear calipers though
Hi Pete. Great to see more Mini content! Question - what are the calipers? JCW?
They look like the budweg calipers. Very similar to the jcw ones :)
They are from Budweg. Basically a copy of the factory Brembo set up from the Gen 2 JCW 👍
Interesting that you choose the Bilstein dampers. In the German Mini Community you will not find many that favour this combination. I'm looking forward to the driving experience that will be reported. Does the brake manufacturer deliver all needed certificates to get the car - brake combination officially approved? To optimize a car in Germany without losing its legal status is pretty difficult and I'm looking to find a brake that can be officially approved without mayor investigations and tests.
We don’t have that problem here in the UK. As long as they work and pass the annual MOT test you are good to go 👍
Those brakes look seriously nice, will you be doing a parts list at any stage as I think a set of them would look awesome on my R53 ?
Yes. At the end of the project we’ll put a parts list with costs together 👍
What brake calipers are those red calipers? And which set of coil overs, B14? they look great
They are by Budweg. A copy of the Brembos that you find on a JCW 👍
What is the code for the bilstein dampers and appr. Cost? I am looking to purchase a r52 which is low ... it scratches on speed bumps...
Serious question Pedders. Are you looking for a track-day nutter or a fast roadster? Track days are maybe 3 or 4 times a year but on the road, every weekend. Guess how most people would use it?
We are going for a fast road car that can track every now and then as we are a little limited by the gearbox 👍
Electric ped, wish I had known you where looking for a project, I have a r52 jcw last of the 52’s. It does need some help ped time 😂🏴👍
This one came with a healthy budget too 😂
@@PetrolPed I’m loving this project, watching closely as mine will get an overhaul soon, i use it still but needs some upgrades. Do like my mins even at 52 lol🏴😂👍 it’s the jcw
@@PetrolPed I feel a bit offended as u say this came with a healthy budget, im 52 ped just like the r52 lol, a petrol head mechanic with a bad back so can’t get my energy in2 the minis. I have a r53 jcw as well it’s special . I do have a healthy budget if I was prepared to spend on it. I’m not at moment . Thanks for your reply’s. Love your channel for glasgow 🏴👍
Hi, can you explain what are the main difference between the Bilsteins and OEM suspension? Also, do the springs make a difference e.g. is a larger diameter better than a narrow diameter?
Firstly big difference is we can change the ride height of the car. We’ll be going lower but not silly and also have a bit of rake in the car. Lower at the front than the back. Then there is how the spring and shock allow the wheel to move up and down. How it compresses, how it damps the bumps, how fast it opens back up after a bump. It will be firmer then the OEM shock but just better at keeping the tyre in contact with the road.
Hope that helps 👍
Ask him what the engine is balanced down to? What model Bilstine are those. Why couldn't you used the breaks off of your old car, you did get them off of the totaled car?
Hi, how much unsprung weight did the bigger brakes add to the car and will the end setup account for this?
Not sure the weight different between the callipers but the new ones are heavier. What we lose in unsprung mass we’ll make up for in braking power 😂
Re suspension set up - can you ever have too much static caster on a set up?
Thanks for the question 👍
Have more faith in your ability Pete.
Also wear something you wont mind getting dirty.
safety foot-ware not slippers my son.
and great job , now do the rears as I see the passenger side was done for you. LOL shiny red calliper on passenger side was a a give away.
Yeah I only did the front near side 🤫
we didn't see you put the bolts back in the break disc ???? - or did i miss that
You missed it 😜😂
@@PetrolPed what time on the "time line" please
14:42 There is only one screw holding the disc on. Then when you put the wheel on the bolts go through the wheel and disc and secure into the hub. We didn’t do that bit 👍
U what? Feel like Mat Armstrong ? :D Haha
😂😂😂😂
Hello hopefully third a first for me yippee.
Nearly 😜😂
Hello mate
Hi 👋
Petrol Ped getting stuck in
Trying to 😂
Haynes manual 👍
Great weren’t they 👍
@@PetrolPed yes they are
This car mechanic stuff isn't that hard, you just have to think of it's like building a watch, just bigger.
And building a watch is easy 😂
ua-cam.com/video/6ynsqrcCD1U/v-deo.html
Amazing how undressed a car looks without all the body work cosmetics attached 😅
I know right 😳
Is it me or do these two look a bit like Brothers? Same mannerisms and everything?! Though Peter has a few more follicles than Darren!
LOL 😂
😆
R52 seats are the absolute worst.
What’s wrong with r52 seats?
We are changing them 👍
Looking forward to the updates but awkward watch. Way too much unnecessary waffle, video should have been 10 mins shorter.
I know it was a bit long but a bit of banter was part of the fun 👍
I wouldn't have a clue what to do there.. Looks like you've got a good and paitent teacher though. Looking forward to the rest of the build..
He’s very patient 😂
