The scenes with Martin and Ross were reshot (with the same lines!) because William Schallert and Paul O'Keefe were not in the pilot episode (that was unaired, but retooled for this episode). However, Patty, Cathy, and Richard were in the pilot and every shot of Patty Duke with the short dark hair (and shaggy dog) were taken from the spring 1963 pilot episode. Martin was played by Mark Miller (father of actress Penelope Ann Miller) and Ross by child star Charles Herbert (who also passed away in 2012).
I'm 35. When I recall watching old shows on Nick at Nite in the 90s, I always remember My Three Sons, Mr. Ed, Dick van Dyke, etc. But as soon as I heard the theme song again I instantly remembered watching this show.
I first watched this in the early 1980 on KPLR-TV 11 in St. Louis. They were an independent TV station at the time and showed a lot of the classic reruns. I do miss that station now.
Martin works for the New York Daily Chronicle but the image outside his Boss' window is San Francisco (Bay Bridge). I think the test pilot show had them living in SF 's Pacific Heights before Brooklyn Heights.
I always wondered where the shots of the mirror part came from. I don't ever remember seeing this episode where they got re-used after they appeared in the pilot. It wasn't till I saw the pilot on UA-cam a year or two ago that I finally found out. And I'm talking about when the show was originally on in the 1960s, not reruns in later decades - that's how old I am.
I thought Richard's exclamations, "Holy cow, I've got a harem!" and "Boy, are we gonna have fun!" were hilarious and realistic. I'm sure his 1960's sitcom mind wasn't thinking beyond dating, holding hands, and affectionate smooching. Still, Patty set him straight: "Who's we?!", she asks. "How am I gonna know who's who?", Richard responds sheepishly. "Yoooou'll know", Patty asserts with certitude, quashing Richard's fleeting dream.
The scenes with Patty and Cathy interacting were more sophisticated than I thought was possible (or at least done) back then. The way they circled each other? Even modern shows, like Dove Cameron's "Liv and Maddie", don't do it that way, but have very obvious split screens in which each character stays on one side, or equally obvious use of body doubles with their backs to the camera, and never turning their faces (as Patty turned hers in the mirror scene).
I may be wrong, but I think this is the ONLY episode in which they actually employed *chromakey* (e.g. @8:00), which allowed them to “walk around each other.” All other episodes only used (always seamless) split-screen shots to show both characters facing the camera. I always find myself scrutinizing those shots to see if I can detect a shadow that accidentally gets “chopped” at the dividing line, but I have yet to see that-and I have the entire series on DVD. They obviously planned/staged those split-screen shots VERY carefully.
@@ahcapella Funny you should say that. I just watched a scene in another episode where they were showing Cathy holding a paper in reading position from behind and in one hand from the front. They switched perspectives at least three times, and apparently they didn't catch it or couldn't be bothered to fix it. lol
@@mariantreber8055 it's one of the number one problems in Hollywood. It's sad because so many people don't believe it's happening or don't know it happened at all that there will still be more victims.
I saw THIS!! Why would they replay the PILOT!!! The only difference is they changed the Martin and Ross characters and Cathy didn't play the bagpipes when at the end when Martin was talking to JR on the phone
This was indeed the last show of the first season {May 20, 1964}. It featured portions of the original unaired pilot episode (with a slightly different cast and setting).
The original pilot was filmed in Hollywood. After ABC "bought" the series, it was decided that production would shift to New York, in order for Patty to be able to film more hours, due to less restrictive child labor laws in that state. With the move also came a shift in the series' locale: since they were filming in New York, writer Sidney Sheldon decided the action would take place IN New York {Brooklyn Heights, to be exact}. And half of the cast had to be recast after the pilot.....
6:39 - WHOA! ; 6:44 - technical glitches - they tried to do the near impossible in the pilot, but here, they reedited it and it still has a goof. Watch closely!
@@shawnagreen2942 "WHOA again!" 6:52 And the linens Cathy picked up from the chair magically reappear! And that chair has moved! Patty had good reason to look puzzled! :D
In loving memory of William Schallert, Eddie Applegate, and most of all, Miss Patty Duke.

Charles Herbert who played Ross in the pilot, can be added to the list - having passed away in October 2016.....
God Rest their souls!! I love them so much!!

I watched it when it first aired; we kids were crazy about this innovative show!
Thank you for this! I love how Cathy practices acting like Patty.

Me too!
It was the Pilot! I saw it!
Lucille Ball first did the mirror image bit with Harpo Marx.
The Marx Brothers did it on their own before Lucy and Harpo redid it.
I am new to this show .this is my favorite so far.tysm for posting these.
I LOVE those high-heeled shoes!

Crazy how the brother knew them apart but not the parents

Maybe they really used a secret clone.
This show had some great writers. How old was she during this show maybe 14 or 15? Totally adorable!

Patty duke RIP😞😞😞😞
Ahhh memories, sweet!
Just like Lucy and Harpo Marx!
I remember this show! What a lot of people do not know is that Patty Duke was bipolar. Her so-called guardians abused her.
I was three to six years old when The Patty Duke Show aired!
So, I remember this show!
Was she MK ultraed, I wonder? A lot of people were/are messed up on that.
Sadly, it's reasonably common knowledge that Patty Duke was sexually molested when she was doing this show.

In the portrait photo, Patty looks like Princess Leia!

Because the pilot was unaired at the time. Nobody saw it.
Just like Hayley Mills in The Parent Trap!
Patty and Cathy 😍😍😍
Ansy Ansiosa yes there so awesome 😁😁
God, who is that fricking idiot who keeps down thumbing.

never knew this show was originally set in San Francisco - with Martin (Mark Miller) working at the San Francisco Express....

That was a completely different girl than the first one....that's not even the maid, which would have made more sense.
Yeah, it's like they didn't even try. lol This girl didn't even have black hair!

Can't believe i just learned she's Sean Astin's mom
And , I believe, Richard is Christina Applegate's father. I'm not gonna double check.

This episode seems to give homage to early unaired footage from the show?
18:50 What did Richard say? I could’ve sworn I heard “harem”.
Yup, he did.
2:54 She looks like Chloe Grace Moretz from that angle.
How much do u like patty duke
I LOVE Patty Duke!
I watch this show on Pluto tv
Lol took me a second to realize they were using a mirror. Couldn't get rid of the angled light rays in post edit I guess lol
2:01 Look at the seats. And she says the airplane was full. What airline is this. The chairs look kinda....stupid.
So does your comment.

I don’t know how Patty ever forgave them for what they said about her when they thought she was Kathy
Can you please upload Smokey and the Bandit 1.

You'll note that it's the same idiot who thumbs down everything. Fricking idiot.
Her accent is pure Irish, if you want to hear a Scottish accent, watch Monarch of the Glen.
