Deke reminds me of hunter, both very comedic and having distinctive methods of been agents , that adds extra energy to the show
Ik he was originally cast as Virgil in season 5 but the cast and crew loved him so much they recast him as deke after last season I wish I could’ve been behinds the scenes to see how much fun Jeff has but I hope deke can finally pull daisy like I’d be fine if she just gave him a kiss on the cheek or something he deserves it but I love how chloe Bennet and Jeff ward have a similar relationship in real life 😂

the perfect explanation for the campiness is this episode is literally told through his perspective to Agent May... Deke would totally exaggerate everything just like he did in his framework video game last season. I love how this show can do ridiculous things but justify them in a way that actually benefits the characters and the story. so damn good
The whole episode is Deke's narration. Wonder how much he added for the drama
Here's a simple definitive answer to the timeline question: Mac says he doesn't recognize that car from when he was a kid, so it's a different timeline... Like the car, anything else could be different as well, like when or how his parents died, meeting Deke when he was a kid and not meeting him when he's older.
Also, they literally say it's a different timeline in the episode.
It kinda sounds like the uncle was not that great or close of an uncle in the regular time period...but having to take care of 2 young nephews has made him better...hence the nicer car in the new timeline
I assumed Mack didn't recognize the car because Deke helped them "upgrade" it. We saw the kids come home in an older blue car first, which was probably the car Mack was familiar with. But the agent from Deke's "team" told Mack that Deke had been helping take care of young Mack and his brother, bringing them food and toys and a drum kit and stuff. And when Mack said to Deke that his uncle's car looked better than what he remembered (now red and a different model), Deke said casually, "You don't say..." like he knew all about it.
It still could be a different timeline, of course, because of all the things that have been messed up so far in their attempts to "fix" things. I just think the car isn't part of it.

I loved the nods to Wargames, The-A Team, Weird Science, Chopping Mall, Rambo, Short Circuit, Predator, and Max Headroom. Deke's lead singer outfit was a nod to Mike Reno, the lead singer of Loverboy.
Don't forget the Battlestar Galactica reference in the head of the "new" chronicoms with the red light/eye going side-to-side

This one didn't occur to me on my own but I saw someone point out an adventure team also being in a band together is very Buckaroo Banzai.
And short circuit. They also borrowed from Danger 5.
This episodes enemies were short circuit robots with the personality of a Dalek, the mission of a Terminator, and kills people like an 80s horror character. Amazing.
The robots were almost exactly like the ones from Chopping Mall.

It was confirmed in Season 5 that there are multiple timelines when they discovered that they were in a time loop.
I watched Chopping Mall just because of Mack’s references to it, and now they made a whole homage to it!

Nathaniel has lived for a DECADE LONGER.
Mack's parents were alive in the OG timeline, this has been said multiple times. Deke LITERALLY said this episode that Mack and his brother are closer in THIS timeline.
and its tiresome seeing people complain about aos/endgame way of time travel and say its inconsistent or dumb. time travel is not even real. there are multiple ways to go about it. we are way too used to the whole "change the past, change the future" kind of stuff. thats not the only way. endgame and aos operate on the basis that if they change something, its not gotta change the main timeline. it just create alternate timeline. thats it. in my opinion, it actually makes more sense that way
@@johans3164 The problem I have with this is that, if all of this is an alternative timeline, then what's the point of doing all this to stop the chronicoms? They won't change the timeline they are from, they are only changing a different one and thus stopping them in a different reality. And, are they going to return to their original timeline at the end of the series or will they be part of this timeline, living with the consequences of everything they altered? But if they are part of this alternative timeline, then what about the versions of themselves that already exist here?
@@TessaG75 well I hope the season finale answered all your questions I’m still a bit confused but Time travel is one of the hardest things to wrap your mind around and when that’s combined with the theory of the multiverse it’s even harder.
Deke legit says this is a new timeline before him and Mack go see lil Mack. I get time travels confusing but this show definitely is making new timelines

14:26 - Yep. But remember: Deke is telling the story to May so everything you see and hear is from Deke's exaggerated point of view and you have to picture Deke telling May: "Yeah! Damn Robot pulled her out of sight and next thing we know: The wall is sprayed all over with blood and this huge pool starts creeping down the corridor; like someone dumped bathtubs full of blood onto the floor!" (So 90% of what is presented here is distorted by the Deke lens); hence why Deke comes off looking like a saint (A dorky one, but a saint nonetheless) and Mack comes out looking like a dick!. I won't be surprise if one of the first thing we see in the next episode is Mack telling May: "WTF? Naw! That ain't at all how it happened and I'll make you a full report once we are done with all this time traveling BS!"

Mack's parents were alive in their original timeline (Season 4, episode: Watchdogs): This is a seperate reality.
Total Predator handshake between Mack and the D, "Chopping Mall", B horror movie referenced in season 4 a few times, was a huge influence, especially for the design of the robots. Super proud of the Normies for picking up on most of the 80's references, especially Max Headroom. Signed ... Gen X AoS nerd.
Pretty sure Deke's "cover band" is a reference to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, also.

Chris is the first one with the same "Max Headroom" reaction as me after seeing Coulson in the tv (especially with that background).
One small thing I noticed that I really enjoyed was Deke's lyrics being wrong. There were some small differences and then some lines that were totally different - I'm guessing because he couldn't remember all of the words and made stuff up to fill in the gaps. He even changes the baby in "baby... don't you forget about me" to Daisy LOL good stuff. Love this season so far.
I love Mack, but I was really annoyed by how no characters seemed to care about Deke being stuck in the 80's. It was all, "Mack's alive..." and "We'll bring him back" and not one word about bringing Deke back too. Even when they showed up in the base, obviously Yo-Yo would hug Mack, but not one person asked Deke if he was okay too. I was like, come on... I know he's supposed to be the comic relief punching bag of the team, but what makes the show is that the characters are still human and have emotions and deep down they give a shit about one another and we get to see that. So to not see anyone give a shit about Deke really bugged me.
Also, when the F*** are we going to see Fitz again??? (I know the actor was off making a movie, but come on! This has to be a shortened final season, right? So, what, is he going to show up for one freaking episode and that's it? Unacceptable!) I really do miss him. Also, it makes me wonder, if Jemma was altered in order to do what she has to do, then what did they have to alter in Fitz?
YES!! It angers me SO F****** MUCH that no one cares for Deke. Even his own GramGram doesn’t show him the amount of love and care that a family member should in my opinion. No one on the team has taken the time to sit with Deke and talk things through about being taken out of his time. He adjusted in his own with people who didn’t know his pass. He’s done everything on his own. I just want to give the guy a hug:/

Every time they change something it creates a new timeline because in Avengers: Endgame they went back to the main timeline where the changes they made didn't affect there present. Same for Agents of Shield!
But apparently the team isn’t sure they will go back to their normal present timeline otherwise why would they bother fixing this alternate timeline they are now in?
In the second to last episode---- they will time jump to 2018 and in the two-hour series finale--- they will jump to 2023 (where the current MCU timeline is).

Loved the dynamic between mack and deke really allowed the comedic references and seriousness to balance very well.

Jeff Ward and Chloe Bennet have the best voices in the cast. I’m pretty sure that they are traveling through the multiverse when they jump and creating parallel timelines.
The amount of references that the episode has, is huge.
By the way, that killer robot, is more a reference to several movies of the genre of those years, in addition to Terminator, such as:
- Chopping Mall (1986), also known as Killbots, which is where they mostly got their looks from.
- Hardware (1989).
- Runaway (1984).
And another horror movie that I can't remember the name ... if I remember, edit and put it.

Mack’s parents didn’t die previously. Wilfred and Nathaniel Malick died in 1970 which didn’t happen this time. This isn’t what always happened.

Yeah, little Mack is no longer going to grow up into our Mack. He could still live a life similar to the one Mack-Prime lived, including eventually going to the future and meeting Lighthouse!Deke, but that interaction may be different from the one we saw, due to him possibly remembering Deke from his childhood. They were trying to maintain the timeline, but it's clear that they're creating a new timeline in the multiverse. So the question is just 1) can they stop the new-timeline Earth from being destroyed by the Cronicoms and 2) can they ever get back home to their own time. or will they be stuck in an alternate Earth from now on?
If the cheesiness stretches credulity for you, just remember that this was Deke recalling the events to May. So what really happened was probably considerably less playful. One small hint of that was the Deke Squad appearing far more formal when May and Yoyo meet them than in Deke's story. Obviously that could have just been more time passing, but I like to think it was Deke imagining them as some ragtag squad he brought together, when in reality they were trained agents already.

I learned a long time ago not to waste my time overthinking time travel stories because at the end of the day it never really makes sense and all is just some bullshit that someone made up anyway.

The episode seemed to have more practical effects particularly with the deaths. That was some old school 80s blood and gore.
Normies, Mack's parents were still alive in the original present day. They retired and moved away, but they were still alive. 3X14: Watchdogs (timestamps 2:40 & 13:55 & 34:31). This is a different timeline. This is not what always happened. Even Nathaniel Malick is still alive 13 years after he originally died.
I'm glad Nathaniel is actually alive. It would have lowered the previous episode in quality for me a bit if he hadnt, dying from that lousy shaking after all that side story. Hes a pos but the actor is actually really good, "discount Evan Peters" or not lol
The "campy" comes from Deke being the one that tells May the story. So he Dekes up the story.
Roxy Glass was a nod to Ron Glass. He played a detective on Barney Miller, Shepherd Book on Firefly, and the doctor who operated on Coulson in Project Tahiti.

With all of Chris' talk about KITT, Cylons, and, Johnny 5 I now know that he has never seen Chopping Mall because those killbots are straight out of Chopping Mall.
The goal in Endgame was to travel to various points in the past to get stones - thereby creating different timelines - and jump back to their own timeline where the snap happened and fix it. In AoS there is no talk about going back to their own timeline. They seem “stuck” in timelines where all these changes continue to change the future. Chronicoms helped Wilfred Malick stay alive, speed up Insight Project, etc.

@@shortstuff780 Deke being the unreliable narrator, in my opinion, I think the whole story about Russell himself is only in his mind. He made the story using the information from Coulson that picked up a trace from Sybill and deduce that she's trying to build some new hunters.

I feel like the fact that the team is trying to stop the chronicoms means that jump drive time travel works on a singular timeline and not a branching one. It will change their present, though like in Flash or Back to the Future they won’t have memories of the altered timeline. If it didn’t then the only reason their doing it is out of moral obligation.
A new timeline was created in Endgame when Loki got away with the tesseract and they don’t try to undo that, mostly because they’re occupied, but it won’t effect their present.
The MCU version of time Travel is the same as the Dragon Ball Version. You create a different time line by traveling through time.

And just like in DB its possible that the main timeline that we are watching from the start wasn't a straight line and contains bootstrap paradox loops cause someone already traveled back creating the timeline that you are in. Cause its all a matter of perspective.
From their own perspective Trunk appearing in their timeline was always part of that timeline.
Just like Shield going to the future in previous seasons was always part of their timeline.
Just like in the timeline where young thanos does to the future, from their own personal perspective Thanos always disappears with no explanation.
So to simplify it - you can have multiverse theory and bootstrap paradox loops at the same time. Those rules don't contradict each other. And with that you could even explain that Steve Roger always was with Peggy in the main timeline (just like the writers originally wanted).
And the fact that Sousa "dies" in the past kinda confirms that theory. Same with Enoch inspiring the original LMD project.
So if time travel was always part of your original timeline - you are not changing anything by simply traveling back. You just fulfilling your own "destiny".
But you can still change the course of that timeline by doing something that 100% didn't happen in your own timeline.
It's a bit ridiculous that they hadn't figured that out before this episode tbh. Like 2 episodes ago they said Freddy Malick's funeral was in 1970 and he lived until 1976 in this timeline. That and Nathaniel is still alive and hasn't been sacrificed to Hive.

If you go back to 4 x 9, the episode where Aida supposedly goes crazy and tries to get the Darkhold, where Mack uses the movie references, when he's talking with Yo-Yo and horror robot movies in the 80's, She asks him if he had seen "Chopping mall." Talk about full circle.

The timeline first changed last season when Shield went into space and found Fitz. Simmons even says, “we changed the timeline.” This season, the timeline has been further altered. P.S. I’m still waiting on shield to drop Daniel off in 2012, so he can become the Cop in the first Avengers movie.

The 80s were so alive in this episode, their were at least 9 or 10 References from The 80s Biggest Film & TV References. Only thing they missed was Star Wars and Back to the Future.

But it is not that hard! They mentioned in past episodes that it's a new timeline. Even in this episode, Deke says that Little Mack & Ruben are closer in "this timeline." In the original timeline, Freddy & Nathaniel Malick died in 1970; we clearly see both survived past 1970, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. team was surprised, and that's how they found out it was a new timeline.
The robots seem to be refering to the movie Choping Mall aka Killbots witch was talked about in the show by Mac and Yoyo in the orignal L.M.D. story arc when they were talking about killer robot movies.
This really has to be the best show on TV at the moment.

Some tv channels use to call “Chopping Mall” by another title, “Killbots.”
Also while there was a lot of Knight Rider, and Cylon vibes from Sybil's crew on top of the other things you mentioned but there was also a nod to ROM The Space Knight, who was a toy from RONCO toys that had a very long comic book run in Marvel in the 80s before they lost the license. Now it's just "The Space Knights" but ROM is the reason they're a thing.

I use the MCU movies’ time travel explanation for the show too, they are still related, even though SHIELD got his separate way since season 6... so my problem with the timeline now is this: in Endgame we learnt that changes in the timeline don’t affect the original timeline, they just create a new branch of reality (e.g. when the Avengers messed up back in 2012 and Loki was able to steal the Tesseract, it didn’t affect the original timeline, it created a new one, hence the new tv show, which will show us his adventures)... So, if the Chronycoms travelled back in time to stop SHIELD from being created (and succeed), that change won’t affect the original reality from where the team comes from, it would just create another one. So, why is the team going after the Chronycoms to stop them in the first place?! I mean, I love this season, but I can’t find a sense to this.
Unlike Endgame the team can not go back to their original timeline. (The base thing that tony built.)

This is not the same timeline they are going on Endgame rules but no one on the Sheild team understands it fully unlike the avengers since Fitz isn’t there and Jema messed with her mind. So Mac’s parents didn’t die originally and he’s responsible for their death because they only killed them to get to him. That means there’s two different timelines MAC even said his uncles car looks different then he remembered

But for your post game reaction, you seem to trust too much of what happened. That was all Deke's version of things as he told May... That's what helped the silliness (needed after the last episode's seriousness) but it puts all the character stuff into doubt. For example, Deke imagined Mac spent the whole time building models and drinking beer, but he doesn't know.
Remember: Deke was like a curator of the past in that possible future during season 5. I kinda think of him as a live-action inspired version of Booster Gold.

They definitely created an alternate timeline with all that has changed. Deke is definitely living proof of there being multiple timelines (like he said in season 6). If we were using Back to the Future rules Deke would have blinked out of existence when the agents stop the world from cracking because there would have been no need for them to have gone to the future in the first place. Therfore, they would have never met Deke and he would not have been able to come back to 2018 with them. From what I can tell there are now at least three different timelines in Agents of Shield. The first one where are the world cracked apart and they were stuck in a Time Loop trying to fix it. The second one, after they saved the world from cracking apart. Now this one where Wilfred Malik survived past 1970, Nathaniel Malik also survived past 1970 and has superpowers in the 1980s, and Alfonso McKenzie's parents died in 1976. I guess the trick is now getting back to their own timeline after fixing this one.
Also, I'm pretty sure they mentioned that they didn't find the time drive, so they guessed Sibyl got out with it. If have to re-watch it though.
And not a bunch of 1s and 0s trapped in a digital hell? Yeah, I'd like to think so.

This is where the rules of time travel get a bit screwy. While you can make the argument that Deke came from a future that no longer exists, so he should just poof from exisistence, he didn't. But that future's not happening now.
It's the grandfather paradox. You go back in time to kill your grandfather how can you then be born to go back in time and kill him?

I personally think there was a missed opportunity here. The set up of the episode is that Deke is telling May the story. We see them talking about it twice. The episode should have ended with May dismissing his story as being made up, and then a few episodes down the line (SPOILERS)
When Garrett pulls up the t shirt that has Deke's band's name on it and says he saw them open for another band, suddenly it implies that Deke was telling the truth

They're definitely in a different timeline than they were, Nathaniel Malick did not get sent thru the portal and Freddy lived longer and started Insight way earlier. Also, it looks like Mack did not get memories of the new timeline since he has to be told by Deke about his past.

The computer typing/talking and title card reminded me of War Games. Paintball was totally an 80s thing.
So I don't think it actually can be the same timeline if for no other reason than the fact that Project Insight was accelerated. I think whenever they first time traveled in season 5, they pushed themselves into a different timeline, which is why the snap didn't happen. And I think as a consequence of this season they're going to correct course and I think we'll see the snap play out later on this season.
