Michigan Western UP ATV Overland Part 1

- This video is part one of a five day overland of ATV trail riding in the western portion of the U.P. of Michigan. We started the overland in Iron River, MI and spent the first night in Ontonagon, MI. This trip is with my son Kyle and my good friend Jim. A great day on the trails with lots to see. Enjoy!

Hey Rob! Thanks for watching. This was an awesome trip and I want to do something similar again very soon. This year was the first time I have not done an overland since 2018 and I missed it. This setup with the camera was my first attempt on the helmet and could have been better. My current setup is with a new helmet and a well placed camera. The mud and waterholes that we ran into on the trail was limited to the Bluffs area and later, a snowmobile trail we were not suppose to be on. Probably best since that snowmobile trail was loaded with ticks!

ATV Trips are the best. Those woods trails look like a lot of fun to ride. My friends and I travel across Newfoundland, Canada every year and it takes us about 8 days and 800 miles. I make videos similar this about them each year.

Many, those trail SxS look like they’re 10ft tall by 2 ft wide. They look incredible tippy.
Thank you for the comment. Except for the Mass City Bluffs area, most of the routes/trails were wide and flat.

I very much enjoyed the overland in the UP. I especially liked driving across the Houghton/Hancock bridge and seeing the rocket range. That is in Part 3 I believe. I hope you are able to take a similar trip. It is worth it.
What does your bracket look like that is holding your Rotopax fuel tank in the back? I need to do something similar to my 570 and curious how you have attached it to the rear of your rack.

Your question is timely and a bit of a premonition! What type of machine are you and your buddies riding?
Thank you for visiting the channel and watching this video. I appreciate the video feedback. My friend Jim's side-by-side is a Honda Pioneer 500 2018 I believe. My son Kyle's quad is a 2018 Polaris Sportsman 850. My quad is a 2018 Polaris Sportsman 570. We drive a lot of 50" trails and we have electric power steering on both. That was a good choice!

I would one like to take an adventure like you did but I am not sure if my little Suzuki king quad 300 4x4 would make that distance or should I say my body!
The routes are mostly smooth. I do not know a whole lot about the vast array of quad mfg. I am familiar with Polaris, CanAm, and Yamaha. If your Suzuki is comfortable driving down a dirt road, that is 80%+ of the routes in this almost 450 mile overland trip.
We're really enjoying the video series so far. Is this trip doable on an orv (wider than 50") or is much of it atv routes?

A heads up, we ran into some ticks in the grassy areas in Parts 1 and 2.

I'll have to see if I can find and plot out the route, based on your route images in your videos. I'd love to do this on my diesel Arctic Cat atv but if it's a family trip, we'd have the Pioneer 1000 with us too.

Thank you so much. At 25 seconds, the video shows the entire trip and at 30 seconds, it shows the route map starting at Iron River, MI. This would be the most southern portion of the trip. The most adventurous and interesting days for me in this video series is Part #2 and Part #3. In Part #2, crossing through the grasslands and navigating over bridge obstacles and low lands was a blast. Caution, watch for ticks. Then crossing the Portage Lake Bridge, super awesome. Then Part #3, seeing the NASA rocket range and the camp area was tons of fun. During the first week of June, the mosquitos were terrible at the NASA Rocket Range. If you would like the navigation file in GPX, KML, and/or GeoJSON, I'd be happy to send it your way if you provide an email address. In the UP this late in the year, it is cold and perhaps some snow accumulation already. Safe travels and enjoy!
What gps do you have?
Thank you for visiting the channel and watching this video. I use the GPS on an iPhone and/or an iPad, mostly the iPad. I do have a Garmin Oregon GPS and a Delorme PN-40. But, I find using GaiaGPS with my iOS devices works really well.
