- Relaxing morning walk in this beautiful old stone town. Apparently quite busy with tourists sometimes. This morning I have it mostly by myself. I came here after a 40 km horseback ride the day before, and will continue on horseback this day. First a relaxing walk.
What I didn’t know when filming: there’s a tradition from medieval times in this town: putting chairs a bit high up on the wall of your house. That way a witch flying by can have a rest without bothering the inhabitants. You’ll see a chair on a house wall at 10.50. Lovely!
From wiki: “The town's importance was greater in the early Middle Ages, as capital of the county of Besalú, whose territory was roughly the same size as the current comarca of Garrotxa but sometime extended as far as Corbières, Aude, in France. Wilfred the Hairy, credited with the unification of Catalonia, was Count of Besalú. The town was also the birthplace of Raimon Vidal, a medieval troubadour.
Besalú was designated as a historical national property ("conjunt històric-artístic") in 1966. The town's most significant feature is its 12th-century Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river, which features a gateway at its midpoint. The church of Sant Pere was consecrated in 1003. The town features arcaded streets and squares and also a restored mikveh, a ritual Jewish bath dating from the eleventh or twelfth century, as well as the remains of a medieval synagogue, located in the lower town near the river. Besalú also hosts the Museum of miniatures created by jeweler and art collector Lluís Carreras.”

This is one of my absolute favorite walks on your channel, even though it's not my lovely Stockholm, this town had me fall in love with it at first sight. I adore the narrow streets, old buildings, all the decor and the nature ❤

Spain sure has beautiful medieval structures. Been to Toledo, Segovia and Girona. Somehow missed this treasure in Besalu. Thanks for this gorgeous walking tour!

Beautiful walk with lots of kitties. Stunning views from on the bridge and underneath. Freezing cold and snowy here in the UK atm, so this was lovely!

Beautiful place, how did it feel walking in a place older than Sweden itself? Btw, happy 500th anniversary Sweden 🎊👍👋 This was really a “bucket list” type of trip, glad you enjoyed yourself. And somehow I was reminded of Vaxholm(?), with the fortress and all.
A lovely place to walk! I do love to feel some history under my feet. Regardless the 500 year thing many of the buildings in old town Stockholm were already old by the time Gustav Vasa rode in as the newly crowned king of Sweden. One thing I didn’t know to look for in Besalu that I wished I would have known about: the custom on putting chairs on the outside wall of houses, so the witches flying by could rest outside rather than bothering the inhabitants! Fabulous idea!

My brother moved to Spain two years ago. He is currently trying his best to get me to move down there. He walks up to 13 km per day, sometimes live streaming it to me. This looks wonderful btw.
Probably plenty of of good hiking to be found! But a bit to hot much of the year for me to be really comfortable
