    I finally got around to migrate my HA to Yellow and it went absolutely smoothly without any bump. All thanks to Lewis for such a comprehensive guide. Hats off to you sir. Might be silly but just so anyone wondering no, SATA SSD won't work with the Yellow. And in regards to Z-Wave Stick, you just plug into Yellow and boom, starts working straightaway. And finally, zigbee devices, for me the migration radio button in the configure menu, worked without issue. Just make sure to connect your old stick into the Yellow which will also deletes all data from the old whilst migrating to the Yellow.

    Thanks for this excellent video Lewis! My Yellow kit arrived yesterday and I am counting my blessings for having purchased my CM4 in anticipation late last year (when they were 'difficult' to obtain rather than 'near impossible'). I put it all together today and ran the installation with migration from backup. The only 'issue' is the ZHA migration - I have the ZHA backup but have plugged my old stick into the yellow so everything works for now. Triggering the migration when the new coordinator isn't on usb seems to be the sticking point and the forum advice is to wipe the configuration then install from backup so it triggers the migration. But I think I'll wait for more refinement and documentation of that process.

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  Рік тому

      Thanks, glad it was useful! Hmm, can you migrate from the old coordinator to the new one directly without plugging the old one in?

    • @jennyhart406
      @jennyhart406 Рік тому

      @@EverythingSmartHome I tried a straight migration, but it was looking for the coordinator on USB and didn't 'see' the yellow's zigbee coordinator. I'm still on the 2022.9.7 core, so maybe this would be fixed in the 10.1 update I'm yet to apply or in the near future. I also had to uninstall and reinstall the Blutooth integration because of the change in bluetooth adaptor, but as I haven't made use of that integration yet, I just took the simplest fix. Now the new system has been running for 24 hours, I can also report it is running cooler than my old HA install on RPi4 in a Pibow with a Pimoroni Fan Shim. The provided heat sink in the custom case is keeping the CM4 CPU around 6-8 deg C cooler than the RPi4 CPU was in the same environment. Pleasantly surprised by that.

    • @JoshFisher567

      What's harder to get right now is a CM4. It's impossible to find at the regular price. All sights say first quarter. 2023. Not sure how long it would take to get the yellow if you ordered now. I almost went for the POE version but glad I didn't because they had to go through a redsign.
      I did my pre-order on June 10th and my yellow just got here last week. Might want to check out the home assistant SkyConnect. Not shipping until December but a ZigBee/Thread USB adapter for 30 bucks is a heck of a good deal and you know it will work great with HA.
      If you have an older PC you might be able to set up HA on it. I haven't set up my yellow yet. Running HA on a 8 year old NUC but it's starting to act flaky. Neither of the video outputs worked when I installed HA 4 or 5 years ago on it so I'm surprised it has worked this long anyways. If you have a NAS you can run it in Docker but that requires a bit more technical knowledge for setup.
      I believe you can run HA on a pi4 using an SSD now, not 100 percent sure but an SSD will speed it up a lot compared to an SD card. You can get a ZigBee 3.0 USB adapter for 20 to 30 bucks right now.
      If you have an older PC that is not in use then you can download the x86 version from the HA website. You have to image the drive (I used etcher) then put it back on the PC so you will need some sort of adapter. After that turn it on. This is why I haven't set up my yellow yet. My 8 year old Nuc is 10 times faster then when I ran it originally on a pi 3 using the SD card. At the same time I know the yellow is going to work with everything without any issues so that's why I got one.
      I don't think they expected the number of orders they would get. Their crowdfund goal was 150K and they are over 1million now.
      I believe HA is now the second biggest open source project and it's been around for 5 years or more so it's not going anywhere. It's here to stay. If you have a spare pi 3/4 then you could just set it up to make sure it's what you want then order the yellow if it is. You want it hooked up to Ethernet. It works over wifi but adds latency also.

    They still have issues with emissions on the PoE version of the Yellow as of now (30 July 2022), but the non PoE versions are shipped :). I believe the HA team are confident the PoE version will be approved soon.
    It may be there first attempt at partially custom hardware (partially because the Raspberry Pi compute module is not a custom part), but they have put a lot of effort in with it being over 2 years in development. The HA team are very thorough with their testing and quite picky with part choices, so I expect these to be reliable for a long time.

    • @EsotericArctos
      @EsotericArctos Рік тому

      As of October 2022 the POE version seems to have passed emissions testing. Amazing work from the Home Assistant and Nabu Casa team!.
      I believe the AEOTEC Z Pi 7 or the ZwaveMe Razberry 7 will also plug straight on the small header port to add Z-Wave radio to the Yellow if you need integrated Z-Wave rather than a USB Dongle.

      Just hope that your hue bulbs are still set up on the hue hub. If not, you will need to add them back using the serial number. That's the easiest way because the hue bulbs only go back into pairing mode when you delete them from the hue app so do them one at a time or the pairing may time out before you add them to HA using ZigBee (not the Hue integration) making you add them back to the Hue app again. There is also a way to put them in pairing mode but it requires a hie dimmer switch which I do not personally own. This was not fun, especially if you have a lot of hue lights but HA is so much faster for turning on/off lights then through the hue hub.

If I copy the image file using RPI Imager on my PC directly to my M2 NVME SSD using a USB adaptor and then install it on the main yellow board, will it install the Yellow HASSOS when I connect power and ethernet cables, or do I need to fit the blank SSD first then use the USB stick flash method in your video? First attempt to fully backup system and restore it to the Yellow and set path/ID to new Zigbee controller in Yellow FAILED. So, for now, I plugged in my Sonoff dongle into the Yellow and was able to update its path after a restore. On original system I did STOP my MariaDB addon and then did the full backup. First restore on to Yellow seemed to FAIL as I could not get either the MariaDB or the Zigbee2MQTT addons to successfully start... I gave up and went back to the HA Blue. After a day or so I decided to boot the Yellow with the Sonoff dongle attached again and capture some of the Log entries to try and understand what it did not like. SURPRISE! When it powered on, both the MariaDB and Zigbee2MQTT addons started!! After sometime passed, most all of my 45 Zigbee devices reported online. I had about 4 that I had to re-pair with the dongle. Today, all are reporting and working. I had about 5 that needed their location set, but the remaining migrated over their location settings as well.
    Now I just need to learn how to migrate from the Sonoff dongle to the built in Zigbee router on the Yellow using Zigbee2MQTT.
    I have heard that the range of the built in Zigbee is not good, but I would like to test / see that for myself and I could always migrate back to the dongle.
    Still a mystery as to why a shutdown and power cycle of the Yellow and a repower on of the unit allowed both the MariaDB and Zigbee2MQTT addons to work / start???

    One question: should I update the HA Core and OS on my existing install before migrating using a backup? Or will the backup restore fine (for the most part) and would only need to tweak a few things that the updates might have broken?

      @AndrewJonesMcGuire Рік тому

      It's generally advised to restore to the same version you have backed up from, as since the Yellow will download the latest Home Assistant on boot, then you should upgrade to the same version and then backup.

    Thank you Lewis for your effort and sharing, but my question is, is the yellow worth it, or do I buy a nuc just for the home assistant? Could you share your impressions of performance between a pi 4, yellow and a nuc, it would be a good video. Cheers

    • @sygys
      @sygys Рік тому +2

      The yellow is a pi4 only with some additional options like on board M2 SSD. Its a raspi 4 compute model so just a raspi 4. Buy a NUC 10 i7 to get real performance. Running 7 Cameras with object detection on frigate with 40% cpu load. The pi4b will go to 100% cpu load with 1 camera object detection. I really don't understand why home assistant ever released this yellow. I must admit it's pretty good for home automation just like the normal pi4 but with cameras and object detection you should never go for this low performance stuff

    The setup does seem more complicated compared to the usual, mainly due to the lack of a video out. But I guess since it's only used once it's hard to justify.

      @EverythingSmartHome  Рік тому

      Hmm I get what you mean, but the standard Yellow is literally plug in and go - if you decided to go for the Kit version then chances are you may be a little more advanced anyways.
      Video out would have been nice but I think it was a licence limitation (think you have to pay to use HDMI?)

    Thanks for the video. I notice Yellow uses Raspberry Pi architecture. I really like the ESP32-C3 microprocessors, not least for the 5v pin, but ESPHome cannot integrate them on Home Assistant when run on Raspberry Pi! To me this is a serious limitation. A few posts on the internet have said you can overcome this by using platformio but as yet I haven't seen a working example. I'd love to see a step-by-step video, Lewis!

      I'm not sure what you mean sorry, esp32s don't need to be plugged into the Pi for them to work with ESPHome

      @@EverythingSmartHome Thanks for the quick response and apologies for not making myself clear. My Home Assistant runs on a Raspberry Pi 4. However, when I try to add an ESP32-c3 to the ESPHome integration (and I have a couple of ESP32 Wroom already set up), you go through the process of selecting the board and then installing. The process fails at this point. The error says a certain package is missing. According to posts on the internet, the ESP32-C3 is incompatible with Home Assistant because it is running on a Raspberry Pi.

      I'm not aware of any limitations - if your running home assistant OS 32 bit then yes that could be a problem, you should switch to 64bit which should clear up any issues

    • @marian2141
      @marian2141 Рік тому

      @@EverythingSmartHome I am running it on 64bit! The nearest thing I have seen to a solution is "someone with same problem - response is build it on an intel/amd pc" which isn't exactly elegant. I'm wondering about shifting HA onto a spare laptop and junking the Pi. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, really appreciated. Have a great weekend!

    • @EverythingSmartHome

      Yellow has some nice advantages IMO like easily expandable storage (Pi 4 has this too of course but not as eas - yes it's still easy), as well as a built in ZigBee and Thread radio with Matter support whenever that happens. Compute Module should be able to be updated in the future when the new one comes out (not a guarantee but hopefully)
      Having said that, whether or not it's worth it for you is for you to decide - perhaps not if you already have a setup your happy with!
