From Bimini to the Jersey shore, they ran their sacred mission To help the poor unfortunates oppressed by the Prohibition When the Puritans in politics began to play their dirty tricks And outlaw everything that we enjoy, rum boats ahoy! We're gonna get ourselves a drop of the real McCoy Rum runner, rum runner, run your rum right up the line Rum runner, rum runner, rum, whiskey, gin, and rye Run, rum runners, run, we're running dry We're running dry Three miles off the shoreline waits the infamous Rum Row Well, if it's gambling or girls, or drink you want, just ask Havana Joe You won't be taxed, so never mind, and once you've left the law behind You can have it all, whatever is your vice, just name your price It's a free and easy floating paradise Rum runner, rum runner, run your rum right up the line Rum runner, rum runner, rum, whiskey, gin, and rye Run, rum runners, run, we're running dry We're running dry Well, the boats come up from Charleston town, and down from Gloucester Bay They're giving out free samples, boys, and the party's underway Somebody brought a Calypso band, it's loud enough to hear on land And the hold is filled with barrels fit to burst, to quench our thirst If the excise cutters don't get to it first! Rum runner, rum runner, run your rum right up the line Rum runner, rum runner, rum, whiskey, gin, and rye Run, rum runners, run, we're running dry We're running dry Well, the shore patrol is on the way, our machine gun's at the ready God help us if we need it now, our hands are none too steady Well, Uncle Sam is closing in, to take our women, take our gin You've bled us dry with all your revenues! What's left to lose? You can take our lives, you'll never take our booze! Rum runner, rum runner, run your rum right up the line Rum runner, rum runner, rum, whiskey, gin, and rye Run, rum runners, run, we're running dry We're running dry
We're lucky to have them again in Florida soon this January 19th at The Plaza Live. Got some tickets left and it's such a good venue- there are no bad seats!
We have an Irish Festival in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I do hope they show up here. Also, fun fact: "The Real McCoy" is a term that can refer to one of the first rum runners during prohibition named McCoy, who would bring actual alcohol to the states and sell it. Unlike many who did this, he didnt water his product down or anything and so anytime someone got alcohol that wasnt watered down, it was referred to as being "The Real McCoy" because of this guy.
DTFinnMacCool Given the dubious origins that the phrase has, its hard to say exactly when it began. The man i spoke of was William McCoy, a rum runner of prohibition. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McCoy_(bootlegger)
Sleazus Christ Indeed. That plus the sheer anxiety of having to fend off the Coast Guard (formerly Shore Patrol) would be plenty to make the hands unsteady.
God, I could use a good Rum Runner right now, as long as it's of the mostly blackberry liqueur and rum variety. The frozen Bacardi mixer ones are awesome!
I felt a bit cheated the last time I saw them because they started playing this (it was February 20th, 2016, 83 years to the day after the 21st Amendment was passed by Congress, which repealed Prohibition) and Patrick Murphy messed up a tiny bit in the first verse and they stopped playing, but they never finished! You owe me one live performance of Rum Runner, Patrick!

Wikipedia appears to disagree: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_real_McCoy

"Our hands are none too steady" one bad side effect to the drink.

TrollMafia1 Indeed they were both outlawed at the same time but this song is written about alcohol.
