Classism is a big nasty thing in Jamaica. My family and I were vacationing in Montego Bay the weekend after the hurricane. We went into a restaurant on the "bottom road" for breakfast. I approached the young lady at rhe desk, informed her we would like to dine in. She told us to wait "over there: by the door to be seated. 4 of us waited for what seemed like eternity. As soon as a white lookung couple walked in, i said to my husband, lets see if they will be seated prior to us. So then so done. They were immediately approached and seated. I walked out with my family.
Let’s highlight this cancer in Jamaica. When we see it don’t walk away silently… call them out, because it helps them when we say nothing. Silence is Consent . Classism and colorism is what we’re talking about… it is a form of supremacy and a legacy of colonialism black Jamaicans and non-black Jamaicans do this every minute of the day.
