Wednesday is written like a teenage girl's edgy dark self-insert OC. She's goth, broody and dismissive to everyone but get showered with praise - not that she needs it. Attractive boys save her life and then fall in love with her. She has the most stereotypical bad parents archetype, who Wednesday then mouths off to without any repercussions. There's no growth or character to it.

    • @twinshiftyt
      @twinshiftyt 2 роки тому +41

That’s not completely true. First of all it’s is confirmed by the actors in interviews (they are quiet east to find) that Tyler only used Wednesday. And her parents aren’t bad parents it seems and it is clear when Wednesday gets them out if prison that she actually cares for them. It seems much more like she just feels her parents are bounding her true potential and that she would do much better on her own which is common in teenagers. Because they aren’t sure how to express their maturity yet but still feel like they could take control even tho they still need some help. And she isn’t showers by praises, it’s quiet the contrary and people are quiet mean to her specially at the start. And she is often called out for her flaws by multiple people. And she dose grow which is shown by her and Enid hugging which shows that 1, she have learned how to show affection and appreciation. 2, she have grown some more understanding on others emotions. And 3, she’s starting to get comfortable in this new environment and is going out of her comfort zone. That is a lot of change but I do see why some wouldn’t understand that because sometimes it’s hard to see things change when it’s a very subtle change that is shown by a hug. Because, specially in more main stream films or series, they usually go through this huge amount of change but I see this approach more realistic, and it’s great if they want to do a season 2.

I think It makes sense because they’re on opposite sides of this aesthetic spectrum, they have more In common than you’d think because of It. Both will have dealt with comments on the things they like, both like to dress and act a way “outside the norm” (no matter how much the show suggests otherwise, Enid’s sunshine personality and style is not “normal”. She’s also someone who likes things that are ‘alternative’ because she’s so extreme on the girliness.) they both can bond easier because they’ve had the same feelings but for different things.

Not sure why modern writers insist on having Wednesday and Morticia argue all the time when the whole point of the Addams family is that they’re an actually happy, loving, and supportive family, but it makes me want to go back and rewatch The Addams Family and Addams Family Values again.

My biggest issue was basically the point you made. Wednesday is a malcontent, she hates it at her normie school then her parents move her to a perfect school for her and she hates it all because her parents went there and liked it (great reason?). The headmistress and roommate are fine with accommodating her (even allowing her to have a special all black uniform... like, they literally act like she's royalty and make an exception to dresscode for her like she's in a wattpad fanfic) and the whole time she insults everyone and complains. WHAT DO YOU WANT, WEDNESDAY? What would satisfy you and be good enough?
Even Daria had limits to who she'd be snarky and judgey toward and got called out on it. In this show she just gets fawned over for being smug and unpleasant to be around.

When Wednesday belittles them for their interests or calls them shallow she looks like the judgmental, snobbish person.
I feel like the writers loved the Christina Ricci deadpan quips, but didn't realize that insulting characters who didn't deserve it came off as pretentious and mean not "OMG she's sarcastic queen!" I binged it when I was sick in bed, I thought it was okay. You’re 100% right about Wednesday’s character, I found her super annoying and I was so confused on why everyone likes her.
Like Enid, Xavier and Tyler all generally like her for most of the show and it’s like, why tho? Especially Xavier, at the end he even gets her a gift and it’s like, really bruh? I liked the Siren girl, even if her side plot with her mom was kinda pointless.
And yea, her being so confidently wrong about the culprits was really annoying, yet hilarious cause the whole time I was just like “…you’re not a very good detective are you?”

    • @twinshiftyt
      @twinshiftyt 2 роки тому

I think people might like her for 2 reasons. One is that they relate to her more dark and rebellious side. After all it’s a common thing teens go through because they want to express themselves but aren’t sure how and feel like adults are bringing them down. And an other reason why people might like her (we’re I do fit in) is that Wednesday is very autism coated. After all Tim Burton (from what I understand) is autistic and from interviews I read (cus I do that when I find something I’m interested in) Tim Burton often makes characters he writes or direct like him. And it’s easy to see some other characters he’s directed and written that could fit into the autistic spectrum too. And it’s things like not understanding others emotions, social cues, sounding and looking completely bored all the time (tho I never mean it. It is just my default), being socialy awkward, not knowing how to express your own emotions and a tendency to be over fixated on things that make me relate a little to Wednesday even tho I am not that rebellious or sarcastic. It’s a little of a comfort.
Then on why Enid, Xavier and Tyler like her. Well Enid (which I also relate to cus honestly a lot of the “outcasts” can be seen as autistic) seems like the type of person who just is very optimistic, positive and tries to be friends whit everyone, that’s why she’s so frustrated that it doesn’t work whit Wednesday.
And Xavier it’s a more philosophical thing. Obviously he has put Wednesday on a pedestal after saving him and he just doesn’t want to acknowledge the fact she’s kinda a jerk cus he thinks of her so highly.
And whit Tyler it seems kinda implied at the end that he never really liked Wednesday at all and just used her. But we probably won’t know that until like season two.
And yes her falsely accusing people is annoying I do agree but it is not just this series problem but a lot of mystery movies/series dose this and it’s called a red herring which is someone they want the audience think is the culprit cus otherwise the mystery won’t be good. Some can do it pretty gracefully but it can be hard sometimes. But at the same time if they didn’t have the fake outs it wouldn’t be as good if a story and would probably be worse.
(Sorry that this is so long. Like I said when I’m interested in something (or some topic) I go a little overboard… sorry)
      (Edit)
Continuations on what I said cus I found new info, it’s confirmed in interviews whit the actors that Tyler never truly liked Wednesday and hated her and her family for what happened to his mother.

    • @mistermagius0168
      @mistermagius0168 2 роки тому +27

@@twinshiftyt The thing about the Xavier being the red herring was it was WAY too obvious that he was the red herring. Literally in the scene when Wednesday finds out that the Hyde is human, Xavier pops up next to her and I was like “NOPE, it’s not you, it’s probably Tyler” and as the show kept hammering it in it only made me more sure. It didn’t help that Tyler as a character was pretty bland, even his reveal didn’t make him more interesting to me, but idk, maybe others felt differently.
Back to Xavier, I really hope he doesn’t get with Wednesday in season 2. With her constantly ignoring, insulting and only going to him when she needs something, it just doesn’t feel right. The love triangle in general was weird. I figured that Wednesday might be Aro/Ace, would be nice to get some queer rep, especially with some of the themes of the show that could be seen through a queer lens. “Outcasts having a safe place where they can be themselves”, Enid’s mom literally trying to send her to conversion camp. Feels like a missed opportunity.
I wish more writers would actually go for this stuff instead of just having subtext and hints, this goes for all representation.
Damn, kinda went on a tangent there 😅😅
As for Wednesday herself, I get why audience might like and relate to her, I think she’s got some funny lines here and there, but as a whole I didn’t like her character that much.

And far too many people try to excuse this criticism with "but she's a teenager!" When that doesn't even make sense. The whole point of The Addams is that their normal is our oddities―Wednesday wouldn't act like a normal, common teenager. Full of rebellion and attitude.
Sure, in the older versions, I guess you could say she did have a certain rebellion to her. It's what my older brother mentioned as well when I was in a discussion with him about this show. But he made a good point that it was never the typical "I don't wanna be like my mom/fuck my parents" type of rebellion, but more of the "I'm simply doing my own thing" type all the while still remaining respect and subtle idolization for her parents. (He said it in a much better way than I could remember, however).
And don't even get me started on how they characterized Pugsley. I expected Pugsley to grin after being thrown into the locker and take the bullying as an invitation of friendship, or would criticize the bullies on their "craft." But nope. He came out of that locker shaking in his boots and in need of Wednesday's protection.
That last part isn't really related to what you said, but I just started rambling a bit because I can't stand this show. I hate to sound aggressive, I really do, but I grew up on the Addams Family and cherished them for years. My grandfather and I watched the original black and white Addams Family show, then the Family Values movies so many times together, then I eventually lost him. So The Addams became all the more special to me.
But this show? This show felt like a spit in the face. But unlike me, my grandpa would've just laughed at it and found humour in that feeling. (And honestly? I should learn to take his example. It's just tough to).
This show isn't Wednesday, her emotions, dynamic and adventures to me. It's more like a YA novel with the main character being an edgy self-insert OC who's not-so-subtly based on Wednesday Addams. It took all my willpower to make it through the show.

Wednesday could be coming into her powers so she is enrolled in Nevermore and is considered to be a late bloomer making her want to prove herself.

Wednesday's telemetry glimpses don't even matter since she could just ask her brother what happened, every other time she could ask someone around or figured it out based on intuition. The outcasts, even though they're supposed to be, y'know, outcasts have very forgettable characteristics and are kinda generic.
Overall, a big problem I see is the lack of theme, the directors summed up the Addams Family as goth and eccentric but carelessly dropped more important elements like their dynamic and how the people around them are represented, very ungood

And I can tell you that these outcasts really are outcasts and even if it might not be clear traits it’s clear by how people treat them. @growingupwithdisney 2 роки тому +3

@Johnny Rocket very true, even in terms of the fandom, most girls (on Twitter especially) don’t like Xavier, and still root for Tyler despite him being the monster. They see Xavier as pathetic, and use the term “loser” and “weird” when referring to him, and giving Tyler so many excuses. At least he did have some boundaries with her when he was in jail and she was STILL trying to use him, Xavier deserves better. He was also getting manipulated by Bianca in their past relationship, so he really should end up alone. Not in a sad way though like in the dance episode, but in a powerful, independent, and self-respecting way. Most guys in society should learn that, don’t bend over backwards for girls that don’t actually like you, use your critical thinking skills and see that you deserve better.
It reminds me of the show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 1 and 3, the character EJ Caswell was seen as the villain just because he’s a popular jock, but he’s genuinely a much better person than the skater boy main character Ricky Bowen, who tried to home-wreck on EJ’s relationship twice…yet everyone (the fans and people in the show) villainize EJ, as they victimize and excuse Ricky. EJ did all these nice things for his girlfriends, but that’s not enough. The girls find any excuse to break up with him, so they can justify being with Ricky…it’s so biased. EJ had to be single and get character development (that no one noticed). At least Xavier got a sorta good ending in season 1, but it was only after Tyler wasn’t an option anymore. Wednesday should’ve been better than girls in modern society, I have a feeling she’ll still end up with Tyler ultimately. They’ll just excuse his behavior by saying he was manipulated/groomed to act like the Hyde, while Xavier will end up alone

Wednesday in this show is definitely a Mary sue. She barely makes mistakes (aside from jailing Xavier) and she fits the “edgy goth oc” archetype perfectly. She reminds of Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven Way from My Immortal in that sense.
Edit: Also it feels like Wednesday has no common sense. I know suspension of disbelief and all, but why she didn’t she start throwing hands with Tyler (or whatever the Hyde’s name is) in the police station when he confessed and start running away? The execs would know pretty quickly that a new IP couldn’t compete with an established one so they’d paint it over with an even more popular IP and add as many famous names to the cast as they could. If Wednesday is transferred to a school...I wish Pugsley is also transferred with her despite of their grade level so that they can have a sibling companionship just like in the previous Addams Family media.
Like if Pugsley is getting bullied and Wednesday saves him from a toxic environment, they know exactly that the school they were attending is a toxic environment so their parents have an idea to transfer both of them to let them thrive in a safer system.
Its just Morticia and Gomez needs to do more justice in character with being more supportive and Wednesday admires her parents for being supportive and being whole as a family.
Instead of Wednesday's issues, it is just her trying to protect her brother. I just hate Wednesday being mean to everyone like it is out of of character. Sure she is sassy but not going to extremes.

With literally no dialog, just dancing and music, I was like "This is a very weird take on the Addams Family. I might skip this one." Glad to see I made the right choice! I will 100% support your tinfoil theory of "it wasn't actually an Addams family property to start with" because, as you pointed out, it wouldn't be the first time the industry went "we have to get our own out, before all the market share is scooped up!" Also, it's funny that Wednesday is super good at super everything she does, except when the audience sees her do it. Like, yeah, she knows all this information, and she's a super talented fencer, but then she can't figure out the murdered despite being incredibly intelligent, and she can't dodge a statue despite flying around as a master of wire-fu? It all seems very tonally inconsistent. Great review, can't wait for the next video ^.^

You never mentioned the Adult Wednesday Addams youtube series by Melissa Hunter. She was forced to stop and wipe her content (it's been re-uploaded by others), but I assumed it inspired this show. I didn't know about Monster High, but I've been aware of the rivalry thing ever since Michael and City of Angels came out so close together, so that makes sense. Throughout this video I found myself frequently imagining a show where Wednesday Addams, macabre nerd, goes to a normal high school and befriends several people with interests as off-beat as her own. Like, a Sengoku Jidai history nerd, and a Bionicle nerd or Gundam Model nerd, and a Tolkien nerd, and a marine life documentary nerd, etc. And then maybe they have to combine their separate brands of weird and specific trivia knowledge to overcome some challenge, like an actual interesting mystery, or a trivia contest whose prize money will let them keep their school club or something. Seems more interesting than just another monster school thing.
Of course, the downside of something like that being attempted is how easily it's character writing would fall into stereotypical doldrums if the writing staff didn't have people with those actual interests involved. And even then the Addams Family stuff would probably still feel tacked-on. God forbid she ends up as unlikeable as she did in the show we actually got.

What did annoy me was how the show tried to push this romance subplot with characters that had no chemistry, especially Tyler. The fact that Wednesday was very clear in her intentions of using him for a car and only ever talked about her investigation, I found it incredibly stupid that there could be any romance whatsoever. (Also the fact that this Wednesday gave me big aroace vibes, but as far as I know that is purely headcanon)

I liked the show because it was actually watchable, fun, and unique unlike like all the Riverdale clones that are popping up.
I 100% agree Wednesday was out of character. I didn't mind her being a brat because the show was her learning how to be around other people and make friends, but I COULD NOT STAND her strangely drawing the line at murder. Like, her looking at the Hyde and the one teacher lady and being like: you are bad and I am the good guy.
No. She would hate the Hyde because "huff, you don't even murder because you like it. How boring." And the teacher lady " you know, the whole nice teacher schtick never suited you. Where I respect your desire to destroy our interests collide so I will have to stop you." And Mr fire and brimstone preacher would be " I like your style, but as you murdered my ancestor I now have personal stakes in this so now you must die "
They could have added logic that kept in line with her character. Wednesday doesn't have to be a hero. But they wanted to make her one, and her happily taking that place isn't like her. Wednesday would want to be right, she would want to win the game
She would not bother to save the day, however.
Also, the monster design of the Hyde was awful. So, so bad.

While almost all of the people playing the Addams family are at least passible. I still have a problem with the actor playing Gomez. He may look the part of the early Gomez. But he just seems way too reserved and lacks the energy Gomez has. The guy that is affectionate to his family one minute. Then wants to backflip onto a table and fence with someone the next just for the hell of it.
Definitely have to agree, this day in age there would be a huge line of people wanting to date Wednesday, she’d be beating them off with a stick.
Also feel the makers missed the point of the Addams family, having the gothic and creepy family be a drastic contrast to the normal happy go lucky American family. Having her in with another gothic discount monster high setting doesn’t leave much to contrast and as such she doesn’t stand out as much as she should. Then just having slapping on another, boarding school mystery that’s been done before. Doesn’t add much.
They could have done far more to make Wednesday likable while having her dry wit and Macabre nature. Instead of just making her insufferably unlikable.

They could have even been professors of “human integration”, but most of their understanding or “normies” are comically incorrect. They’re genuinely interested in understanding and getting along with normies, even if they still can’t quite understand them despite their “expertise” after living amongst them for many years, which could even be uncommon for most outcasts.
Then we would have more of the family together, as they should be, and they could still be the quirky close knit family that sticks out even among the other outcasts, while still being respected.

More like she resents her mother because deep down she knows they have a lot in common and she's determined to be her own person, not a reflection of her mother. That's why she sneers at her mother and then indulges in the same things she enjoys. She has immense respect for her father, and even stated that he was "twice the man" when speaking to one of the villains. Wednesday is definitely going through her angst phase, exacerbated by her macabre persona, but that's not hate for her parents, it's just good ole teenage resentment.

I have two issues with Wednesday (the show): Wednesday (the character) has no weakness outside of not having all the information yet, and Gomez and Morticia don't act in love.
Wednesday as a character would have been so much more interesting if she was only good at mental things like inventing, psychology, sleuthing, scaring people, etc., while being terrible at physical things like running, combat, and feats of strength. In this one change, her verbal bouts and intimidation become preventative cover for her inability to hold her own in a fight. Her constant need to rely on others without getting close to them is because she really can't do some things, so she needs to rely on someone like Enid to use her werewolf strength (and she also wants to trust people and have friends she just refuses to let herself be vulnerable). It would also be a subversion of the typical tomboy-ish junior detective protagonist and follows established canon of Wednesday preferring to destroy her enemies with a carefully laid plan, rather than a direct confrontation. This is probably the first time we've seen Wednesday throw a punch. If you need her to be in a fight, it should be her using the environment to outwit her opponents, rather than "I learned Kung-Fu from my uncle").
Every time Gomez and Morticia are on screen, it seems like they're keeping an unnatural distance from each other. Every expression of love felt like it was waiting for someone to yell "action", and Gomez in particular seemed to be rather lacking in passion. He looked at Morticia like she was his on-screen wife, not like she was his divine inspiration, his very heart, his reason to live, do die, and to kill! Young Gomez was good, but something about modern Gomez just made me feel uncomfortable.
(also, I agree it's weird that they claim Wednesday is "black and white", drop the pale makeup halfway through, and also mention she is both of Native and Mexican heritage. And Ajax is an actual Greek name, it probably would have been weird to be a gorgon called Perseus or something.)

I remmeber one of the Adams Family movies having Wednesday and her brother were sent to summer camp.
That movie was a much better portrayal of the Adams and Wednesday than this one could ever hope to be.

People are starting to forget what good films and tv shows consist of… the amount of cringe in the first episode was too much for me.
