- Strong-running, very straight, 1977 Yamaha XS650 with a little rust.
Has 1975 tins. Otherwise completely original and unmolested. 150 PSI on both cylinders. No smoke, no leaks, no seeps. Starts easily and idles smoothly. Someone took very good care of this bike. Zero evidence of ever having been on its side.
What a wonderful exhaust sound!
I remember, I had this same year model 650 Yamaha over 20 years ago. These bikes could top 60 MPG if kept within 55-60 MPH. Yes, it was fun to hear the exhaust sound again. My brother had a 1971 Norton 750 Commando which had wonderful sounding stereo exhaust. Fun memories of younger years.
My god that bike sounds amazing
indeed
My first bike was a 1976. Miss it. On a safety note, I had to look away when you took a bike with unknown mechanics on a 5th gear test run with no pants or helmet. I always expect the worst.
I bought a brand new one in '78. I wish I still had it now. Great bike!
Exhaust sound is amazing 👌👌
Nice to see an unbubba'd example.
My favourite yamaha after RD🔥🔥🔥🔥
This convinced me to hang on to both my 77s. Havent ridden em in years but both safe and dry in my garage. Gotta wake em up soon!
XS650.com has a lot of good tech info and a Forum with helpful members. Good luck with them.
A lot of cleaning/painting to do, but certainly worth it. Mine is impatiently waiting for that as well :)
I used to have this same year model bike. It was fun to ride, but the seating comfort was never favorable for trips longer than 50 miles. Sold it for what I paid for it over 20 years ago. Forced insurance laws was the final straw because I was only riding it around 400 miles yearly. If I lived somewhere where riding motorcycles was safer and the scenery was nice, I could see having one of these bikes again, perhaps. Besides the marginal seating quality, the other weak areas on these bikes is the front break and the need to replace the outer generator brush every 5-6K miles. I also had 2 Honda 450 twins prior which were not as good as the 650 on an over-all curve. Honda 450's required a lot more upkeep to keep them viable.
looks and sounds awesome,I like it
Thank you! It was a good find.
Nice classic look. Worth looking after
Nice vid and very good perspective. Thank you for sharing . Like many who had one back in the day (a 650 B ) there would come a time when I d get back into biking, and of all the bikes owned and loved in the past , my favourite is the XS650. So, like you, I went for a mid to late 70's model with the strengthened frame (another 'B' in fact) which isn't as rusty as yours , and unlike my young one one in the early 80;'s and the bike in your video, the silencers are unholed..amazingly! Interestingly, I also found a nice 73 model, which I expected not to handle so well due to the flimsier frame, but that too is surprisingly well mannered on tired British lanes. Bonnies are great, but the engines and electrics of the XS make it a worthy alternative - much cheaper too..
Thanks a lot for the nice words. You should join the XS650.com Forum. It is very active and interesting and helpful, with a lot of good people like you and me. Show your bikes off there!
@@handspiral Thank you for the heads up on the forum ! I will certainly do so. Having done some research recently on the development of the XS650, it was surprising to learn that the model was effectively the saviour of the company when the TX500 and 750 proved so disastrous, and that without ever going overboard on advertising the fact, over 500,000 units were sold worldwide. So one can understand why this groundswell of support for the characterful bike should be strong, and the forum sounds it might be really good. I hope you still have the engine off that bike, it sounded real strong !
This guy sounds like trump😂😂
I think same!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A bit late to the party but been reminiscing lately. I see this one doesn’t have the front brake optional extra 😄. You didn’t mention that 😉
Nice bike I've seen this video somewhere else
Sounds great !!
💥 Completely Unmolested But Rusted Completely As Well💥
Same year model that I used to have. Shameful that the bike was left out to rust. Sounds good, but needs a lot of work to look like it should.
Beautiful old bike.
Someone took really good care of it, it’s really rusty. lmao
Yeah, that was dumb. Unrehearsed narrative.
It’s 40 years old... lol
I guess I got lucky. I love my xs, not a speck of rust and just a pleasure to ride
U not jokeing
That thing needs some steal wool
What a beauty
Sounds lovely
Imagine the sound with two Conti exhaust pipes or Dunstall ones freed from their Interior...
Is that a stock exhaust?
Certainly looked better when it was moving ......did i mention the Rust...lol In all seriousness though , be hard to find a better cheap bike to restore . Dave NZ
If you repaint the frame and swing arm you should replace the swing arm bushings and upgrade to bronze bushings and new grease zerts. It will improve handling
Agree!
It sounds fantastic.
Thanks! It was a fun little resurrection.
I may be rough but no worse that the 1983 I rescued out of a shed on some back road farm about 20 years ago. I need to do a little more work to the starter gear spring. But If I need to go someplace I know it will start and run. Sat all winter out in unheated barn and a couple weeks ago gave it a few kicks and it was running.
Nice! Nothing beats resurrecting an old XS650 that you rescued from the dead and didn't pay much for. You gotta wonder why a bike with a perfectly good motor was just parked for 20 or 40 years... I wonder how many more are sitting in barns covered with dust.
Sounds nice, would have been a nice project bike.
The mufflers have rusted-through holes, but it does still sound nice. Would have been a good cosmetic project for someone else, but I already have a nice 1976 XS650 and only wanted the motor.
Molested by rust !
How much did this bike purchase or sell for in this condition if you don’t mind me asking
We’re gonna have lots of soda blasting and evaporust, it’s gonna be tremendous and we’re gonna make the rust pay for it.
The 180 degree vertical twins had a farty sound, but I still want one. How much are you asking?
that has a 360 degree crank
William, your vocal similarity to Trump must allow you to make the best prank calls EVER...! “Hello Police? Don here, my bike needs polishing!” (or similar)
I have the exact bike except mine is a 1975 , did you have to do any carb work to get it to run?
IMHO these carbs are great when properly cleaned, but very complicated to re-build. I suggest that you join the xs650.com Forum. There is a Carb Guide there, and the members will answer your questions.
I have already rebuilt them, all is good..........
I have a 71 number matching working on restoring I love these bikes there amazing machines
The life forced its tribute, but the technique is very good. Especially the Toyota designed engine is fabuless built! But at 30-40 000km the crankshaft bearings give up live.
I was of the understanding that these bikes would last 100K miles. Hard to believe these bikes would last as long as a BMW 650 or 750 given how the cylinders are fully exposed to the flow of air on BMW's. I think that BMW's were also more mildly tuned than the Yamaha 650's.
IMHO it's criminal to leave a fine motorcycle parked outside long enough to manifest the extreme corrosion this bike shows. Sad. Anyone who thinks so little of their machine that they let this happen to it shouldn't bother owning it.
cane and taser them.... roll on!
It’s perfect to restore though!
A 'little' rust???? It needs a complete dismantle and a refurb. The pipes are knackered.
Don't chop it! I restored my '75 a year ago and old guys see it and always seem to have a story about an XS650 they had back in the day.
Agree....dont chop it
All I can say is ,I had a 81 a XS650SE with alloy wheels ,it rusted though the exhaust in little over a year,, so the quality went down some!!! I made it twin disc with the help of a XS110 left caliper ,did not make much difference!!!
you probably used the stock master cylinder. You needed a larger bore one, because you werent providing any more hydraulic force.
Zajebisty
About $6-700 would be fair. And $700 is pushing it. It’s not a Kz. Lol. But it sounds great!!
Thanks on the sound, yeah, it's a good-running motor.
$700? You could sell it $ 7000 in my country
700???? Where do you live?? That clears 2 grand easy in Australia even in that condition.
Looks like my 75. Little Blackie.
I’m restoring a 76, almost there
Yamaha motorcycles 👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍👍
Simechrome and a buffing wheel for the cases.
$500?
Give ya one dollar.
Is it for sale?
Sorry, no, long gone. The video is from November, 2017.
@@handspiral where is this bike now
Sorry Brother, you had better either check the vin to title, OR someone has changed paint and decals because that is, A "1975 XS2b" with Star Black. paint I own one. every year from 1970-75 only came in 1 color per year, late 70's -EOP 80's gave paint color options..
I explain that the bike is a 1977 with 1975 tins in the written description that accompanies the video.
I also say as much in the video.
@@handspiral Sorry dude, I didn't read past the title. The only XS I like better than the 75, is the TX 650, the decals, that wonderful Sapphire blue metallic color with the metal decals countersunk in the side covers. Too bad most had flashers ripped off and std forks exchanged for the 6" over front tubes. Great bikes, can kick myself for selling my gold 71!! but low end it was a real dog riding with 2 was about impossible even with smaller riders.
@@larrybeach7149 I wonder if maybe you had a carb issue with your 71. The 70-73 256 engines are actually prized by flat-trackers over the later 447 engines because they have a hotter cam and a more aggressive stroke.
Yeah, the blue 1973s are pretty. IMHO, the best-looking of all is 1970, and then every year got progressively uglier, in perfect sequence. I'm currently restoring a 1971 Candy Orange.
what is your point ????
I sold the frame on Craigslist. The video was part of the ad. The point was that the frame was straight, never dropped, and the vid proves it. What is your point ????
State that's in it would make a good chop.
2:37 your welcome
Corrosion counts.
Only "Molested" from someone leaving outside to rust away! Gonna take a lot of time any $$$'s to bring it back to a presentable condition!!! Whomever owned this was an idiot to have let it get in this condition. Should be drawn & quartered!
Yeah, it's weird that someone would let a bike with a perfectly good motor just sit -- although I did spend a couple of days refreshing that motor before I ran it.
Did someone drop that in a lake??? LOL
Cheesey salesman!
you sound like trump
You think? That would suck.
lol. trump rides.
voice od Donald Trump - cool ☺
Cheaper than a Triumph...
Yeah, and it has a comprehensible electrical system...
