Mit Schaudern und Tränen, höre ich diese Interpretation, nur diese und sonst keine andere von den meisten ausdruckslosen Aufnahmen, was es gibt! ¡Gracias Maestro Gardiner, coro, orquesta y solistas!
Bach is the greatest composer of all times - there is no doubt about it. Gardiner is a good conductor, but the greatest merit of his very beautiful performances belongs to the mastery of his players and singers. He has no exceptional merit in it.
@@VernonVince Yes, but he, although isn't more important than the players and singers, is the responsible for the music and text analysis, and the main responsible for the interpretation.
I've noticed in the last few years the majority of people I ask who their favourite composer is, they reply Bach. Before you'd get more Mozart or Beethoven. But for me, Bach is the greatest by some distance. I've heard people say he's proof that God exists!

The Christmas Oratorio is the nourishment to the soul to feed faith, optimism, energy and hope for a good NEW YEAR. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND CHEERS FOR A GOOD 2020!
I frequently listen to Bach's Oratorio, it revitalises hopes and internal peace, yet, the year 2020 has become globally, a living hell, due to COVID-19. The old saying is worth to print out here, hope dies with Man. Let us not give up, unite and follow the strict advice from WHO and the CDC.
I dislike it that, whenever there's a grand piece of music being played, there's so much criticism and comparison with other famous artist, or the Grand Masters. Bach is not Mozart or Beethoven or anyone else. This should not be compared. Each is his own great God given talent. Shortshightedness and short of hearing is the culprit. Let's all appreciate what we hear, it is beyond beauty.
junglemonkey my favourite quote is from some well- known music pundit (unfortunately I don’t remember who it was). He said „Bach composed for God. Mozart for the world. And Beethoven for freedom.“ I think there’s some truth in it
One of my very favorite UA-cam videos. I watch it every year just before Christmas. Both parts. It nourishes my soul, moves me deeply, and I feel gratitude towards every person in this video, and all the people behind the scenes who worked so hard to make it. Oh, and to that J.S. guy. He had a hand in it also, after all. OK, now on to part 2.
I agree! I used to listen to in in my home town of Hamburg in the main church, St. Michaelis, and this makes me feel at home again. I start listening in November and can't stop until January.
Felt like listening to this on Christmas Eve 2017. This is the closest I get to the Christian traditions I grew up having. (Though now I'm agnostic/atheist--can't really trust organized religion anymore.) I've returned to my childhood home, joined by parents and siblings, just enjoying a peaceful and nice Christmas. And now I top this off with Bach's great Weihnachtsoratorium! Happy holidays everyone!
I can't really say whether God is real or not but priests are certainly not the barometer. The fact that God isn't with any current church shouldn't convince you he's nowhere to be found.
I agree with all those who praise Bernarda Fink. But I also am fond of Dietrich Hebschel's strong voice. And he sang from memory, thus with great excessive freedom.
Charmed by, particularly, the German pronunciation and the thorough attention given the conductor by the singers (for some of them, the music folders are just for show). The brisk pace brings a liveliness to the music. All the musicians seem totally in control of their material. The cameras work themselves deeply into the players. We get many fine details: Fingerwork, facial expressions, light gleaming on the instruments. A very pleasing experience watching this video. Thank you!
Yes, and the reason for it: The German language is a very beautiful one. May be you never heard that or considered it to be so. By the way, even your name is a German one. We have a town named Stromberg in the Southern parts of our country.😊😃
As to the German language it is certainly a must to all singers of The Lieder by Schubert and Mahler and others and almost impossible to master by Anglo/Americans, except Thomas Hampson trained by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. The unique aria g flat by Pamina in the Magic Flute, why did Mozart compose it so difficult in German that rarely the best of best German singers can master it while the Italian version does not have these language problems. Anyhow as Hampson once remarked the best language for singing is the Russian language because it reflects wonderfully the emotions. Listen to late Dmitri Hvorostovsky: „the cranes“.
