Very interesting to see how stuff works over in different countries! In Germany things are handled slightly different. Most trash is put into different bins (paper, plastics, black) although some areas use bags instead of bins for plastics. They usually have standing passenger positions on the back of the truck. So one person rides standing at the back and another person drives. They stop at a bin, the person on the back puts the bin on the lift arm, empties it, and puts the empty bin back to the side of the road. Then they continue to the next bin. So they mostly only walk truck to bin and back distances. When there's a lot of bins at some place the driver gets out to help. Oh and in Germany the residents of houses further away from the road still have to bring their bins up to the road. So garbage collectors in Germany don't have to stray away from the road like shown in 1:09:43. I personally hate the plastics bags (my home area uses them) because they rip often and then you have to get a new one and re-bag it. Also birds like to peck on them when they are standing roadside. These bags then make a big mess as soon as the rubbish collector tries to pick them up. I grew up in a densely populated district of Berlin as a kid and there they collect bins from the inner courtyards. So the refuse collectors had a huge keyring with keys for all the front doors in their area. Some houses also have a special door opener buttons that are activated on collection days. Oh and in Berlin they have quite a few more different kinds of bins depending on the district of course. These are all I've seen before: paper, plastics, black, bio-degradable, white glass, brown glass, green glass, electronics, large trash

These are sacks of plastics. To fill up each bin and tip it would waste lots of time due to the volume they would take up in the bin. We do ask residents crush their bottles and containers down but many don't and put them in the sacks at full retail size Pile on a corner awaiting my arrival and we spend a short time throwing it in
Hi there I was looking at doing this job because I am sick of nights out where I am what is a normal day for u start and finish time etc would be good to hear because I am very interested
Long time ago now, 0630-1630 "job and finish". Last bin on, tip off and go home. Diesel up, park up, work pack folder & phone handed in. Teamwork is crucial, can be brilliant fun or very frustrating if the chemistry & camaraderie isn't there. You are reliant on each other. Safety is utterly paramount. No bin, motorist, office phone call, customer moan or difficult junction worth risking each other's welfare and safety. Pretty straightforward, cruise about, stop, roll forward, stop. LOTS of reversing in busy housing areas, expect stupidity, and you won't be disappointed. Oh! Everyone else's journey is more important than yours, so prepare for some abysmal driving. It isn't as if we aren't picking up YOUR waste. Best of luck sir
Looks like Chelmsford Council are light years ahead of many councils out there, and they're giving the residents all the tools to recycle as much as possible, with no extra charge to their council tax, so is such a shame so many people can't be arsed when it takes little to no effort. They should think themselves lucky, where I live in Lincolnshire, our local council (South Kesteven District Council) you get your standard fortnightly collection of general waste and recycling, and if you want garden waste collection, you pay extra on your council tax for it and extra for anymore bins you want. Food caddies were a trial in very small areas in 2021 now that has been scrapped. No paper or tins/glass collection. Shows the difference and effort different councils across the country are willing to put into separation waste as much as we can
Waste is a problem that isn't going to go away. If the UK is to be carbon neutral by 2050 a enormous effort needs to be put into waste management initiatives nationwide.
@@wheelerd02 I couldn't agree more mate, the time is now, not in 20 years time. Obviously every council operates in their own ways but some are certainly making a superior effort to manage waste effectively and do their upmost to help us protect the planet and reduce the amount going into landfill.
I use old man as term of endearment as I feel it confers respect in that they are of experience and are wise with the passage of years. Age is nothing to be ashamed of and is but a number, each passing year should be held as a something to be proud of and not wasted To use young man would be patronising and overly familiar. Just my opinion
Great stuff to watch ma man. Im a bin lorry driver myself too. Mainly trade waste collections in Edinburgh area. What camera do you use to record your videos?
I’ve just passed my class 2 hgv, I joined an agency that takes new drivers and they offered me this type of job, Bin lorry driver, do you think it’s good for a new driver or will I struggle? It looks hard
Congratulations on your pass It is straight forward enough, just prepare for lots of reversing. We have had people here that are recent passes and also those driving for years. Some last, others don't Curtain side/pallet work will teach you more about haulage and logistics whereas I _feel_ driving a bin lorry will teach you more about vehicle handling and where to place it to get into destinations General haulage, as well as being christ awful, sees you driving up and down dual carriageways. Anyone can drive a motor between 2 lines for miles on end. •If in doubt, GOAL Get Out And Look •Take your time, don't be pressured into situations. •Safety is #1 priority, your crew rely on you to keep them safe whilst working. •Bring lunch, bring x3 spare tacho rolls, CPC card at all times, sunglasses, pens and gloves. Tell us how you get on either way
@@wheelerd02 thanks for the reply, what do you mean taco roll? Do I not put my taco digi card into the hgv slot or do I log everything on paper instead
@@mohammedqasim3657 tacho card goes in the machine If VOSA or Police pull you over they may want you to do a print off of driver card or vehicle data. This uses a lot of paper, you are _required_ by law to have spare rolls with you. Whether it is your vehicle or not is not a concern of theirs, you _must_ have spare rolls. I.e, you print off, it runs out, you have 1 replacement. You now have no spares to replace *that* with. You need a replacement of the replacement of the replacement. Nonsense I know
You ain't kidding, we operate 2 different width motors depending on what rounds they're allocated to. I believe recycling is slightly wider than general waste, I could be wrong
Safety is paramount at all times, no bin is worth injury. Where possible/required reverse into your destinations, if you cannot fit in you'll at least have an exit. Do not be pressured into taking the vehicle into places you don't think it will fit. You are the driver, you are in control, it is your responsibility and thus, your problem. Bring a packed lunch as you never know where break is going to happen. Decent sunglasses, phone charger, pens, clipboard, hand sanitizer, tacho rolls, and although grim; a toilet roll with a bin bag stuffed inside. You never know. If in doubt GOAL! Get Out And Look Just ignore residents if they start moaning or talking to you, don't get paid enough to do customer call centre chat as well as drive/load. The consequences of ignoring is less than if you get into an argument. Any issue getting out of control, get the loaders back in the vehicle and drive away. If it is domestic round driving then Domestic/UK tacho rules apply. Break before 6 hours work or 4 1/2 hours driving. On our tachos you don't do 4 hours driving in a full day due to the stop start nature of the work. Take whatever breaks you require, ignore loaders requests for short breaks so they can go home early. If crew reporting sheets are a thing, write down anything out of the ordinary, side waste, double bins, refills, registrations of dodgy driving etc. Better to waste a few seconds covering yourself than to waste 30+ minutes driving back for a bin that someone didn't bother to out out. Finally, they are only BINS. It doesn't matter, it means nothing. Many before us and many people after us will be picking it up. Waste will be never ending and people's bins will never be "big enough". Take your time, drive safely and enjoy! 👍
Lol why no meat etc? Where I'm at tho we got FOGO and you can put most things even pet waste etc in it to. I went oh fudge when u tipped the paper in with plastic 😂😂😂
Polystyrene goes into household waste/black bins I would rather it was bagged up next to the bin than rammed in and difficult to remove Haven't encountered dead animals yet Plenty of "waste" however 🤢

It happens, I admit my mistakes. I mentioned myself in one of the videos as it happens, distracted and get it mixed up. However, given my time on the bins, this would be a very small drop in the ocean of local waste collection. All manner of contaminated recycling and non household waste getting carted away.
@@wheelerd02 Well is is 2022, and with a high cost of living it has to be reasonable, they're not slaves after all. Would they take home over 600 a week?
@@wheelerd02 You'd be better off working actually in a recycling bring all, where you could get all the goodies people throw away and make more money selling those goodies as a bonus.
I am a trade waste refuse collector and have done domestic collections to love the videos pal but driving in your work gloves isnt the best idea as you leave crap all over steering wheel
Hello and thank you I know about the gloves, someone else has already brought it up. However I always drive with gloves on then my hands _should_ be cleaner rather than forgetting and cross contaminating bare hands. Plenty of sanitizer gets used each day prior to eating. Many people don't even work with gloves at all which I find concerning.
You driving without the bin being on the clamp? It’s only sitting on the bin lift, any bounce and there’s the potential for that bin to fall off hit a vehicle or member of the public. Then your driving with your gloves on and touching the steering wheel then door handles and gearbox and then driving without them on and touching the same things. Could been animal pee human pee or spit on those bags not very hygienic. Driving with gloves on is my pet hate
Short journey street to street it is raised partially so the upper rail of the bin lift forms a slight barrier, you'd have to take the truck of a ramp for a bin to fall off. They do not come off accidently, only if lowered or lifted off by hand Longer journeys the bins get tipped fully up into the hopper so they are clamped and held upside down I used hand sanitizer throughout the day, on gloved hands and without. The vehicles have surface spray sanitizer for the clean conscious. Bin work and general waste industry isn't famed for it's clean work and sanitary conditions.
A lot of respect for the graft you boys do and professionalism you have with your job, keep it up 👌🏻

Tins into an MRF (Material Recovery Facility) in our yard that seperates into piles and it gets crushed into cubes for sale.
Glass also gets tipped in the yard into a huge pile that gets trucked away onto melting down and starting again
Also quick do you guys own the bins the wheelie ones cause in my area Barking We’ve got separate bins the grey ones and brown and green for Garden brown recycling
Chelmsford Cuty Council "owns" the bins, householders are custodians
I heard about the council had to cancel food collections for 3 weeks because of no staff
That did indeed happen, even now we are still short staffed

Great video but here's a Tip after picking up all that rubbish with them gloves take them off before entering cab
True, cab controls and messy waste should be kept seperate
However, if I do all operations with the gloves on, then when I have lunch I know my hands will be _cleaner_, not to say perfectly clean
In other jobs, yes I have distinctly kept gloves off in the cab
We have hand washing stations on the N/S under the body, hand sanitizer I keep it my pocket at all times and also there are anti bacterial sprays kept in the vehicle
A great video how long have you been on the bins, do you enjoy it and how heavy was it for you guys at Christmas, we were doing a least 3 loads of refuse and two or three on recycling
Thank you, I have been here 3 years now
Enjoyment ebbs and flows, I have tried other jobs throughout my tenure but return
Christmas was predictably heavy, although not exceedingly. May be an extra 1/2 or 3/4 load on any given day
Nice I have been at the council I work for since I was 14 came for a week work experience and now 28 love the job and I have done all the jobs in the yard and now full time grounds maintenance, I treated myself to my class 2 and love getting to have a bit of a drive
What’s with all the rubbish left on the paths, then hooked to a bin and emptied?
Usually hook a households bin onto the lorry and tip is the system
These are sacks of plastics. To fill up each bin and tip it would waste lots of time due to the volume they would take up in the bin.
We do ask residents crush their bottles and containers down but many don't and put them in the sacks at full retail size
Pile on a corner awaiting my arrival and we spend a short time throwing it in
I’m my area we have 3 storage box like bins for each recycling items and then a small food waste bin. Seems more logical than bagging recycling 😂.
I just collect it, I agree it could be more streamlined
I’m convinced you’re the comedian Russell Kane!.. Is it you??
Not the first to make that comparison
One tip never call an old man an old man. Always pay your respect and say young man :)
I use old man as term of endearment as I feel it confers respect in that they are of experience and are wise with the passage of years.
Age is nothing to be ashamed of and is but a number, each passing year should be held as a something to be proud of and not wasted
To use young man would be patronising and overly familiar.
Just my opinion

Congratulations on your pass
It is straight forward enough, just prepare for lots of reversing. We have had people here that are recent passes and also those driving for years. Some last, others don't
Curtain side/pallet work will teach you more about haulage and logistics whereas I _feel_ driving a bin lorry will teach you more about vehicle handling and where to place it to get into destinations
General haulage, as well as being christ awful, sees you driving up and down dual carriageways. Anyone can drive a motor between 2 lines for miles on end.

@@wheelerd02 thanks for the reply, what do you mean taco roll? Do I not put my taco digi card into the hgv slot or do I log everything on paper instead
@@mohammedqasim3657 tacho card goes in the machine
If VOSA or Police pull you over they may want you to do a print off of driver card or vehicle data.

No, I have to get out and help loading. If the engine goes off then bins won't go up and the hopper won't compact so you have to leave it running
The size of that wagon just looks way too big to fit down some of those roads, don't know how you do it.

Hi, been offered a job doing this, any advice very much appreciated.
Steve.
Get
Out
And
Look
Just ignore residents if they start moaning or talking to you, don't get paid enough to do customer call centre chat as well as drive/load.
Thanks for the advice.

Yes
Any rigid vehicle >7500kg
You have put the paper and the plastic in the wrong place.
It happens, I admit my mistakes. I mentioned myself in one of the videos as it happens, distracted and get it mixed up.
However, given my time on the bins, this would be a very small drop in the ocean of local waste collection. All manner of contaminated recycling and non household waste getting carted away.

I know about the gloves, someone else has already brought it up. However I always drive with gloves on then my hands _should_ be cleaner rather than forgetting and cross contaminating bare hands. Plenty of sanitizer gets used each day prior to eating.

webmicrosites.hays.co.uk/web/chelmsford-city-council/latest-jobs/-/job-details/JOB_1993623
How much money you make son?
Some but not as much as should be given the effort and hazards involved
They do not come off accidently, only if lowered or lifted off by hand
Longer journeys the bins get tipped fully up into the hopper so they are clamped and held upside down
I used hand sanitizer throughout the day, on gloved hands and without. The vehicles have surface spray sanitizer for the clean conscious.
Bin work and general waste industry isn't famed for it's clean work and sanitary conditions.
Never drive with gloves on.
Why not? It's a bin lorry.
Argument being you would be putting germs/mess on the controls, not everyone wears gloves.
Could mean contamination of food and drink
