converts are the ultimate legitimizers when it comes to religion...think about it...this means that someone found your ideas in their adult life, and consciously chose to believe and follow them instead of being brainwashed from birth. they are probably the truest followers of ANY faith they convert to.
Delusion is delusion, regardless of the level. You don't become religious through ANYTHING except brainwashing.
I agree completely. But from the religious persons perspective, a convert could be viewed as a great marketing tool. Judaism just doesn't market to non-jews.

No matter what your race or religion, no matter how open-minded you claim to be, the ultimate test is how you react when your daughter brings home someone that isn't in your group. I think that's universal.

I mean... We can pretend like what that other group is doesn't matter, but we all know it does. As a Northern European, if my daughter came home with a Jew or an Eastern Asian, I wouldn't mind one bit. If she came home with certain other ethnicities/races, I would mind a lot. Not being that way isn't a sign of character. It's a sign of not caring about your kids.

I dont think its wierd, im from chechnya and we also most likely Marry a chechen. Even if we are strongly beliviers in islam we still prefer a chechen. For me it dosent matter as long there is Good personally conection but i do unterstand why specielly small nations marry their own. Marrige it chechenya is much more then just love with 2 people its about ur familys baounding and that means ur wifes family become urs aswell. So u prefer a chechen because u know what to expect and give.

But not wanting Marry converts dosent necassary has to mean that they donts see them as equal jew just probably are more comfortable with same traditions and culture. If some ethnic jew adopted a child and dont think anyone would see that child as convert.

He usually prayed at night (Tahajjud) and fasted during the day, sometimes there is no food even after the time to break fast. How could a Man have sexual relationship frequently if he is hungry? He is also busy about other things in the community since he is a caring Leader. not to mention he has a mission by God Almighty Himself. He didn't desire anything in this short worldly life. He worried about the afterlife of his ummah(Nation) more.

It's funny. Judaism actually teaches that a convert has a much higher soul than a born Jew, because he/she had the power to come back.

they came back to Judaism, same as people that are born Jewish but didn't grow up religious. they have to change their entire way of life to keep the Torah, while people that are born into it have it easier because it's all they know

They believe that even a person who looks at a woman who is not the woman with whom he married and thinks she is attractive is a sin and that is why on Yom Kippur Jews do not eat and drink and then they immerse themselves naked in the sea or in the pool and pray to remove all sins!
They are a bunch of hypocrites. They are the worst. The ones that say to everyone "dont use any machine during shabbat" but let their tv turned on so they can watch it without "using it".
They even have special elevator in Israel, that you get into during shabbat, they lift you at each floor so you dont have to press the button. 😐

Like if you swore to G-d to do something which you couldn't fulfill, if you didn't annul the vow, you'd be liable for the sin of breaking a vow. Like, for example, if you said, "G-d, if you help me get this good job, I promise to give 10% of my income to charity" and then you get the job but you don't donate to charity, you've sinned. You're still obligated to honour contracts. The Gemara is absolutely stuffed full of law on honouring contracts and being ethical in business, which I can say because I have actually read parts of it, whereas I suspect you've never even seen one.
And everybody sins. And nobody immerses on Yom Kippur, because we're forbidden to bathe or even wash our hands ritually except up to the second knuckle. (Yes, we still wash our hands after going to the bathroom. That's something else.)
Ironically, I am a conversion candidate, which is why I know all this stuff cold. It's in the job description.

I think the guy at 6:10 was trying to say that the community feels two converts are more compatible for each other due to a shared experience, and therefore make a better couple.
Agreed. I am not Jewish, neither born nor convert, and it seemed pretty clear to me what he was saying. After all, even if you consider a convert to be 100% Jewish, that’s not the only important part of making a marriage match. There are a lot of other factors that go into finding a compatible spouse, than just being part of the same religious group.

Conversion to Judaism is a long and difficult process that pushes the converts to the limits of their dedication, therefore it is safe to say that most converts are real Jews with a deeper appreciation for the religion.
I don’t think the question was a good one since the Torah specifically praise the converts and Moses married one.
You have a good point, but I think it was a good question to broach the topic. The follow-up questions addressed personal feelings more directly and showed a larger variety of opinions.
I saw someone become a Jew, it took about 30 seconds, he was asked by a fellow Jew if he truly wants to be a Jew, he said yes and he was pronounced Jew on the spot.

He called himself god, and he persuaded people that he was the messiah when clearly he was not as we are not living in the age of utopia as a redeemed people. According to Christians he fulfilled some but not all the prophecies, hence the supposed “second-coming”. The REAL messiah is to come, fulfill all the prophecies, and usher in a new era. Jesus also claimed that faith in him was the only way to reach “salvation”, and not the faithful observance of God’s commandments. I was a christian before. Paul attempted to do away with the commandments of God as well, (saying circumcision wasn’t necessary, sabbaths aren’t important, etc.) just shows how wrong it all is. No MAN has the authority or power to do away with ANY of THE LORD GOD’S commandments.

@MegaLordBroly One of the founding issues with Christianity was whether non-Jews were included. Jews were 'God's People' and the covenant was signed arguably only between them and God. Fortunately most Jews today are accepting of non-ethnic-Jews into the faith, and Christianity decided to allow non Jews into it.

If that is the case, was kind David a gentile? The torah also teach us that the messiah will be a descendent of the bloodline of David, but if David was a gentile, will the jewish messiah be a gentile? Or did David's gentile lineage mixed with ''true jews'' throughout the ages? Many jewish sages were also converts or sons of converts. Can you explain your point based in the torah?

Thank you for making this video and showing such a diversity of view points. It certainly challenged my preconceptions about what a 'typical' Jewish person would think about this issue! We can all be quick to speak or argue our own opinions and convictions of right and wrong, but it's not easy to listen, and I enjoyed listening to the people interviewed here.

I converted 36 years ago, its not a easy process, most of my converen class were couples who were marring a Jewish person. For me it was because some how felt drawn to Judaism. Three years of studying. I have felt welcomed my my rabbi and members of my temple.

I don't find myself religious, but I really enjoyed this video. The fact that it was almost instinctual for everyone to say conversion is excellent is so powerful. As the one girl said, sometimes the convert is an even better religious person because they chose it for themselves and learned more than a "born Jew" might have.
Why wouldn't it be "instinctual", it's common sense
It seems to me that some of the people were having trouble formulating why they felt they wouldn’t marry a convert. It’s not that they think less of them, as they made clear that they didn’t. It was that it may be harder for them to relate to someone with such a different background.

In fact, the Talmud literally proves things from the written scripture, and it is considered a logical flaw if anything contradicts anything from the written scripture. The Talmud is the oral law, while the Written scripture is the law written and by God and interpreted by the early Rabbis.

And as David is a descendant of Ruth, he is essentially born of a convert. Therefore the messiah (as he will born of the lineage of King David) will also be born from a convert.

As a convert myself, I have to say that I have met with nothing but welcome and acceptance in the Jewish community.
Welcome! Jews are not allowed to undertake missionary work and try to convert others. So if you converted on your own will we will always accept and treat you equal. It's really great and congrats!

You have answered a question that has plagued me for many years, and always kept me from converting. I had no desire to be the ever desperate hangers-on, forever doomed to wanna-be status. The answers your people on the sidewalk gave were invariably genuine, heartfelt and immediate, given without any sense of guile or ulterior consideration. Very well then.
@MikhailPoda yes, Jews aren't allowed to remind you of your conversion, which includes not using your former, non Jewish name. However it is appropriate to disclose during shidduchim, particularly as converts can't marry Cohanim. They have different soul roots (can't be true soulmates).
It seems to me that everyone here is accepting and supportive of genuine converts. Hasidic Jews just prefer to marry someone that was raised in a hasidic environment. Ultra-Orthodox Judaism is pretty hard core and I don't see a reason why it's bad that they wouldn't want to marry someone who isn't totally engrained in that lifestyle.

The second man was not correct to see converts as not 100% Jewish. We are supposed to treat converts, widows and orphans with special care and consideration-that is a Jewish law.
I think the reason why some orthodox jews wouldn't want to marry a convert is bc it can sometimes be hard to marry someone with a very different background to you. I wouldn't want to marry someone sefardi bc the background too different. That dosnt mean I don't see them as a full Jew.

Thank you so much for clarification . I need primary sources like these for my school/uni project. Is there a verse or a line from the Torah or Talmud which clarifies the Cohen dilema . ( clarified by Corey at minute 1.39, stating that "COHEN CANNOT MARRY A CONVERT". ).
@@stephenharper7044 not in the Torah and I don't think there is anything in the Talmud either. Moses married a convert. The levitical restrictions on cohanim (that nowadays are not really observed, even by the religious Jews) is not marrying a divorcee or a woman of "illegitimate birth". But if they do, nothing really happens as there is no temple and the temple "purity laws" do not apply

Anyone of any race or ethnicity can have red hair. Aboriginals, Asians, Africans, Middle Easterners... it's the result of a gene mutation, which anyone can have. It's just more common with Europeans for a lot of reasons that would take too long to get into. Malcolm X is a good example of a black person who was a natural ginger.

According to Orthodox rabbinical Judaism, yes. The Reform Jewish movement accepts as Jews people with a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother without asking them to convert, but Orthodox Jews (and the Israeli chief rabbinate, which is Orthodox) will not accept such people as Jews, nor will they accept Reform conversions to Judaism as legitimate.
An interesting question, or even a variation of every question you ask, would be "how do you think other [jews/arabs/whoever] would answer this question?".
I think *that* answer could be even more telling.

Interesting, so I was born in Poland to a Jewish father (100% Jewish on both sides, grandmother and grandfather, but highly secular) who in his 20s converted to Catholicism to please the family of my Polish Catholic mother (as the family was very traditional). Now, this does not make me Jewish because it only counts from the mother's side, AND my father, who is technically Jewish, converted to Catholicism. I am nonetheless interested in Judaism and have visited Israel many times (in fact my dad had 3 sisters whose children ARE still Jewish according to Halakha and 1 lives in Israel, married to an Israeli and they have 5 kids - my cousins, oh and by the way I have permanent residence permit from Israel). However, I personally would be unlikely to convert because my mother's family have specifically emphasized the importance of me remaining Catholic/Christian as I was baptized. For me personally, this situation is bizarre and funny at the same time. I love who I am, really.

Actually I don't think there's enough representation to secular jews. Most of the people here are on the religious side, very few are truly secular and none at all are atheists or close.
The truth is that there's a big majority of secular and mostly atheist jews in Israel who would probably answer "I couldn't care less what anybody does with their religion". I expected to see some of that as well, but I guess going after these people for this kind of question is a bit mundane and would get some boring results. :)

A Reform, Reconstructionist or Conservative Jew would have no problem marrying someone who converted or is Christian. And there are Orthodox Jews who marry converts. Look at Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

@@nurousek123 Plenty of Jews marry converts including Orthodox Jews, as long as they are sure that the convert was sincere and they undertook all the obligations of the religion. Some very closed ultra-Orthodox sects discourage marrying a convert and it's rare in those sects for such marriages to happen, like one of them said, if a convert tries to join their community they encourage the convert to marry another convert instead of marrying someone born and raised within the sect. But likewise if a secular Jew, born to a Jewish family but raised irreligious, and then who becomes religious, tries to join their sect, they will also try to pair that person off with another newly religious person or perhaps a convert. These ultra-Orthodox extreme sects don't represent the majority of Orthodox Jews though, and even with these communities there are converts hwo occasionally join and marry born members of the sect (although usually it's to someone who is divorced or has some other "skeleton in the closet" and whose "worth" has come down). Back in the 1960s there was a very big rabbi, the leader of the extreme anti-Zionist sect Neturei Karta who married a French convert from Catholicism, after he became widowed. His followers didn't like it much though, but he did it anyway.
But in the Modern Orthodox Jewish communities, both in the USA and in Israel, people marrying converts are not uncommon.

I know you do not qualify yourself as jewish anymore and it must make you feel extremely weird to get comments just like mine from converts and future converts, but I think you're more working on tolerance and love on your channel than anything else, and, in the name of countless others, I have to thank you for this too.
It doesn't seem much to you, but your videos are helping me, and probably others too, a lot !
In my case, your channel helps me on three points :
a. it remotivates me
b. it makes me believe there is a solution possible to the israeli-palestinian conflict

This idea of genetic purity, is inherently racist in my view and made up. My experience is people who convert to any faith , they tend to better people and follow the teachings of that faith more precisely without prejudice. Most 'selective' groups tend to just be about part of an elite. From a theological viewpoint, only God decides who is good, not people not religious leaders. My secular view is, actions determine whether you are good or not. Not belonging to any groups, faith or ideology. To say otherwise is extreme arrogance and will lead to eugenics issues, in my view Especially when they view groups as sub human. Our European history is already bloody with the atrocities of mad men who espoused such ideas. Let's not entertain such thinking for the sake of humanity. All human beings have rights, I don't care what faith you proclaim, what race, what nationality, what colour. If you believe in an ideology or theological belief, that is your right, and you have the right to practice it in peace and security without discrimination, but your liberty ends where my liberty starts. Religious law can only be applied to people who follow that faith, no one else. And that does not make people right. Its a belief, to be respected, but not accepted. To do otherwise would open up us to accepting anyone making up their own religion and imposing it on others. Europe had and has enough problems with this type of thinking.

@Yechiel Shulman I think that is over simplifying it and is an incorrect interpretation. Marrying within a tribe or sect is driven by a perceived assumption. If it was secular based, then you can say it's cultural or lifestyle. When religious based, particularly when is ultra orthodox, particularly with certain faith groups , the historical context they use, it's used as a genetic purity issue. I have seen it secular and religious groups in my travels. There are always exceptions. It's rarely about lifestyle.

I really think it's not so much to do with converts being seen as less Jewish as it is a preference for spouses who also come from Jewish families, given the importance of family ties in religious circles. Also, the comment about Sephardim wasn't referring to ethnicity, seeing as there is a religious (and as such cultural) difference between Chassidic, Lithuanian and Sephardic Jews in the ultra-Orthodox community. You'll often find that Ashkenazi Chassidim won't marry Ashkenazi Litvaks.
As a Gentile, I really believe there are a lot of important and beautiful lessons in Judaism. However, it is so tightly tied to a culture and history which simply doesn’t resonate for most non-Jews. I believe that culture and history plays an important part in its ties to Judaism for Jews. I wish there was a way to make the universal lessons more accessible to non-Jews.

when you convert, you join the jewish people, their culture and history. It becomes yours as you become a part of the jewish people in far more sense than just religious practices. You can see it as naturalization. In the past, the converts basically assimilated into the jewish culture and rarely, if at all kept any aspects of the gentile culture. In modern times it is different of course and cultures are mixed to a certain extent anyway. But if the jewish culture and history do not resonate with you at all, I'm not sure why would you want to convert and join the jewish people then.
There is an interesting correspondence between one Obadiah, a 12th century convert from Islam, and Maimonides, a prominent philosopher and influential Jewish scholar in the Middle Ages who lived in Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Palestine. Obadiah wrote several letters to Maimonides, asking about the status of the convert in Judaism. Could he say the parts of prayer that refer to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as his forefathers? Could he thank God for having taken “us” out of Egypt or thank God for not having made him a gentile? (not that there is anything bad about being a gentile)-all parts of the standard prayer liturgy. Maimonides replied to his letters, assuring him that he could. As a full-fledged member of the Jewish nation, Obadiah was just as much a descendant of our forefathers, and heir to the Jewish tradition, as any other Jew.

i'm not maori, but am from NZ originally. i'm converting with the reform movement in north london. if you are interested in it, i would recommend going to local synagogues for shabbat, see which one you like, i don't know how much choice you'll have in nz? it's been a very interesting journey for me so far, there's lots of resons to convert, but make sure you think it through first, because it's not easy,.

Remember: In-group biases exist, and nearly everyone has them as an instinct. Don't feel bad about it. Recognize it, and get past it. Let that feeling flow through you, don't feel as if it actually holds any significance.
If you feel that feeling holds significance, either it will color every encounter with that out-group person, making you second-guess every thing you say to them, or you will begin to trust that instinct as if there is really a reason not to trust the out-group person.

How does it work when you can prove you are genetically jewish with DNA testing, yet your great great great grandparents on both sides converted to christianity 'back in the day'? I refer to myself as messianic jew as I'm genetically jewish, but raised christian and follow both parts of the Bible. But I have no idea how jewish people would view someone like me. If your lineage gets lost (i.e. due to diasporas or forced/voluntary conversion) do you count as jewish?

The fact that the parents are directly involving themselves in the love lives of their children by selecting their future spouse is what makes this an arranged marriage. I'm an atheist, yet I see some of these videos where the individual is open minded and understanding to new people and caring for them regardless of what they believe but rather who they are. This is what we need in the world that will bring peace. Accept different views and judge on character as fellow human beings. Great videos. Gives a good look is how people are automatically categorized as Muslim, Jewish, Atheist, etc can be friendly, but that it is the predisposed ideas people hold that separate us.

I remember hearing about an Ultra Orthodox Jew of Eastern European decent who married a convert to Judaism who was an American of African Descent. His convert wife learned the faith and now helps teach in a Jewish school.
Hebrew seems to be a very efficient language. When ever I watch subtitled videos of other languages it seems like someone is screaming out a whole history and explanation of an answer and all the subtitle says is something like "not much". Here I cant even keep up, I think there will be a few word subtitle and the words are flashing across the screen.
I don't find it more efficent than English, Russian or Spanish (the other languages that I speak) to be completely honest...
