Thank you for your comment. As to your question, I used tape to protect the adjacent areas, then a damp sponge (the cheap kind you use to make accent pillows). I get a square foot of it at the crafts store and it lasts for a couple of years. As soon as a piece gets dirty, I toss it and use a new piece.
I am not a colorist, so I don't think so much in terms of a color scheme. I mostly consider the color temperature, and decide if I want it to be dominantly warm or dominantly cool. I love the combination of Sienna and Ultramarine Blue, so those colors come into play in most of my landscapes.
