Puccini died before completing "Turandot," so he never chose a tenor for the role of Calaf. The only singer he had chosen was Rosa Raisa for the title role. After the opera was completed by Franco Alfano, Toscanini, who conducted the Italian premiere, chose Miguel Fleta to sing Calaf, with tenor Franco Lo Giudice alternating with Fleta in subsequent performances. Fleta said later that the role was too taxing for his voice, so Giacomo Lauri-Volpi was cast as Calaf for the American premiere at the Metropolitan Opera. Lauri-Volpi and Fleta were not only colleagues but friends and were photographed together in Italy.

L'interpretazione di Lauri Volpi mi pare superlativa. A mio avviso la voce personalissima di GLV il cui squillo ricorda l' acciaio e l'argento ma è capace di mezzevoci eteree ben si addice al personaggio fiabesco di Calaf. Tra l'altro Giuseppe Adami, il librettista di Turandot attorno agli anni 40 in un articolo rivelò che Puccini aveva scritto Turandot pensando alla voce di Lauri Volpi. Tra l' altro ho la fortuna di possedere una bella lettera autografa in cui LV ringrazia Adami per aver scritto l'articolo in questione. Come è noto alla prima alla Scala Toscanini, che aveva avuto un diverbio con LV alcuni anni prima scelse Miguel Fleta, voce meno eroica ma più sensuale forse più adatta ad altre opere di Puccini. Lauri Volpi invece assieme a Maria Jeritza ebbe modo di cantare la prima assoluta di Turandot negli Stati Uniti al Metropolitan di New York
Se la voce di Lauri Volpi è "troppo chiara", allora bisogna rivedere tutti i canoni legati alla voce umana! Lauri Volpi possedeva una voce unica, di grande volume, squillante come una tromba d'argento, ricca di colori e piena, la vera voce eroica e verdiana! L'interprete, che aveva cinquant'anni, è senzazionale e trasmette in massimo che ci si possa attendere dalla lettura di questa pagina!
I prefer this to the studio recording. In the studio recording Lauri-Volpi went a little overboard with the contrasting dynamics and couldn't decide if he wanted the rendition to be veristic or bel canto. In the end he went with both. He might have thought it a happy medium, but I respectfully disagree. The live recording is more bel canto and suits the aria better. There is also an interesting "wistful", almost spiritual quality to this interpretation, which I find very fitting for Calaf.
Love your comment. I think Corelli himself said that Calaf isn't really a dramatic tenor role but more of a heroic bel canto role. Hence the ease in which Filippeschi and Lauri Volpi sang it.
At his peak he surpassed all other tenors, in my opinion, but in later days developed many mannerisms. Here he takes liberties with the tempo and the text, and for me is too melodramatic. Many of the great Italian tenors, after achieving success, became very mannered and self-indulgent.
A golden treasure of the tenors that doesn't get enough recognition for my liking.
