Making a list of all your railroad rolling stock and locos is a great idea not only for the reason you gave but also for those who insure their layouts, how many undervalue the cost paid out to buy everything or don't add their railroad to their house insurance
I did this last year made a spreadsheet for my trains and my train books. Some of those old train books are hard to get and costly. I just looked at an old book fron the early 2000 and they wanted double the price it first sold for and the book is used
@@edwardaudet8367 sadly some people forget the insurance for their hobby, not just railroads. It must be stated when getting or renewing to make sure it is covered, know how the insurance companies like to take the money and not give it out if it is not part of the cover I could see them saying sorry we don't pay out as it was not part of your premium
Another free thing you can do is organize your leftover and spare parts from kits and projects. My way was not totally free as I used ziplock bags, but the boxes that kits come in would work too. For example: I put all spare freight car parts in a bag(which after 35 years has grown considerably 😊) The other day I received a freight car which had a stirrup broken off and after a bit of searching I located a perfect match. At least I had a place to start looking.
Love suggestion #1. Can be a real pain to keep the area clean but it really does help to make the railroad stand out! Great video. Enjoying it with my afternoon coffee. :)
Great advice! I'm starting on building a 2x4 modeling railroad having a hard time with it, due to I like operations but also like watching trains going around. Drinking folders coffee with a little bit of french vanilla creamer.
Thanks Jimmy good advice especially on making list of what you have. I have to clean up after I build something for my layout or my cockatoo will get in to things. My little helper hahaha. I am going to build my layout around lake with cabins and people fishing. I like to fish 🐟 GOD BLESS and keep up the great advice.😃👍💡
I had a list, I used to carry it in my car when I went to train shows. I lost it somewhere and then I ended up buying two of the same Red Caboose N Scale "Beer Cars". They were offered in two different WP paint schemes and now I have duplicates! lol
My work bench looks like yours, and my modeling ideas come from actual prototype areas, so it does cost to get to those places, but totally get what your saying. Love the coffee and trains segments keep up the great shows.
Your magic coffee cup appearing and disappearing throughout the video! :) Great free tips. I have been doing a ton of research lately, and forced myself to make lists of my items because I had bought a few duplicates.
I drink Hills Brothers coffee straight black. I make it a little more stronger than normal. I also like Cafe Buesto coffee. It is very rich and good. You have to be careful when making it because it is a very robust coffee. I enjoy your videos.
It depends on how I feel. We have a french press and a grinder for specialty coffees. We have a keurig and a nespresso for quick cups. Nespresso is the best single serve machine I have ever tried, but there are so many k-cup companies.
I take cream & sugar, and use instant coffee. Nothing special there. Well, except for the creamer. Kroger brand Cinnamon Creme, which tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Making it part of a complete balanced breakfast. Free improvement idea: keep eyes peeled for roadmaps of the area you model. Not sure rest areas still have these for free, or at all. However if you can get one of the area that you model, you can trace the railroad route with a red sharpie marker and tack it to the wall for visitors to have a point of reference. Second free improvement idea: whether modeling real businesses or make believe, a small card print out briefly telling about the business behind a piece of clear plastic attached to the fascia, kind of like in a museum. This creates a learning experience for visitors & operators, as well as breathing added life into key industries. If you wish to add more info than fascia space allows, make “layout at a glance tour” booklets on a home printer. Visitors & guest operators can take it home too!
Another great video as always, was wondering if you could touch on an issue sometime about measuring towns and factory and etc. what I mean is how do you adapt in a space for like if you want to put in a town with a factory that is 20 miles apart and so on ,so it doesn’t look like their on top of each other, for example my town has a train station 10 miles from a bridge how to depick that on layout
Gezz Jimmy I've been asking on most EVERYONE'S Channel's How to Inventory not just for Re-buy but When I vaperize myself,,The kids, Gnd.Kids ,Wife will know "where their inheritance went lol
I need to update my rolling stock inventory. I was doing well for a while, but then I got behind and never caught back up. And yes, I have accidentally bought duplicates.
Looking at other people's layout ideas is indeed a great and free way to enjoy the hobby. Any advice on how to stop looking at other people's layouts and start building mine for free? ;) Have a great day.
I use k-cups and a milida funnel to drip my coffee, at this time I have a medium roast dunkin donuts and maxwell house. I like it milk and no sugar, my wife tells me I'm sweet enough.. Ha Ha !! As far as my railroad my work bench is full of projects and junk, but believe it or not I know where every thing is ? My railroad is SP & CE, a made up railroad base on family names. I've been at it for a while. On and off, with my two chief engineers growing up into the part.
Good morning! Love the video! Just curious, would anyone be interested in buying my homemade ballast and rock/ mountain formation? Super cheap! I'm trying to figure out the best way I could go about this. Any tips on that would be appreciated! Not sure if I should make a website or what. Thanks again!
I buy Defenders of Freedom, a medium-dark roast from a local veteran-owned and run coffee roaster/coffee shop called Pale Horse Coffee. With a local coffee import warehouse here in Chesapeake, VA and the Port of Virginia next door, it doesn't get more fresh than this! www.palehorsecoffee.com/collections/medium-dark-roasts/products/defenders-of-freedom-coffee-1
Sorry, a little disappointed. The term click-bait springs to mind. I have an Excel spreadsheet of EVERYTHING I have ever bought for my layout and I would need an attache case to carry it around with me!
I totally get where you are coming from with that and I was a little unsure about this video. I ended up deciding to go with it because we get so hung up on what we can buy to make are model railroads better that we end up with a bunch of stuff and we still aren't happy with what we have.
I do not drink coffee, I am a hot chocolate person. I really like the "Marvelous Mint Dark Chocolate" from Castle Kitchen.

How do you add your railroad to your insurance or do you just do that at a time of a claim?
@@dannobilly when you need to renew or first start you should add the cost then. And as you add to it the total needs to be taken into account
@@stevebryce-grant1107 sounds good I'm starting an Excel spreadsheet as we speak

I'm Famous now!!! I was mentioned on THIS show!!! Woooohhoooo coffee n trains!!!
Maybe one less espresso in the morning 🤣🤣
A friend of mine worked the railroad for a little over 10 years! I love picking his brain and asking him questions!

Love #4! Specially for freelance! 😃
Great suggestions for free improvements, Jimmy. I'm sorry to say I'm guilty of not doing all five! Watching today with Black Rifle Coffee CAF, black.

Dunkin Donuts coffee with cream only this morning. Good video.
Good sound advice. Thanks
Drinking McCafe with Bailey's... Not my usual choice, but it's what I've got today.
BTW, congrats on TMTV with Jimmy's Trainworks.
How do you make your coffee? Tradition pot, French press, chemex, something else?

Tunnels, scene dividers, bridges.. etc work really well. Making a road non direct also helps, like going around a hill to hide the line of sight.
