  • Josh was Dr. Paley's first rotationplasty patient twenty years ago. Rotationplasty is a surgery designed to reconstruct the leg in patients with severe forms of congenital femoral deficiencies. In these patients, the femur is too short to lengthen. Rather than amputate at the hip, rotationplasty converts the existing knee joint into a new hip joint and the existing ankle joint into a new knee joint and turns the leg around 180 degrees. A prosthetic is then fitted onto the new ankle joint.
As you can see, Josh has full function of his leg twenty years after the surgery! He can walk, run, jump, and even walk on his hands!
Josh had this to say about his outcome:
    "Dr. Paley,
I know it's been many years since I've seen you face-to-face but I do remember that you are the man who helped me to walk. I wanted to personally thank you for making a normal life possible for me.
Thank you so much for the knowledge and skill that you invested into my leg to make it so I could lead a normal life. Flying has been a dream of mine which I have only been able to pursue though God's grace and also through your expertise in my surgeries. I overcame some challenges early in my flight training because of the good range of motion I have in my leg, thanks to you! I am happy to let you know that I have obtained my pilots license several years ago and I am currently working towards a commercial certificate.
Almost a year ago I met a beautiful young lady who is now going to become my wife. I'm thankful that I have the ability to walk down the isle with her instead of in a wheelchair. I know you are the one God used to make all of this is possible and for that I am ever thankful for what you have done for me!"

I have an RP, and I was riding a bike about a year after my surgery, and that was only because I didn’t have access to one earlier, riding a bike is actually very easy. I can do everything on a bike the same as before except for letting go of the handlebars. That’s only because my leg oscillates more than goes straight up and down, as you can see with his running.I’m sure I could have been riding 4-6 months after my surgery
