- Japan has its share of scares: earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to name a few. But of all of the scares, one must not underestimate the occasional typhoon. These tropical storms can really disrupt life, and recently as we were moving our home office to another location, Typhoon Mindulle came storming in. Would the storm end up being a small inconvenience to life, or a massive, scary interruption like Typhoon Hagibis years ago? Here's the next episode of Life in Japan.

I lived in Japan when I was a young'un from 2 until 6, in the mid 60s. We rode out a few typhoons, sometimes in the bathtub with a mattress at the ready. Happy and terrifying memories. Blessings to your family!

普段はいい景色ですが台風が接近した時、多摩川などの河川沿いは強風の吹きさらしになるので要注意ですよね💦

Japan has less than 1% of the world's land area, but more than 20% of natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons,heavy snow and volcanoes are concentrated in this disaster-prone area.
This is one of the reasons why renewable energy such as solar power generation and wind power generation do not spread.
Solar panels and windmills are often destroyed by natural disasters, causing damage to people around them.
Deforestation by mega solar has caused many landslides and mountain collapses when it rains, causing deaths.

Same here in our region in the Philippines. Even it was a normal storm, it feels like it's a typhoon. Climate change is so real. I remembered last Christmas we were hit by a typhoon and I just woke up like our house was merely wet gladly. We secured everything but it sucks to eat all the food we prepared until new year. We have no choice but to consume it all. I am thankful that everyone here is safe. Please do take care always guys. ❤️🇵🇭

typhoons were scary when I was in Japan, because I live in San Diego and had never experienced it. We were inside costco when it hit and everyone had to evacuate.

The only time I encountered rain in Japan was in Kyoto. I live in San Francisco where there are a lot of hills, and during the heavy rainy days, I am not any victim of floods at my residence, but if the storm drains are clogged, that is mostly on the flat parts of the city.

Your video reminds me of the time NJ, where I grew up, was being hit by a nor’easter. I walked to the bus stop before school and waited and waited while being soaked by sideways rain. I finally gave up, walked home, and found out school was canceled.
Oh no!!!!! Wow- at least it was cancelled and you didn't have to stay in wet clothes all day long!
Feel you on the typhoon, my Dad's house was flooded by Florence in 2018, thank goodness he passed a few months earlier and didn't have to go through it. Too hard to lose your home after 62 years.
Wow- that would be tough. I certainly have a softer place in my heart for anyone who has had flooding.
As you say, people living in Japan need to worry about typhoons. However, hurricanes (as well as tornados) are also serious and "iconic" natural disasters that cannot be ignored. They damage the US almost every year and claim the precious lives of its people. The picture of a 2005 Hurricane Katrina victim floating face down in a river is still fresh in my memory.
Looks fierce! We had a storm here recently in Australia that’s knocked over several trees and flooded many areas.
Make sure to stay safe! I’m hoping to teach English in Japan when I’m finished with my Japanese degree here.
Watching these videos is nice to get a peek and what it’s like to live there. :)

Oh my God, I remember the typhoon Hagibis two years ago, because we have planned to travel to Japan for the first time, .... and we had to cancel all of our reservations because of this typhoon...;-( and we were so so disappointed. Now, we know that our first time will NOt be in autumn !!
If you come late autumn, it's the perfect time to visit (November!)

The naming of Typhoons alternate to the different languages in SE Asia and East Asia.
Typhoon Hagibis. Hagibis means Fierce or Fast in Filipino.
I didn't know that was the meaning of Hagibis - a proper name for that storm!

Sadly in Japan, there are typhoon casualties every year. Daddy's house is in danger of flooding, but our house is in an area where landslides are a concern. Refrain from going out unnecessarily and hurry if you need to evacuate.
decades ago , the construction of the embankment on the Kawasaki city side of the tama river was completed , but that was not completed on the Tokyo city side due to the opposition of the residents .

I went to school in Tulsa for 5 years!! Now those were scary storms!!!!

こんにちは。昔からLife in Japanさんのビデオを見ていますが未だにベッカとアナの違いがわからないのでお父さんでも間違えていたのでホッとしました。
台風夏休みアメリカで過ごしたからアメリカが恋しいし帰りたくなるよね。
目の前が多摩川なのですね
これは台風来たらヤキモキするしかないわ
一昔前に比べたら治水もしっかりしてるのであのクラスの台風だったら大体持ちこたえられると思います
夏は夏で台風があるけど冬も冬で爆弾低気圧という魔物がいます
台風ほどの強さはないけど大陸から強烈な寒気を引き込んで日本に大雪と冬の嵐をもたらす白い魔物
特に東京とか雪に慣れていない地域だと一発で交通がマヒし社会は数日に渡って大混乱
映像の地域だとだいぶ内陸寄りで雪の量も多くなるので冬の間も警戒が必要です
あと息子さんの怪我もだいぶ良くなってきてるようでよかった

In America they go around trick or treating, but not so much in Japan! It's more just decorations and such.

私は台風の多発を招く地球温暖化は二酸化炭素は関係無いと思っています。
理由は日本で地震と噴火が多発しているからです。
大気ではなく地球のプレートの移動が活発な時期なので、地殻の熱が高まって海水温が上昇し気温も上がり台風も多発していると思います。
神奈川県の箱根山大涌谷のガスが私が子供の時代と比較して多いのも、それを証明しています。
また、日本の戦国時代(西暦1400～1600年)は日本や英国は小氷河期だった事が古文書の天候や農業に関する記載から判明しています。
つまり近代まで地球が“寒冷期”だったので台風は少なかったのだと思います。
逆に温暖に成りつつある現代の方が人間に不都合なだけで地球には普通なのだと思います。
考えるまでもなく、恐竜のいた時代は熱帯雨林だった地域が多かった事も皆さん常識として知っている事ですし。
二酸化炭素排出権の議論をするより、自然林や街路樹を増やす事に議論を向けた方が町に日陰も増えて街中の気温は物理的に格段に下がります。
日本の歴史では1700年前の古墳時代頃と2600年前迄の縄文時代も温暖で、今の東京地方や神奈川県の平野は海底でした。
なので今の温暖化は、地球の平常時への回帰の時期に当たり地球にとって台風が多発するのは当たり前の普通の事で、日本人の縄文時代開始から16000年超の歴史を見ても異常ではなく普通の温暖な気候に地球が戻ろうとしているだけでしょうね。
縄文時代の14000年間の歴史でも地球は寒冷な時期も温暖な時期も有りましたから、現代人から見て住みにくい環境に地球が変化する事や不都合な事は、実は地球にとって何の問題も無いでしょう。
