How? What about for beginners without any DIY experience who just wanted to find out how to access a stairwell globe? This video leaps into constructing wooden frames and stuff, it's clever and I'm sure it's DIY-boner material, but for those who struggle with DIY like I, it's far in excess of my abilities.
@@DanielVerberne I realized that I wrote that comment a while back and your point is valid. I don’t even really agree with the comment I made in fact. Best video ever! I do all my house renovations at home, and I've been trying to figure out how to change all the hideous 70's light fixtures on my 17 ft ceilings since forever. I'm a tiny female and not strong, so this is something I can do myself. Thank you sir!
So I'm a master HVAC technician and a Journeyman Electrician, and I'm that guy that will lean over the rail to exchange those out every now and then, and so far, I've been lucky. But I know my times coming where luck runs out. I tried thinking of a handful of different ways to go about this but this right here, os worth the extra 15 minutes of work. Thank you sir!!
Thing is, I was once young and agile and took risks. But now I'm 78 and the challenge of replacing the LED downlighter bulb right over the stairwell is something I keep putting off.
I’ve been looking at precarious looking stair ladders online all weekend... I should have known that the king of DIY would have a better solution. Thank you! 🙌🏻
Excellent idea! Big brain!👍 An electrician I called, quote me for $1,100.00 to install my chandelier. I saw this video and your stairs has the same layout of ours, I went to Home Depot to purchase the materials to build. Cost me only less than a hundred dollars and it took me to build and install about 8 hours including break time. I just wanted to thank you for posting this video! 😁
Thanks for the tip. I was able to replace the light fixture in my stairwell today. I couldn't figure out how to place a ladder to reach the fixture. You saved me tons of time and money.
This is the best solution to such a situation. In the past I've built a intricate scaffold which was quite OK, however it a) took ages to build b) minimized movement through the stairs, and c) it was a pain pulling it down. Thank you Jeff.
I'm trying to figure out how to install the stair light in our newly-remodelled house. I was thinking that we should have installed the light before painting the walls, so that I could have nailed-up a ledger. Your solution is pure genius! Thank you, sir!
I installed a new chandelier with the help of this video at my new home in Toronto, ON Canada. Electrician was asking $500 CDN did it with $35. This works!! Thank you so much for this video. saved me ton of money. I wanted to share picture but it isn’t allowing me to add one. Thanks again!
I've been trying to figure out how I was going to change my stairway light fixture for the last couple months. I finally decided to rent an extension ladder. This is so stupidly simple, yet absolutely genius, I'm just sitting here flabbergasted right now. Thanks for such an elegant solution to an annoying, and potentially dangerous problem! Subscribed!
FREAKING GENIUS!! I love DIY creative outside the box ideas how to do things alone since its rare I'll have immediate help of others when I want to do things around the house or when I do not want to hire someone to do it for me. I'm going to get my scrap wood together right now and made me a platform today to change out a 20' ceiling fixture. OMGosh I'm sooooo excited! :-)
I've been racking my brains and going crazy on amazon looking for a supposed scaffolding-looking structure to support me while I try to replace my broken ceiling light. Now you've shown me a solution. Thank you very much.
I've been dreading the day I would have to replace the lightbulb over the stairs in my house. This is such a terrific idea that now I am excited to do it. Thank you so much!
@DaveGhidiu and I used your technique to change a chandelier in my foyer about 5 years ago - worked super well and honestly it’s thanks to you that I didn’t die trying to do it with a long ladder or something. Thanks!
How innovative! Our new house will have one of those fixtures above the stairwell (although it will even have an opening to below) and the first thing I thought to myself was "How do you get up there?". This is a lot cheaper than scaffolding and even way more cheaper than a chandelier lift.
Ok, I haven't installed my staircase light for 10 years now being it around 17 feet above the staircase and didn't want to spent big on a special ladder. This will do the trick for me, thanks!!
I did it after watching your video.. using same idea to make platform according to my stairs ..I wanted to send you pictures of my project but anyway, Thank you so much for the video.
I have a light in a tricky spot too, but I was going to create a platform by drilling the 2x6's right into my wall until I saw this video. Your solution is way better. Genius!
My initial thoughts before seeing your video was find three studs and screw 2x6 horizontally into wall securely. Then run a few planks on top and screw ends into horizontal 2x6. Then have to patch screw holes and paint wall area afterwards. But all areas challenging to reach with this stair configuration.
Good video. Just FYI, the light switch being off doesn't guarantee that the power is off to the light. Someone could have accidentally switched the neutral instead, and can really surprise you while your'e up on that ladder.
I too have a similar job in hand and was looking for ideas. Great idea, practical and simple. I would however support the two legs against the wall from swaying sidewise.
Thanks for sharing it! and I love your system. Do you think it would be safe for 16 feet length space from the front wall to the opposite side wall? I need at least 14' lumbers to adept this concept, and I wonder if it would be okay to use 4 of 16' 2x6s? Or if it's too long for the load?
@@kristawolf6687 I ended up renting the interior scaffolding from HD for $50/day. It worked great. The best part was it fit in my 2011 Subaru Outback.
Thank you so much for this most informative how to video. I've had a beautiful lighting fixture for a few years but uneasy on how to get to the cathedral ceiling safely. Entryway light is in split level home this technique you've shown will work perfectly. It'll cost more than $30 though but worth it instead of hospital visit or paying electrician >$100 to do
This is such a smart idea. My house does not have a fancy stairway like that, in fact I live in a ranch house so no stairs, buy I will remember this if I ever upgrade. Thank you.
Share with your friends. It is amazing how many ladder injuries happen every year just because people are willing to take the risk not realizing how dangerous it is.
Nice, simple, smart and safe! Thanks for the vid. I was thinking of drilling into my wall, this saves from doing that and can bear much higher loads. Thanks!
Great Creative Thinking to make a job that seems so out of reach possible! Yes, it is not going to be a quick project, but it sure helps to solve the problem of accessing a high ceiling in an open area on a stairway. Thanks!
I tried this on a spiral stairs and failed. Is there something specific that I need to do for spiral stairs ? Or does it simply not work for spiral stairs
Jeff, my electrician has suggested using 2x12 boards for the platform and I was wondering if there is extra support required for the frame. The gap is ft. Thanks
I love your thinking! I have a small similar problem, but my stairs are straight and parallel leading into the downstairs hallway. I have a short wall of my upper floor where I need to fix the problem fixture. could I do something similar to your setup across the stair well?
I have been looking at purchasing a ladder to do this but it'll be about the same price for the materials to build this platform. I'll go with the platform idea. Thanks! Edit: why didn't you use your laser?
So we just borrowed our neighbors 22 foot little giant and my husband zipped up there and changed out the light fixture himself. But this is a very cool idea.
What do I do if I have sheetrock wall instead of railing? I cant support my studs on the second floor because I can’t pass them through unless make a hole in the wall.
So simple so brilliant!! I'm trying to figure out what the 123 people who disliked this video are thinking. Maybe they own shares in stairwell ladder companies.
Thanks for the idea! I might make one comment; when you said, "Make sure the light switch is off first.", well that might just get you killed. That is, if the switch was wired to break the neutral instead of the hot. Yeah, I've seen it done. ALWAYS check those wires with a meter to ground. No need in building that safe structure if the first thing you do is get electrocuted! :)
I have same issue and this is a great video. One thing that still bothers me-what’s to say all that moving around doesn’t cause the support legs from kicking in at the bottom of the stairs? Or am I overthinking it?

Omg lifesaver; my lights went out in the stairwell I'm super short and clumsy wasn't sure what to do to fix it. This solution is super doable!
