I have to say, as a 22 college student, John was the reason I really started getting into the Dead, and now I can't stop going back and listening to all the old live albums of the Dead! So whether you love him or hate him, he is introducing an ENTIRELY new generation to the Dead. You should have seen all the twenty-somethings at the Dead & Co. show along with the old timers ;) it definitely makes for a very interesting experience and purely about the music.
Don’t you think that when the decision to add JM to the band, somebody thought about this exact thing. If the Dead are to continue into a good future, it’s going to need several younger players who not only can drive this train with the soul needed, but actually become the new Dead and Company. Bob, Bill and Mickey are seriously getting on in years. John , Oteil, and Jeff ARE already the new Grateful Dead. Just my opinion.. rock on
I think alot of us, well speaking from personal experience, people born in the 90s, were a bit turned off by the whole Dead Head culture of the time. Sort of writing off The Dead when we were younger for stupid reasons or because we didn't identify with the people who seemed to really like them. The culture if you will. Staying closer to Pink Floyd, SRV, Hendrix... It's superficial but that's my experience. It is absolutely incredible to be introduced to so much new music via Grateful Dead at a time when it is so refreshing.
Hell yeah! I have seen Dead & Co. 7 times now, and I knew after the first time that I will NEVER say another bad word about John Mayer ever again! Lol!
Cory Rice, I was completely against Mayer when I first heard the news. I wasn't even gonna give it a chance and was down playing the whole thing. Boy was I ever so wrong! I would have really missed out on one last good dead reincarnation of my life! Can't wait for more.
Mayer's solo is unbelievable! He understands Garcia's music and works within the musical conventions of the Dead, but at the same time brings something new with his own sound. He is the perfect fit for the band to continue for many years to come.
I would like to hear him affirm his commitment (not that he needs to have it, if he wants to venture off so be it). I would love to hear that he will continue this music for years to come, I'm young (21) and have loved going to the 3 D&C shows I've been to (plus the Dead back when I was in 6th grade lol). Next year I will go to as many shows as possible, including Mexico, because I couldn't bare to miss this opportunity. They're so amazing. I feel connected to the scene that existed before me.
PS if anyone wants to donate to my Lockn fund please! I'd love to go to this festival but I just can't afford it right now (I live 2500 miles away so I know it's pretty far out of my cards).
After this performance, my dad looked at me and said this was the best Althea he had ever heard. He saw the dead hundreds of times...Mayer can really play man
Me to man,,, it was so good that I drove back 3 hrs to go to the 2nd show on sat....Got lucky and bought a few of the last tickets online sat morning printed and right back to chicago...Was a great weekend...
Man both nights were outta sight. Drove almost 12 hrs to get there and solo worth it. The place was on fire, such a great atmosphere. Can't wait till next year, These guys are way past legit so stop all the Mayer bashing, he can let it rip!!
John is THE most perfect fit for this role. He respects rock history, is a master guitarist and has adapted to the vibe of the Dead with utmost sincerity. Perfect way to pull Mayer fans into the Dead and pull some older Dead heads into John.
Its such a treat to see the talents of Mayer finally be recognized, hes been a transcendent musician since day 1.. Ive Been a fan of Mayer since Day 2... (2002) Neon acoustic got me hooked, He's gotten even better over time and he fits in perfect with the dead and the vibe.. I hope Dead And Company is a band for as long as possible

SICK!!! What an unlikely guy to fill Jerry's shoes in this incarmation of the group - but damn, if this doesn't make a believer of the JM critics, I don't know what will... He's got like '77-''78 Jerry energy in that soloing - just smokin'!!!
That guitar solo before the bridge was pretty smokin'. I was wondering how far Mayer was going to take it. A little different version of Althea from the Jerry days when they used to ride the outro off into the sunset. Nice rendition none the less. Sure the boys got some goosebumps during that.
What an Althea. This is so good that it should be released on a Dead and Company official live album. This and Jack Straw from Citi Field 6/24/17 are so incredible. They should both be on disc 1 of an official D & C live release.
and Bobby's awesome, he has to follow and go with this guitar slinger. I was there, everyone looking around with that stunned WTF look, and it kept going and going
Incredible. So glad I had a chance to see the current band in Jersey this year (with my son which was so cool). Hope they can run it out some more. John Mayer really rocks it. Trading leads with the keys was a blast...
All I can really do is add to the same family comments about the fact that John Mayer has got to be one of 10 best guitar 🎸 players alive, he blows me away every time he plays and I've been on the 🚌 bus since 76
yes I believe I heard him say so in an QnA on Instagram- that Althea is his favorite . Plus I believe this is the song he played with Bobby on the Late Late show where Bobby first heard the Mayer magic and it all began . He owns it imo. Jeff compliments so well also.
John was a totally out of the box pick to be the guitar player for this group. I could definitely think of several who would be great but John has really proved himself with the band and deserves his spot. One guy that does come to mind is Jimmy Herring although he seems to have found a good home and family with Panic!
Me and my buddy walked into the stadium at the start of althea... We came all they way from California and thought there was a June 31st (their isn't one) and were driving 120 on the Interstate to get to Wrigley. We lit one up and listened to the music. All the anxiety of getting to Wrigley was released. We also found out we missed jackstraw... Cheers!
Oteil looks so happy to be in this band, and when he hears John finally getting it. He just smiles the whole time. I think he plays bass so much better than Phil ever did.
Mayer has really grown into this role. I didn't think much of his playing in this context early on, but I'd go see them now, for sure. But I have to laugh - Bobby's no better playing slide than he was when I first saw him try it back in about 1978. Seemed like Jerry and the rest of the band just kind of put up with it then and this version of the band still just kind of puts up with it...

Brendan Fowler same here. He's brought upon a new musical obsession for me that I'm truly thankful for.
Brendan - welcome to the dead man. happy you found the music.
Same Same.

John Mayer is a phenomenal guitar player. This is unreal.
Hell yeah! I have seen Dead & Co. 7 times now, and I knew after the first time that I will NEVER say another bad word about John Mayer ever again! Lol!

I was at this show 4th row such a great Althea
Mayer's solo is unbelievable! He understands Garcia's music and works within the musical conventions of the Dead, but at the same time brings something new with his own sound.
He is the perfect fit for the band to continue for many years to come.
YOU ARE COMPLETELY CORRECT ! JOHN FITS IN MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. THIS COMING FROM AN LONG-TIME DEAD HEAD !!
Amen!
I apply this song like a salve.
After this performance, my dad looked at me and said this was the best Althea he had ever heard. He saw the dead hundreds of times...Mayer can really play man
Your dad is a wise man...this is one of my favorite Althea's EVER, as well! ;-)
ditto, I'll be 68 in September, was at this show, Mayers inceredible and I agree with your dad . Dad's always know
Im sure your Dad is a good man, but nothing compares to Nassau 81'
Tbc are you referring to rockpalast by chance? Just wondering
You should listen to the one from Jiffy Lube. Just look up "Althea dead and co jiffy lube" it's better than this one.
the Boys had a blast playing last night.....the energy at Wrigley was electric! Good people....good times.....one of the best shows I've seen!
Benjamin NgDung
I couldn't agree with you more! The atmosphere was absolutely electric!!!
Me to man,,, it was so good that I drove back 3 hrs to go to the 2nd show on sat....Got lucky and bought a few of the last tickets online sat morning printed and right back to chicago...Was a great weekend...
If only everybody in this world was as cool and loving as everybody at a dead show...
Man both nights were outta sight. Drove almost 12 hrs to get there and solo worth it. The place was on fire, such a great atmosphere. Can't wait till next year, These guys are way past legit so stop all the Mayer bashing, he can let it rip!!
I drove 3 hrs home and then woke up sat morning and found one of the last tickets online bought one and drove back...The shows were that good...
Imo one of the best Althea’s ever
Best Althea I've ever seen. John is killing it!

THIS IS GIVING ME CHILLS!!!
This is one of my top versions of Althea too
This song was mind-blowingly awesome at the show. Thanks for posting
Kyle Dahl steal your face
This was the last show of this tour and absolutely banging every time I watch this takes me right back to center field at Wrigley field
One of the sickest guitar breaks I've heard in my life
He does it with Sugar Magnolia too 😳.
How lucky that John Mayer discovered this great music and is using his skills to keep the Wheel turning. Thank You JM and everyone else on stage.
Mayer's ability to outline chords melodically is astounding, he definitely gets the whole Jerry minor/major third thing. JG would be proud!
Thank You homeslice for getting this film
SICK!!! What an unlikely guy to fill Jerry's shoes in this incarmation of the group - but damn, if this doesn't make a believer of the JM critics, I don't know what will... He's got like '77-''78 Jerry energy in that soloing - just smokin'!!!
BB_in_ Maine i
He’s totally channeling Garcia with a bit of refinement....... genius
Absolutely Fantastic Capture!!!
Thank You Matt!
favorite Althea for Dead and Company so far. Tasteful soloing, great interplay between guitar and piano and really good finish
Absolute fire. I wish the whole track were here.
That guitar solo before the bridge was pretty smokin'. I was wondering how far Mayer was going to take it. A little different version of Althea from the Jerry days when they used to ride the outro off into the sunset. Nice rendition none the less. Sure the boys got some goosebumps during that.

Dublin china Ryder from Blossom as well. I'm dying for them to put up soundboards on Apple Music. They have all of last summers.
Last nights show was amazing!!!!
this is the best version of this song with this group i think
has anyone found any version they like more??
Jiffy lube 2017 Althea

2019 John boy playing the Wolfie
Oteil, Mayer and Chimenti laid out a Berklee Masterclass during this song. Bobby was jaw dropped, and I'll post the photo when I find it.

my favorite althea version. its enthralling and beautiul
One of my very favs- Althea. 🖖💜
awesome job channeling Jerrys guitar sound and signatures. A reverent tribute.
What a fantastic night it was.
We were in Chicago for both shows and this was one of the highlights. Can't say enough about JM, but Chimenti was awesome as well.
Mark Shipp so was Oteil but he could have been louder in the mix
Jim Carroll Mo doubt, Oteill is unreal. Both he and Jeff deserve full billing. Oteill's vocal on Fire was also outstanding.
china doll
Happy Birthday John Mayer. Great performance!
the song that got John hooked on the Dead apparently
yes I believe I heard him say so in an QnA on Instagram- that Althea is his favorite . Plus I believe this is the song he played with Bobby on the Late Late show where Bobby first heard the Mayer magic and it all began . He owns it imo. Jeff compliments so well also.
17 people are just trying not to like this.
his voice is getting better at delivering the emotions of the songs, his guitar has always been but the vocals are catching up
thanks,
John was a totally out of the box pick to be the guitar player for this group. I could definitely think of several who would be great but John has really proved himself with the band and deserves his spot. One guy that does come to mind is Jimmy Herring although he seems to have found a good home and family with Panic!
I fucking love at 7:05 when he turns blues mode on again. His ability to just dip in and out of that at any time is fucking phenomenal.

Such a nasty lick
Give me a good Althea, and the world moves through the heavens perfectly.
Mayer is a beast
Bobby gets to play with some classy guitarists and piano players..blessed life
Mmmmm, makes me all warm and fuzzy inside
Oteil looks so happy to be in this band, and when he hears John finally getting it. He just smiles the whole time. I think he plays bass so much better than Phil ever did.

Nice camera work
Jerry was the supremo........but J.M. is doing a fine job of caring the torch
Matt Frazier, do you have any more from this Chicago show? It seems like it was a great one. If so can you post them. Thanks
I don’t know this bass player but he played with Tedeschi Trucks at the Crossroads Festival in 2010 - who can fill me in? I love the call and response between John and the keyboard - another musician I don’t know.
This looks and sounds TERRIFIC!!
My wife and I got engaged right before this show - I've been looking for some kind of dvd/soundboard ever since to commemorate the occasion (our first anniversary is coming up in September). Althea is one of my all time favorite Dead songs, which made this 2 night run in Chicago all the more special. A shot in the dark... does anyone have a link to a download or site that I can purchase a dvd/download??? It would be much appreciated. Thank you for the upload - obviously got me in my feels.
good work
And im from Miami I flew in for 1 night
what more do I need to say about this cat I've said it from the second I heard him with bobby on the Kimmel show or whatever latenite gig that was he guest hosted and they did Bertha he respects these songs he embraces the creation aspects and interpretational aves within the structures of the grateful deads' catalogue how each one can be broken down dissolve into a point in time and reemerge different and new the next time around he is on par with jerry by all means he plain brings IT, that part of what jerry had that innate improvisational virtuosity that can bend songs around their theme while keeping the honest also bob billy and mickey might be the best backbone or rhythm section ever, the bass normally resides there but bob really lays that track to move along because Phil and now oteill are so far out there being the dark matter and doing the song long one phrase bass line just caroming in and Ot you feel them more than audible injest them
Althea is the GD song that was calling his eye, and why he got on the Bus.
Why is this video cut off short? It was full length until the end but now the last part is cut off. Could someone fix this?
yeah, not sure either, might have to do with Nugs claiming it... I'm trying to fix it
Interesting - a claim shouldn't affect the duration (either blocked or not). What I'd try if I were you is to go into "Enhancements" (wand icon under your video), Click "Revert to original", then click save. This will force youtube to re-encode your video again from the original file. If this happened due to a bug or glitch on their side once the new version is processed and it replaces the current it should (hopefully) be resolved.
cool, solid advice. I just re-edited w 'Trim' and it does show the full length there, so I'm waiting for it complete. If not, then I'll revert. Might have to do with uploading over cell data this weekend, but shouldn't. Glad ya'll appreciate the vid, thanks
Nice! I would actually recommend using revert even if the trim function gets it back to full length. Adding trim (or any of youtube's enhancements which are generally blah quality) will re-encode your video from the first YT encode at not very good bitrates. There'll be more loss due to that. All good either way but something to consider once the "untrimmed" version is live. Thanks for the nice filming. Subscribed.
thanks man, didn't work. just tried the revert to orig.. probably be live in an hour or so
mayer now owns this song.
Well yeah.
Krys Karr hahahaha
absolutely outlandish thing to say, and this is coming from a huge john mayer fan
John Mayer channeling Jerry Garcia's guitar playing 😃
Wow
This space is getting Hot$
Surprised he wasn't playing his super eagle ii all night.
