    I loved this movie. Haunting and beautiful performances by all three of these actors. Charles’ career is definitely one to keep an eye on! He is more than deserving this awards season.

    He was amazing in that movie so heartbreaking. It makes me think of that boy Villi and how he was stuck in that marriage with that woman.

    Incredible cast and movie. Charles blew me away, the way he carried his trauma was so evident. I slowly started to really love this movie.

    Josh, this chat is great!!!
    I don't know about the performances award wise to respond to these comments (they were all super strong) but the editing was truly incredible and deserves the Oscar. They knew just how long to hold on glances and stares and cut fast enough to not let you fully intellectualize moments until the end. Incredible. So was the script. I don't know how much was added or discovered in production, but if it's all there on the page it might be the best script of the year or the last five. If you're confused or perplexed watch it again all the answers are in the dialogue in the first part of the film. Its something seemingly complex that isn't. And is brilliant for it. Abuse is simple. And elizabeth gets to the truth by the end. But unfortunately for her, the truth is not that complex or salacious. It's only made salacious by morbid vouyerism. The sex scene is so damn good. With so many fucking layers of psychology and ends with a gut punch. The only negative was the music for me, but I understand the choice. Maybe if it had been mixed with less volume I would not have minded as much. Regardless, it's one of the best films I've seen in so long. Also, in my opinion she lied at the end. The key is the hunting scene. It's all about control with gracey. This kind of cinema is exciting. I'm so glad I saw it. Truly great filmmaking.

    It’s weird to see Natalie and Julianne praised so much (yes, I know they’re phenomenal in other films) but here they seemed very robotic. Charles on the other hand, embodied that role. Wow. 👏🏽

    • @bintarchetype
      @bintarchetype 6 місяців тому +12

      I think that was the point of their characters though. Like the essence of their characters, when you get to the crux of them, was that they’re putting on a performance. That’s the diabolical nature of it. If they seemed robotic, in my opinion, they understood the assignment and made their characters lack humanity and emotion (which I agree with to some extent as this was superb as it added depth to their performance) because their characters were not good people lol. To each their own but I agree Melton was the standout but Portman and Moore held the film together and truly elevated it without a shadow of a doubt.

      I disagree about Natalie and Julianne. I think they are just so good, we expect this from them already. Meanwhile, I’ve never seen Charles in anything. His character was very subdued. And he had moments of realization where he lets out all his emotion at once because he’s never allowed normally. I think it’s the characters they are playing. Joe is just a more interesting character because of what he went through. Natalie is just playing a shallow actress who manipulated people. Julianne is playing someone who thinks she is the main character and everyone should revolve around her feelings. So they played less likable character stuck in their own ways. Whereas Joe is just realizing he is not himself.

      People talk about Barbie getting “snubbed” even though it was nominated for Best Picture (so not a snub). Meanwhile, no one in this movie was nominated?! It seems like maybe they are just too good at what they do. 😅

    OH Julianne thanks so much for saying that you too get annoyed when actors claim to "understand" an experience because they've acted it as that is something that annoys me soooo much... it's so unbelievably pretentious, arrogant and self-centred!! Also when actors keep using the word "literally"... it is NOT literal when it's acting, as profound as the acting experience can be!!

  • @JDMimeTHEFIRST
    @JDMimeTHEFIRST 4 місяці тому +1

Julianne is playing someone who thinks she is the main character and everyone should revolve around her feelings. (Her older son from the previous marriage seems similar to her). So they played less likable character stuck in their own ways. Whereas Joe is just realizing he is not himself.

    Very good thoughtful movie but disagree with the ideas the female actors overlay on their characters. They bring their west coast perspective and complexity to an entirely different situational reality, while only Joe/Charles' cultural reality makes sense. Hated the score which was over the top in trying to create a sense of horror and tension. Watch out Austin and Timothée, there's a new young male lead in town!!!
