This is not a new system. Nor is that statement a critique. I commute daily to Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry. Four of the older vessels employ the Voith Snyder propeller system which allows them to dock in 1/4 the time of the newer ferry's. It can mean the difference between catching your connecting subway train and being early to work or waiting for your train because the newer boats take so long to dock. The Voith Snyder system is the best ever designed and they have every right to brag all they want.
As a layman, this was well explained and easy to understand. Looks like a real bit of quality engineering. The rotating rudder looked interesting but was not fully explained tho.
I too am a layman and found the opposite, it did however involve a lot of self congratulatory back-patting Just finished watching the vid on the Hamilton Water Jet /watch?v=qg14dKSByM8 that is how you properly explain your product to someone who at first may only have a passing interest in your product. They keep it simple with a lot of easy to follow demonstrations
How does this compare to the Azipod which are capable of 360 degrees (looks like electric) propellors which PULL the vessel rather than push it. The cruise ship one of largest on this planet 'Freedom of the Seas' has these Azipods. I am curious to what advantages these Voiths have over Azipod. (Just one other thing: have you any plants in Nederland, internationally, or just in Norway?) Takk/Bedank/Thanks!
@@nobodyspecial313 Also note the difference in usage, which the video makes mention of: "If your ship continually goes straight ahead, this is not the propeller for you". A ship going continually straight ahead will wear at the same point on the bevel gear, and wear that point out. This is designed for ships that are continually changing direction (tugs), so the wear is distributed across the entire gear.
"...rudder skeg provides stability...and produces lift..." Hey bro...it's a fucking tugboat...lol it's not lifting shit!! 😅😅😅 on another vessel....perhaps. seems inconsequential really. (the lift it's rumored to produce..)

i like the addition of the gesture based screens, very futuristic, too bad they don't actually use that kind of stuff yet!
Our apartment smells of rich mahogany and has many leather bound books!
😂🤣😂
Nice, good job Seamen
They already use this. It's very useful in tugs!
This looks really clever
looks like a lot of gears and moving parts the z drive uses hyd. pumps to turn the prop and rotate the unit 360 deg.

fireengineer the rudder is stationary...it does not move...it gives the propulsion a fulcrum to pull against....the boat is steered by propulsion
@@jonathancarnahan5180 great explanation sir, bravo!
You guys are well educated..

wish i had the chance to apply the term "hydraulic"
over complicated CYCLOROTOR
nice design nice power but not easy maintenance.... when under water cleaning hull....cleaning propeller will be not easy
tri wicaksono the ship will have to be drydocked for that
+samanli2014 thats will be no cheap maintenance..... but this verygood propeler
Is it the same Voith that make bus gearboxes?
yes!
Feels like they translated it into a Chinese movie, then had the actors dub it into English. Oh, the..pauses, lmao
I guess they tried to make sound more authentic instead of scripted. Ended up making it sound like Agent Smith from the Matrix.
Technology for the elite their businesses and of course let's not forget the military, .

The azipods take much longer to change direction. The Voith system can go from full ahead to full astern in a very short period of time.

3:09 are you sure it can beat the Controllable Pitch Propeller I´ve got one on my boat and I´m pretty sure it is faster ;)
Don’t be silly. It’s not for speed necessarily. Immediate reaction and power.

cringe worthy narration and use of marketing suits as minority report agents
