【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

I almost can't believe that Kotaro actually stopped eating so he could go call Hana to share the feast.
That otter's a better person than most people.
Even more that Hana actually let Kotaro have the rest of the food left. It was like she knew that it was the Professor's special day and let him enjoy it.
That's a damn straight comment. It's a strange world when otters, cats and dogs show more kindness to each than other people to people. We gotta work on that don't we?

As someone who doesn’t know a lot about otters, its mental to see that they can display concept of choosing/prioritising and sharing. Very intellectual animals!

To say that Mom and Dad go all out for Kotaro’s (and Hana’s) birthday is accurate but it’s not even nowhere near the most important thing. Many rich people give their children big and expensive but meaningless birthday parties. It’s like, “Here’s $10,000...go buy yourself a big birthday party” or they just pay for a big birthday party.
If you looked at these birthday parties that Mom and Dad gave their fur babies they do it with so much thought, love and care. I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent the whole day preparing for Kotaro’s birthday party from doing the decorations, to the setups, and the food, etc. It’s simply beautiful and heartwarming to watch. Happy birthday little buddy Kotaro. 😊

This video was an absolute feel good video! Kotaro was so excited that he had to dance on the chair first to get his emotions under control, so cute! And the look on his face when he looked at the buffet, he looked touched, so adorable. Of course the most important thing is his kibbles for one wet, one dry, such a humble guy. And how he later fetched Hana so they could celebrate together was so sweet
I don't ever think I've seen Kotaro get this excited, he was spinning in circles on the chair back. Like you mentioned, it sure wasn't long before he ran upstairs to get Hana, so he could celebrate together with his favorite lovely lady. This sure was a wonderful start to our Wednesday🎂🥳🎁🤗

I do wonder what K told H when he ran upstairs. "Hurry Hana, you won't believe the feast they prepared for my Birthday, you're going to Love it. We gotta get downstairs right away and start celebrating together! :-)

Subscribed! I know someone who adores otters and I recently fell in love with them too. I've seen many videos of Kotaro and Hana - and the music just makes you feel so joyous to witness them. Seeing them play and be vocal will zap away any bad mood. Kotaro chewing on an otterbox phone case brings a smile to my face.
