    Where I work/volunteer, we have a 16" gauge petrol-fired G-16. I say "fired" but it's a diesel/gasoline engine, technically. Specifically, it's gas-mechanical, but still, it's quite fun.

    Great! I really like these locos.
    That reminds me, my uncle built a 3 1/4" Heisler that I got to run on compressed air at a steam show last year.
    If I were to build a tiny steam loco, it would probably be a Sentinel vertical boilered locomotive of some kind.

    • @CSXGirl822

      It's part of the signaling system the railroad has in place. They're pressing/bending those switches as they enter into another signal block, so that any oncoming trains can divert into passing sidings or so that there isn't too bad of a cluster/traffic jam when there are multiple trains going the same direction.

    I see a lot of these trains include tank cars. Are they just models, or are they running propane to make steam?

      Some burn coal, some burn propane. Propane is normally stored in grill or food-service propane containers.

      They're for the signaling system the whole railroad has. Lots of places are double tracked or have passing sidings, so signals are needed as there are usually multiple people running at a time.

    Hello, im interested and in need of someone to come or a place to take my grandfather's steam engine for repair. It needs the boiler rebuilt. He built it in the 70s and it ran until 2009. Four generations have enjoyed it and now a five generation needs the experience and joy but grandpa has dementia now and can't do it alone. If any knows of a place or someone near Pittsburgh PLEASE reach out to us via Facebook, Heather Pugh picture of a new born with a saying " I love my grandson to the moon n back"

    • @CSXGirl822
      @CSXGirl822  3 роки тому +1

      True for the most part, although I've seen it takes multiple people to get one of the locomotives back on when they derail more than just a few wheels. There's a horror story from this particular little railroad about a locomotive rolling down the hill just before you get to the tunnel... I don't want to imagine how difficult it was to get that one relocated!

    Fun fact: The largest steam engines in operation today are US nuclear aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines. They are steam-electric but still steam driven nonetheless.
    And of course, electric cars that are charged from lines serviced by coal or nuclear fired power plants are essentially steam powered at one stage of their energy conversion. Steam is the most efficient form of energy generation to this day and it is not going anywhere soon.
