Eating the crusts first is, to me, a good idea, because the cooler they get, the tougher they are to chew. If you wait until they're cold, they're almost inedible. I like them warm dipped in ranch. It seems to me that it would make sense in your case to eat them first, for the reason that they're easier to chew when warm.
