I feel many of the talking points are exaggerated. One example is downplaying the size of LL to USD exchanges due to things like "traveling to Turkey". If in one year a million Lebanese citizens and non-citizens with accounts at Lebanese banks bought plane tickets for $1000 per trip, you're looking at $1B less USD deposits in just one year. Add to that all the spending on both essentials (e.g. medicine, motor oil) and accessories (e.g. chocolate bars, plastic surgeries), and the numbers add up really quick. However, it is still true that insiders have abused the favorable exchange rate to make millions and billions of dollars and send them out of the country.
You can't blame people for what they do with their money they've earned as long as they've earned it legally.. it's not their fault that their governement had been running a Ponzi scheme and stealing everyone's money for the benefit of the few assholes running the country and giving the people the crumbles so that the show can keep going

But most estimates rank the support of the peg as the main reason for the gap in bdl and the banks, around 60-70% of the money went into supporting the peg. And yes ppl with higher income benefited more than low income ppl, estimates is that 20-30% of high ses individuals consumed 80% of goods and services

I have heard this narrative in a lot of places and especially from politicians and people in the mainstream media (whose agenda whether close to the governement or the "opposition" is well know to everyone).. that narrative basically says that it s good that the lebanese people fell into this crisis because they were living outside of their means, traveling, shopping, eating in fancy restaurants... and while i completely understand that as a country as a whole we ve been living a lifestyle that waaay exceeds our income as a nation, blaming this problem on the common people who made their money legally is shifting the responsibilty from the politicians who kept borrowing the money and ran a ponzy scheme with it instead of investing it in long term projects
