I completely agree with you on this. "All" airlines are jumping in the same trend of simple basic theme... #Boring (American Airlines, Delta, Air Canda, Air France, Latam, Finair, Aeromexico, China Southern, Qantas) just to name a few.
Emirates will finally make a daily flight between Mexico City and Barcelona. The final destination will be Dubai but, Emirates has been granted 5th freedom rights, so you can buy tickets from Barcelona to Mexico City and viceversa omitting the Dubai part of the flight.

In the coming months you can add: Air China, Korean, Norweigan (Long Haul), Cathay Pacific and LEVEL. Plus airlines from all over Europe, North Africa and Middle East. Don´t sound to me as a Regional airport with small or domestic airlines.

Maybe this is why Aeromexico will be doing direct flights from Mexico city to Barcelona in October.
