Really weird hearing the Square space advert as been hearing it from Matt Armstrong for months now. Love the A3 8P platform, the best IMO. I have both an 8P and 8V Sline. Prefer the tech in the 8V but the look of the 8P. Looking forward to the content!
I just got a 2009 A3 2.0TFSI Quattro in NZ. Its an amazing car and im lucky that it had a great owner before me and they have looked after it. I would love to see you repair and make the car look new but some cheap mods as well
Go K04 as it's OEM+. Easy and popular route for these/mk5 GTI. If you use 2nd hand parts you can do it for only a few hundred and it transforms the car.
Aww an old A3 I had mine for 16 years and it had 170k on the clock when I part exed it. The only thing wrong with it was rust where the jacking points were. I enjoy your mechanical videos. I hope this Audi is not as much of a headache for you as the V8. I woould keep it standard and I look forward to seeing how you get on. (Also really hoping that you are able to restore the V8 Audi).
intermittent errors are because of low battery voltage on these cars. charge the battery, clear codes, run the engine for 10 mins and check codes again. then you will have a true image of which codes are thrown. i had this on my E60 BMW , on low voltage battery i had a TON of weird fault codes.
Haha you bought the same car as me! Mines Ebony Pearl, bought it for a cheap in between car after returning a RCZ THP to the finance company due to having it 3 days and the head gasket going, it then broke down 2 more times after that. Any way the A3 drove so much nicer and I’ve fell in love it so kept it! Mine has the lighting pack, auto wipers but no parking sensors. Some great content would be changing the timing chain, as I bet yours has started to be noisy on startup, Cam end seals, carbon clean from intake, pcp valve (smoke from crank case due to blockage?), upgrading the turbo to the K04 perhaps, retro fitting things like cruise control, (only needs the stalk and VCDS) lighting pack etc.
I would upgrade the turbo (if that's the fault's source) and leave other stuff standard. And get them mapped together up to the limit of the weakest link. You'd still get 250-260ish bhp I reckon and the K04 or whatever upgrade turbo would be running super safely, far from being maxed out.
My son as a S3 with the same engine. I run my own Mechanics business and rebuilt the top end for him. Not easy engine to work in the car and it looks like you are going to be doing the turbo on yours. The exhaust manifold is a pig to remove a lot of bolts you can not see and the left hand side were the turbo is is almost impossible to remove and even worse to get back on in reassembling it . My advise his to drop the engine to work on it a lot easier. Good luck and looking forward to more videos.
Yes, that looks like a pretty good sign of total turbo failure... I'd put it back to standard, if you modify it to S3 standard then the next owner is going to be paying S3 insurance premiums, unless they don't disclose the mods to the insurance, in which case they won't pay out if you crunch it. These were fairly popular with people who couldn't afford, or didn't want to pay S3 money and insurance, and it's likely they still are as they give a lot of the S3 driving experience at a much more affordable level...
This is exactly what I want from a car channel, I’m late to the game of mechanical interest. Lots of comments advising restoring it to stock with your financial interests at heart and I think I agree. TFSI is direct injection? If so, how choked up would you expect the valves to be? Nice project, good luck.
I'd go for full on S3 spec, with scrapyard salvaged parts ( apart from the turbo obvs ) it's a mod a lot of people would like to do for a cheaper pocket rocket.
i would like see you get it running again and just see cost of replace turbo etc and how to do it, great content and your just so honest with everything and just say as you see, can't szit for next part 2
Another great video with some mechanic bits thrown in. I’m all for entertainment but it’s great learning when watching a professional fix a car related issue. £700 smackers seems a bargain if it’s just the turbo? In terms of mods, I guess it depends on whether your keeping it or using it for content in the channel. I would go balls to the wall on some sick mods.
Either keep it stock, and move on if it’s not a tidy car, or if you wanna go down the modded route then make it into an S3 type replica and change some cosmetics aswell as that may help claw some money back when it comes to selling it.
Ko4 conversion; would be good to see the process , and whether the early tfsi engines can handle it... fragile at best... watch oil pump chain sprocket bolt... and the damn cam chain slap 😁

Hi, i think if you go down the mod route you will not get your money back, cost of spares and time. Keep it simple, replace the turbo and give it a good service and of course replace the door card and boots. Good luck
Keep it standard. I don’t know if the Quattro system is the same as the haldex on the Golf. I’d be wanting to at least service that as I’ve known them to sometimes be iffy.
Awesome video! I can’t wait to see the next episode... I would just get it back to standard, but make it as nice as you can. Sort out the cosmetic bits with interior too!! 🙌🏼
From a business perspective fit a KO3 and get it out of the door, as you say there maybe other issues. From a Dubnut point of view, KO4 all the way but, it is like using £50’s to wipe with 😂
I think that, even though it’s fairly clean body wise, you’re not going to keep it, it’s a flipper imo. New turbo, sundries, service (poss timing belt kit?), MOT and let someone else have their fun with it if that’s what they want to do? Really enjoy this channel mate. Inspiring
I’d keep it standard as with the age/mileage increasing the power will probably cause more problems, possibly with the drivetrain and probably wouldn’t increase the value. Enjoying the videos 👍🏻

My bro has 2l tdi and is solid Had a fair few miles on it (130k) on purchase but it drives nice and feels sturdy. S line 2008 black one. Few bits of wear n tear but the engine n drive is solid.
It must be the turbo because I had the exact same engine problem as you ! I sent the turbo to be rebuilt and had to do a major major clean of all the air intake system !!! And I had to have it Walnut blasted ! Tfsi are terrible for carbon buildup.
New stock turbo New steering wheel and arm rest on the door. Mini service Discs and pads Cv boot Missing undertray support tyres Valet Sell. 700 is great for all that car so you shoukd be good to make around a grand on it I reckon. Keep it stock though.
If it had less miles I'd say go big with the K04 etc...but unless you're gonna do a full rebuild--new rods, bearings and all--the engine will be too taxed. As an A3 8P lover/ owner, I think keeping it stock would be the reasonable route with this one, imho.
Keep it original. That's how it was designed, and you will hopefully get some money for your time. The turbo swap is a good learning project for us all.
Dean, keep it standard, its worth more.I am a dealer and i hate cars that have been modified,it makes the average person wary and the cars never drive as as good. That was a good buy at £700,its a popular fast hatch and when sorted should return a good profit!
once you've determined the fix, I'd look at both options and consider which the most advantageous modified to k04 (S3) 'sleeper' spec will make it more expensive to buy and insure and will have a smaller market appeal, back to standard might have a wider market but make less money. But as modified it might stick! depends if the turbo is an easy fix or not. Or find a buyer and then give them the choice.
I would probably stay stock and look to the potential to recoup a tidy profit. Availability and price of stock parts (both new and used) will avoid a hefty outlay on a car that is knocking on 14 years old.
Would love to just see you restore it to original or OEM+ with the S3 parts. Whatever floats you’re boat, I just think it’s cool that you show us you’re work. And love for you to earn a nice buck aswell!
100% I would recommend a balance shaft delete if you start modding i had to get a new engine because the sprocket on the balance shaft seized and killed my engine
I would definitely keep it standard and I do like these more affordable cars on your channel especially with mechanical problems.

It must be the turbo because I had the exact same engine problem as you ! I sent the turbo to be rebuilt and had to do a major major clean of all the air intake system !!! And I had to have it Walnut blasted ! Tfsi are terrible for carbon buildup.
Looking forward to this, I like the mechanical videos 😎
New stock turbo
New steering wheel and arm rest on the door.
Mini service
Discs and pads
Cv boot
Missing undertray support
tyres
Valet
Sell. 700 is great for all that car so you shoukd be good to make around a grand on it I reckon. Keep it stock though.
You don’t want to lose money, keep it standard and fix it up. 😎
K04 conversion! Limited sale market but good content....sleeper finish....no visual changes :-)
good choice of project i like the mechanical work you do
Ko4s front mount intercooler bigger injectors stage 2 map and 3.5 downpipe catback and a methanol kit ( service and upgraded water pump
And weld your crank pulley or 4mm pins in to crank
If it had less miles I'd say go big with the K04 etc...but unless you're gonna do a full rebuild--new rods, bearings and all--the engine will be too taxed. As an A3 8P lover/ owner, I think keeping it stock would be the reasonable route with this one, imho.
go for the 360 bhp upgrade, would make for a good series , get it dyno'd b4 and after the upgrade, wanna c the magic
Keep it standard and put it back to its former glory and keep up the good work
Get a KO4 in it! I’ve got a mk5 GTI and I’m wanting to do it soon so it would be nice to see someone else tackling it too!
Looking forward to this whatever you decide. I've got the Octavia Vrs with that engine in. So I'm interested in seeing the turbo being replaced.
Keep it as standard, may struggle to get your money back on a tweaked motor.
Keep it original, Sort the interior, a deep clean outside and in. Make it nice and presentable.
Would love to just see you restore it to original or OEM+ with the S3 parts.
Whatever floats you’re boat, I just think it’s cool that you show us you’re work. And love for you to earn a nice buck aswell!
I would keep as standard 200bhp not to be sniffed at.(let the next owner spend out the big bucks) great content 👌
Quick flip roll on to the next one don’t waste money mate 👍👏👏👏👏👏👍
100% I would recommend a balance shaft delete if you start modding i had to get a new engine because the sprocket on the balance shaft seized and killed my engine
Repair and get rid. Not likely to make money jazz'n it up. Lovin the content.
Keep it standard but clean it up. The engine is not new, so you could spec it up only to find it fails with some other serious (expensive) issue.
i would stick to standard buddy
Good to do a potential ‘sleeper’ but the resale would be limited. See what’s going on then make some decisions from there I’d say 👍🏼
