This was the first Oscar Awards I was allowed to stay up and watch, I was 9 years old. In the 1980’s, I was lucky enough to meet many celebrities and movie stars. I was happy to see one of them here tonight, Juliette Prowse was lovely to meet, you don’t hear too much about her any more, but I remember her beautiful smile.
5:38 - One of the nominees for Best Costume Design (incidentally the only award it was nominated for). (Co)incidentally, "Cromwell" (at 5:04) won the award for real during the actual ceremony.
Oh, and not to mention John Marley who would portray director Jack Woltz. If I were him I would check under that blanket when he goes to sleep. You never know what you might find.
I remember this opening scene for the Oscars.Leigh Taylor-Young was lovely in that brief scene with her then-husband,Ryan O'Neal. Ironically Leigh left him not long afterwards-and it was the best thing she could have done.
Another great opening.! Would love to see Shirley singing Whistling Away The Dark...But I guess it's the rights issue. How about McQueen presenting Best Picture to Patton??
thanks for uploading this old ceremonies. i would verymuch like you to post the 1964 ceremony , with tom jones and tony richardson winning best picture and director, and the supporting awards to margaret rutherford and melvyn douglas

Who did Ross Hunter have to pay off to enable the horrific "Airport" to be nominated for Best Picture? It wasn't even one of Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin's best films. Watching the stars' arrivals, Ali MacGraw should have stayed with Robert Evans and Ryan O'Neal should have remained married to Leigh Taylor-Young. Quincy Jones, the composer and conductor, was coming into his own after years of arranging and conducting for Sinatra and other luminaries.
Danielchai S You're probably thinking of "Airplane,"(1980) w/ Robert Hays, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges which was a parody of a film fr. 1957 called, "Zero Hours," as well as to "Airport (1975)."
Amazing music!! One of the best Oscar shows ever. Thanks so much, Quincy Jones!
I Love this video. I wish there were reruns of the old academy awards.
I love the academy awards. It gives an opportunity to glance many stars at one time.

Great to see Quincy Jones conducting the orchestra.
I was a lot younger when this show aired, but I remember being enthralled even then by the Oscars!
Harry Belafonte--most handsome man ever!
So refreshing to see bald heads
So refreshing to not see cell phones
Or Women that look like Mickey Roarke
I've been looking for this forever. Thank you!
Wow. What a difference from today's Oscars. Class and restraint vs slovenly trash.
Steve mcqueen, the biggest cheer.
9:37 Jack Woltz handing out the Oscars 'I was gonna make her a big star!'
Posting these Openings in their completion is fantastic. Please keep 'em coming!
Thank you for this!

I love this! THANK YOU!!
I like the way it sounds, Quincy!
Wow, Omar Bradley from WWII and D-Day. Robert Evans who got The GodFather produced.
Oh, and not to mention John Marley who would portray director Jack Woltz. If I were him I would check under that blanket when he goes to sleep. You never know what you might find.

That NBC Peacock... I LOVE IT.
Quincy Jones should've won the Oscar this year for The Out of Towners soundtrack
great opening!
The registered trademark is to the left of AMPAS' name. Interesting. (I notice those kinds of things).
i hope you post the rest of the cerremony. it is the only one that is not complete. thank you academy
I love Sarah Miles’s dress, she looked just like a queen
Jeanne Moreau Looks very beautiful
Patton has great sound mixing.
someone should have told the cameraman during rehearsals that most stars don't want that closeup as they walk up to the podium
Another great opening.! Would love to see Shirley singing Whistling Away The Dark...But I guess it's the rights issue. How about McQueen presenting Best Picture to Patton??
I too would like to see Shirley Jones's rendition of "Whistling Away The Dark", but that may not be possible.
thanks for uploading this old ceremonies. i would verymuch like you to post the 1964 ceremony , with tom jones and tony richardson winning best picture and director, and the supporting awards to margaret rutherford and melvyn douglas
Why no short subject? Sally Kellerman's presentation was very funny with that kid from USC
Amazing!!! I love the Oscars!!
Interesting. Glad to see how it works.
Hi...Do you happen to have the whole show?
So Cool :)
Didn't know any network other than abc carried the Oscsrs
NBC aired the Oscars from 1971-75, then ABC took back the rights to the Oscars and continues to air the Oscars today.
what an entertaining opening monologue…oy vey. Get the hook!
Jack Nicholson was not in Love Story
Now I understand Oscar
How about uploading the full show?
There are just a few videos missing from this ceremony. Please post them!
I was surprised this was on NBC. I thought it was always on ABC.
Academy awards long time ago
Back them I was -6 years old
style matters
Love Juliet Prowse's dress
he and she at the oscars :D
Why does the opening announcer state that Jack Nicholson has a nomination for "Love Story"..? Mixup?
Hank Simms is the announcer.
I'm here to see the people that's dead now
MASH should've won Best Picture.
One of the best openings.
I liked Five Easy Pieces and Love Story but I didn't like Patton and I hated Mash. I've never seen Airport.
1:06 : handsome Maximilian Schell
I Love You Daddy!!!
Is still oscar continue to use orchestra or not?

"Airport" is an excellent film and it deserved the nomination. Stop talking nonsense.
probyful Agreed. And it started the entire "disaster" 70's film craze. But there is something special about Airport.
MrImiller07
I thought Airport was a comedy
"Airport" is NOT a horrific movie. It´s good.
Danielchai S You're probably thinking of "Airplane,"(1980) w/ Robert Hays, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges which was a parody of a film fr. 1957 called, "Zero Hours," as well as to "Airport (1975)."
No political agenda……
In 1971? Oh, there was PLENTY political agenda, trust me.
This was before politics ruined the show.
🤡
Oh stop it. Must you complain all the time? Just enjoy the great movies of that year and every year.
It’s always been political. Get real.
