Yeah. If there's one thing Doctor Who fans have a 100% track record on it's disagreeing extremely strongly with each other about Doctor Who.
(26+1+19 years of Doctor Who on television, plus a bunch of non-television expanded universe material in between 1990 and 2004 (it continues today and started prior to that, but that's when it was keeping the IP alive), with fundamental changes in the show's core every 1-4 seasons or so meaning that different people grew up with vastly different interpretations of what the show even is will do that)

excellent review, and welcome to this crazy family of fandom . I was lucky enough to see some of the filming for this and meet Ncuti Gatwa, he is a lovely person and then was able to watch it in the cinema last night, it was amazing, there were so many lovely moments alongside the main story , as for where to start watching thats a hard one , there's so many episodes, and i love most of them though i do think the 2005 revival might be a more straight forward starting point as it gently guides new viewers into the history witout needing to know any back story and feeds in the history of the show gently, looking forward to your future reviews and remember the one rule of fandom which is Ignore anyone who claims there are rules

Ruby's mom just walked away from the church in "...Ruby Road". In "Space Babies" when the Doctor and Ruby were talking going to see the Nanny and it began snowing, the mory changed with Ruby's mom pointing at/torwards the Doctor. She wasn't always pointing until after he had gone back to save Ruby from the Goblins.

So, the show is split up into 3 eras, plus a movie.
    ● 1963-1989 ("Classic Who")
    ● "Doctor Who: The Movie"
    ● 2005-2023 ("New Who", or "Modern Who")
    ● 2023-Present day (Some call it "Disney Who" due to them giving money for marketing and production, and the show restarting the number count for distribution on Disney+. Could also call it "Refreshed Who")
The renewing of the show starting in 2005 is probably the best place to continue, so you have the bulk of where a lot of people have experienced and loved the show.
But there are select stories in Classic Who that you could also watch to get a feel for the previous versions of the Doctor.
Edit: Admittedly, the term "New Who" doesn't work so much now with a second new start, so the term "Revival Era" could better describe 2005, and call the newest one "New".

@@takebackconstantinople82 actually, the seven tales of the tardis specials would be a good slick kind of whitman sampler of the classic series. each episode focuses on a different doctor, and does a pretty good job editing things down to a digestible size-plus adds some modern-day context that directly ties into the episode he's just watched.

I think starting with 2005 revival is the most logical trail to start hiking. As you become a more committed and engrossed whovian it becomes easier to wrap your head around the language and the history and then seek out the classic episodes that will help fill in lore. With so much material missing and even the stuff that does survive being near impossible to find or watch in any order the frustration of piecing it together is not something I would suggest for a new fan. I would worry they would lose the spark and end up confused and overwhelmed and eventually - bored with trying.
I say that as an old fan who watched as a kid in the 80s and learned to knit just to have a Tom Baker scarf.
60 years is intimidating. Revival era just seems like the most gentle and exciting entry point to ensure smooth travel.

  • @CaptainCookNo6

I think the “Penzance” sticker on Mrs. Flood’s suitcase may be a significant clue to her identity. Penzance is a town in Cornwall, but in the ancient Cornish language “Penzance” translates to “Holy Headland”. The area also has odd folklore, including an Arthurian legend about a place near Penzance called Lyonesse- a land that sank into the sea in a single night. She’s definitely a deity of some sort, but who knows what big plans she has in store? Only time will tell!
ALSO! An anagram of “Mrs. Flood” is “Old Forms” 🤔

Everything Mrs Flood wore throughout the season are throwbacks to previous companions and what they wore. Your theory of Mrs Flood being a god, could well be something ;) The scenes we see on the screen is from the original story of Sutekh - Pyramids of Mars from 1975. I have loved this season - most of this season has been flawless - with a few small niggles, but nothing that makes me dislike it (I have already ordered the DVD set, so that is definitely not the case there haha) I am glad you are enjoying this, being a New Whovian (welcome to the Whovians man!!) As far as where to hop on, thats a hard one, there is 60 years of Dr Who, I'd start from 2005 (as I notice you have already), and possibly dip into some of the classic Who to get some context (as far as references etc). Foundlings are tended to be named after where or when they were found eg a child found at Christmas could be called Eve,Mary, Joseph or Noel. Rubys mum wanted to give a couple of clues so her child was called Ruby so she left her in Ruby Road and pointed at the sign which could be seen on the footage. By luck she was given the name she chose.

  • @anthonybernacchi2732

The planet the Doctor mentioned with a name that sounds like "Gallifrey" was either Calufrax or Callufrax -- confusingly, there are planets of both names in the Doctor Who universe! Gallifrey itself was irrelevant to this story because it wasn't Sutekh who perpetrated the genocide there, so the reversal of death at the end of the episode didn't restore the Doctor's people.
As many other commenters have mentioned, the best starting point for earlier Doctor Who is S1:E1: "Rose" from 2005. Every episode from 2005 to 2022 is on Max, with the three 2023 episodes prior to "Ruby Road" on Disney+. Doctor Who had been off the air (except for a single TV movie) for 16 years prior to 2005. 2005 was also when Russell T. Davies took over as the showrunner for the first time, and, to an even greater extent than with the Ncuti Gatwa era, he carefully tailored the episodes over the next few seasons to be completely comprehensible to viewers with no prior knowledge of Doctor Who whatsoever, while still including references and subtleties that made them more meaningful to viewers with knowledge of prior eras (or, as in your case, a later era).
There are many other possible starting points, but all of them present problems that make "Rose" almost certainly a better choice.
The "Classic" Doctor Who series (1963-1989) is streaming ad-free on BritBox and with ads on Tubi TV. In an ideal world, S1:E1: "An Unearthly Child" from 1963 would be the best starting point, especially since it has strong narrative linkages to the Gatwa era. Unfortunately, there are several issues that make starting there virtually impossible. First of all, "An Unearthly Child" and the following three episodes are currently unavailable on streaming due to a legal dispute between the BBC and the son of the episodes' writer. (The episodes are available on physical media as part of the DVD boxed set "Doctor Who: The Beginning," which is still in print according to Amazon.)
More seriously, many other episodes from Who's first six seasons (1963-1969) are lost due to the BBC's former practice of wiping the videotapes of programs they considered no longer to have commercial value. Even this would not be so confusing were it not for the fact that the *soundtrack* of every single lost episode still exists. Doctor Who acquired a devoted fanbase very early on, and they began making audio recordings of the episodes as they aired. (If home video recording technology had existed in those days, there would be no lost episodes at all.) The BBC has released official reconstructions of many lost episodes. Some are fully animated, while others consist of still images and surviving clips from the episodes. Some are available on streaming, others only on physical media. Still other lost episodes have been officially released only as narrated soundtracks on CD and download -- but for all those episodes, there are *unofficial* fan-created reconstructions which are theoretically illegal. In other words, Doctor Who from 1963 to 1969 presents itself to the modern viewer as a fearsome patchwork of episodes in different formats and levels of availability.
Besides "An Unearthly Child" and "Rose," there are many other possible starting points. Some of these include:
S7:E1 "Spearhead from Space" from 1970. From this point onwards, every Doctor Who episode exists and is available on streaming. Much like "Ruby Road," "Spearhead" continues the ongoing story of Doctor Who as it was at that time but is a good starting point for new viewers, with the show taking a moment to regroup with a new Doctor. This era also has strong narrative links to the Gatwa era.
S12:E1 "Robot" from 1974. This is the first episode with one of the most popular Doctors. It picks up directly from the end of the previous episode and would be a hopelessly confusing starting point for viewers completely unfamiliar with Doctor Who; however, I think that Gatwa's first season gives you enough background knowledge to follow the story. Another possibility which would be simpler for totally new viewers is "The Ark in Space," the story arc following "Robot" in Season 12.
S24:E1 "Time and the Rani" from 1987. This was the first Doctor Who story I ever saw. It would be a hugely controversial choice because, in itself, it is one of the worst Doctor Who stories ever made. However, it begins the highly underrated and appealing final era of the original show, which, once again, has notable narrative linkages to the Gatwa era.
S5:E1 "The Eleventh Hour" from 2010. (The season numbers had rebooted in 2005.) The debut of a very popular era of the show, which should be easy to follow with your knowledge of the Gatwa era. On the downside, however, the last three episodes before "Ruby Road" rely heavily for their emotional impact on events earlier than this.
S10:E1 "The Pilot" from 2017. As the episode title suggests, this episode was intended as a "soft reboot" within the ongoing series. Starting from this point, there are only 39 episodes before looping back around to "Ruby Road".
S11:E1 "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" from 2018. The start of another new era with a new Doctor, with only 27 episodes to go before "Ruby Road." This would also be a controversial choice because the 2018-2022 era is wildly unpopular among fans. Also, the issue with starting with "The Eleventh Hour" applies to "The Pilot" and "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" as well.
On balance, the best choice remains 2005's "Rose," but I wanted to give you some information about alternate choices as well. I can't wait for your future Who videos, Ugo!

I found your reactions recently, being a Doctor Who fan. Now I'm subbing to see you watch more! Yes please, start with the 2005 series with "Rose". Forgive the early 2000's tv budget, but you'll love the stories.
I wanna say, it's been very interesting seeing your reactions as a new viewer. And the joy of discovering this hint at what Doctor Who is. This season has its flaws. I can nitpick on some things. But seeing your fresh take without knowing what came before has been really nice. I do agree that the whimsical and mysterious vibe was just right. That's what makes me come back and I'm happy to see it again. The last few seasons of the previous Doctor Who series had lost a bit of the magic for me. (S11-14 are what I mean. Everything before that I absolutely recommend watching. It will change your life.) But even feeling a bit weary, watching this season has a spark. Got me excited for season 2 in hopes it grows even better again.
Oh and don't forget the Christmas specials /other specials between each season. I made that mistake on a first watch. It's confusing when you miss them

Agreed on the pointing thing. Point of contention with me. How would the clergymen have known that's what her name should be? They didn't see her point. She was definitely pointing either at the Doctor or the Tardis or Sutekh on the Tardis. And that pointing hand was NOT one of a 15yo, so it wasn't mum dropping her off.

I absolutely loved this season and this 2 part finale. It's been great seeing you introduced to Doctor Who. If I were you I would start at New Who -- Christopher Eccleston's first episode, called "Rose". That will give you years of seasons and Doctors and adventures. Well, they're all the same Doctor, but also they're very very different. But at heart, they are all The Doctor. After you get caught up from there, go back to the beginning with William Hartnell, the first Doctor we were introduced to -- Susan's grandfather. Have fun! I can't wait to take the journey with you.

Thank yo for all your fantastic reactions. Can't wait to see another deep dive.
As for checking out the rest of NuWho I can see three ways to approach it. 1. start in 2005 with the fisr episode ofthe 9th doctor. 2. check out who the doctors were before 15, pick the one that appeals to you most and start with his or her first episode, then watch their season(s) and pisck the next one. 3 Watch the Top rated / fa favorite episode for every doctor (there is some aregment about which those are, but you'll find some).
I personally find the classics much harder to approach and not all of them still exists since there was some time when the BBC didn't take care of their archives and much was destroyed. Afaik those are mostly episodes with the 2nd doctor.
Generally though, you can start with any season of any doctor and will get the hang of it eventually. Then you can always go back to before. We all have our favorite doctors and showrunner and writers, so as someones else suggested: go in with an open mind and see which one you like. I personally find great, bad and in-between episodes in every season so there is none I hated overall. Most importantly: Enjoy the ride.

My first doctor was in the nuwho… with the 9th doctor. I would recommend starting there. After watching all up to current I went back to classic who. Classic who took me 10-11 months of binge watching hardcore. I barely remember what I watched. There is soooo much. Plus there are a few things that don’t really exist anymore. Something about a fire 😢. It was so much that I really didn’t take it all in. But at least I have a firmer understanding. Also there are Christmas specials each year. So those are identified as dr who specials.

i think 2005 series 1 with the 9th doctor is the best way to expand from here, particularly for newcomers its a great jumping on point. after catching up on 2005+, it's not a bad idea to visit the classic era 1963+ to expand, but the classic era unfortunately quite a few stories were lost, partially lost and/or something else. I love all eras of doctor who but to introduce it to anyone i always go with 2005+. but it was actually really awesome to witness you discover this show from the new season 1

The best option to start is series 1 (2005) - the CGI budget was 5 cents per episode those days so the GCI will not look good, but just think of it as those episodes having quirky visuals lol. The very first episode is kinda silly (like how space babies was kinda silly) but if you stick with it you'll love it

  • @Stephen-Fox
    @Stephen-Fox 7 місяців тому

It has been a pleasure watching your reactions to this daft little show.
There are two real ways of diving into the stuff prior to the current series:
    1) Jump back to the start of a previous era (most people are suggesting starting in 2005 with Rose, though that's still a commitment to 13 seasons of television plus a bunch of specials while catching back up with what you've just watched - I'd argue 2010 with The Elventh Hour and 2018 with The Woman Who Fell to Earth in 2018 are equally valid starting points - They all have new showrunners, new Doctors, new companions, written to work as jumping on points for people who have never seen the show before. Classic Who rarely has as clean an entry point). Some eras will be more to your taste than others. This is normal. The show reinvents itself every few seasons, it's the only way a show can last for 61 years and counting (Give or take a 16 year gap between 1989 and 2005, minus a single feature-length episode in 1996). Whichever you do, be sure to jump back to the present for the Christmas 2024 special.
    2) Sample it. Most seasons of the show are largely standalone stories - Now that you know the premise you'd have been able to follow what was going on in e.g. Rogue if that was the only episode of the season you'd seen. Most are like that. This was even more true prior to 2005. Pick a generally well-regarded story from each Doctor, and watch them. Doesn't matter what order, though you probably don't want to go either chronological or reverse chronological because the pacing (and special effects) of 1963-1989 Doctor Who is... A lot to adjust to for people used to modern television. Then if there was an interpretation - or more - of the character you particularly liked, sample some more from that Doctor. This is the approach I generally recommend to people who catch up with the present from whenever they started, but with you starting out in the present 1) also becomes viable, depending on how much television you want to commit to. My personal suggestions? The Time Meddler (1st Doctor); Tomb of the Cybermen (2nd Doctor, though this might be fan bias due to how long it wasn't available in the archives); The Daemons (3rd Doctor); The City of Death (4th Doctor); Caves of Androzani (5th Doctor); The Two Doctors (6th Doctor); Survival (7th Doctor); The Enemy Within (8th Doctor); Dalek (9th Doctor); Midnight (10th Doctor); Vincent and the Doctor (11th Doctor); Oxygen (12th Doctor); It Takes You Away (13th Doctor); Wild Blue Yonder (14th Doctor. Who is played by the same actor as the 10th Doctor but I'm including for completeness). Other opinions for 'if you're watching one single episode from this Doctor watch this one' are available - And I struggled with some of these). For those of us who got into Who during the 90s while it wasn't on air, this is the natural way to start watching the show, either via VHS tapes or novelizations.
Trying to watch every episode that still survives is a commitment to those who aren't already heavily invested - I think some reaction channels that started doing Classic Who in chronological order are still making their way through it five years later - Having just looked it up I believe something like 16 days 18 hours and 42 minutes of Doctor Who exist, assuming you skipped the material not present in the archives rather than looking up the various restorations of them. While that's something you might decide to do at some point down the road, many people have, some of them reaction channels, I seriously wouldn't start out by doing that.

Of you want to learn a bit about Doctor Who I'd suggest the very first " An unearthly child" , shown two weeks running because viewers were distracted by the JFK assassination in 1963 . It will give you an impression of how it started and is so loved by viewers over the years . The Lore of the series has developed over that time and there are a lot of rules the writers have to consider . You might also try ' An adventure in space and time" which is a tv movie about it's origins and explains a bit . I enjoyed your reaction .

If you are doing more rewatches, it's probably easiest for you to start at the 2005 era with Christopher Eccleston. That was Russell T Davies first time as show runner and it was honestly an easier jumping on point for new fans than the Disney era. Sort of wades you gently into the lore of the universe and stuff because he had way more time to do it instead of being confined to 8 episodes or so. The classic series is fantastic, but extremely hard to watch in the US, especially as a completionist. Large swathes of the first two doctors' eras are unavailable in the US, but even in the UK a lot of the serials that are available are incomplete due to wacky old BBC policies. Anyways, just do Max for the first reboot series, it's very watchable, will make you more of a fan and then you can take that energy into a much more difficult tour through the classic era. Whatever you end up doing, I'm sure it will be great though! Thanks for watching my favorite show.

Nothing wrong with classic who, but I recommend starting in 2005 with the Doctor as Christopher Eccleston. First episode is called “Rose”. Also, if you have any mods who help you out (or an editor) they can probably help you arrange how to watch it all, because there are mini-episodes and Christmas specials and spin off shows and all kinds of stuff (depending on how deep off into it you want to get) and someone who’s helping you could work with you to arrange it all into a good watch order and such.

Of course the lady was important, she helped! With how much this season has revolved around perception and the idea of memory=time, the whole point is that we have no idea who she was, neither does the Doctor, and we're not supposed to know either. Also, Doc has killed people plenty of times, so I find it more appropriate to think of his speech as being about carrying Sutekh through all of time and space not once but TWICE, quite literally bringing death everywhere. That should be more in character too

Like, the first episode "an unearthly child" back in 1963 featuring Susan, or even pyramids of mars on season 13 (1975) featuring suthek. You just need to keep in mind that the pacing and special effects were really different (sometimes bad, but we love it 😂) back then, and you might take a moment to get used to it.

Not sure if you read comments on some older episodes like this - but in general it's good you went back into the 2005 series. Personally it will be good to catch up from there and to potentially watch new episodes when they come next year, simultaneously.
There was also a chance you should have started with the old Who - but especially the oldest episodes are sometimes hard to find and commonly really lengthy to watch (some stories back then were released as long 4 parts episodes that really dragged with a filler content). And some are kinda boring by modern standards (like it is old TV after all). And I'm not sure if they would even do good on YT.
It's good to go for 2005, because it also references the old times and it's much palatable to watch. And you can slowly watch some iconic old Who episodes from time to time to learn more about the past, at the same time having the action go fast with the nuWho. Especially as you get a new reference to the old times - sometimes it's worth watching the original episode when a specific character or a villain is shown.
Comment section probably will recommend you all the fun episodes every now and then, and personally - when it comes to old Who - I would go for it, instead of potentially waiting for the time where you are finished with nuWho and newest Who and starting once again from episode 1 of the old Who. There are some stories and Doctors worth watching in order, but show also has been really episodical sometimes, so it's not a big issue to jump around through those 40+ years of old Who.
I wouldn't skip anything in the nuWho though, even if episodes are bad - it kinda let's you appreciate some other episodes. Especially as some of the "bad episodes" actually sometimes have a second side to them. And everyone also Hs different tastes and sensibilities. One person's trash may be other person's treasure.

so I think there's three entry points into the nuwho from 2005-2023 and it is every time a new showrunner takes over: s1, straight to the beginning, s5 which is (edit: mostly, just realised that one character might be confusing at first) seperate from the previous 4 seasons because steven moffat took over and season 11 which is where chris chibnall took over. I'd advise going back to s1 to get the full picture but in the end it's completely up to you if you can take in such a long running show into your schedule.

A very enjoyable watch, and your enthusiasm is wonderful!
As for where to start with watching Who... While everyone's suggestions are very good, my own take would be that you could do worse than just start anywhere at all. Pick a random episode from any of the show's 60 years. It'll be self-contained and fun. Then watch another one from a few years earlier or later, and skip around. The show keeps changing and there's no such thing as a definitive canon over the many years. It's not a programme that demands viewers watch it in order (although perhaps each season of the 2005 - present version has its own arc, as you appear to appreciate that kind of year-long story).
But if there's a must-see episode, I'd nominate the very first one, An Unearthly Child. It's only 25 minutes, but good luck finding it!
