Hey all! I have finally created a lesson video for “Hymn to Freedom”! Link is here, thank you! ua-cam.com/video/QXI-z1dkrmk/v-deo.htmlsi=mtANqpppfMqZD0-6
so maybe i'm 6 years late but just found this and i love this so much! inspired me to get back into piano after having ignored it for a year, haha. Amazing cover, man.
Wow this freedom feels like is coming tomorrow morning and save the entire world, the poorest of the poor, women and children. Thami Msubo, Richards Bay South Africa
also have to pile on, been listening to this for years and it's the best rendition on youtube. the way you close it out is food for the soul. OP3 would be so, so proud.
.........................Speechless! I am so glad this finally showed up in my UA-cam feed. It reminds me of "Nobody Knows You", which I've been playing for years but it goes so much deeper. Thanks, Adam.
OMG you are amazing!! Respecting Peterson, adding jazz, even bits of other songs, tying it all together effortlessly into one performance. This is my favourite take on a favourite song. So very glad you shared!
Hi all! I'm looking to put together some tutorial videos for my version of "Hymn to Freedom" and maybe some generalized lessons as a whole. If you have any input of what you might like to see, please feel free to reply to this below!
Absolutely magnificent performance. The only flaw I can find is the sound of a Kawai piano. Every one I have ever heard has the same tone in the bass. It is like the sounding board is too thin to give the resonance to the notes. This is something I have noticed in modern pianos from several makers. I would LOVE to hear you playing this on a good piano from a century ago. A Steinway and Sons, a Bechstein, or a Gerard Heintzman (pre 1932, Canadian piano maker) would be amazing to hear.
Talent=work and tears and more work. No such thing as talent only a predisposition and personality type that drives an individual in a certain direction. Talent is a cop-out word that normies use because they are unaware of the arts and the extreme dedication and obsession required to provide anything of value. But yes he's talented 👏
Hi Carol! Apologies for the delayed response: absolutely considering this one for the next album. Keep an eye out for that this year! Thanks again for listening!
I wish I did! This performance was all improvised; I have had other requests for lessons regarding some of the licks I'm doing here and I'll certainly consider that moving forward. Really glad to hear your interest, though!
Actually, yes! A fellow youtuber, Pablo Enver, transcribed this performance and you can purchase it from them here: ua-cam.com/video/LXLq3lh9-3w/v-deo.html. Also, be on the lookout: I'm planning on recording some videos and lessons about Hymn to Freedom and other songs. Stay tuned!
Hi - so glad you liked the video! At the moment, I don't have sheet music for this as this was an improvised performance. If I end up making a lesson video/somehow get this notated eventually I will certainly let you know! :)
Hey there! Glad you enjoyed - I didn't do any mastering for this, I just kind of tossed the video together with camera audio back when I filmed it haha. That's probably the explanation!
NarimatsuMusic Nice. Just listening to your album on Spotify now and its awesome. Just starting to get into jazz piano after 7 years of playing - this is great inspiration
I really appreciate you checking out the album - so glad you're enjoying it! :) Awesome to hear you're getting into jazz; you will certainly not regret it. Feel free to check out my site adamnarimatsu.com for more videos/gig dates!
Hi Charlie! This was an improvised performance, and, unfortunately, I am not very adept at reading/writing notation. If there is anybody out there that can do it I would love to see it myself!
Hey! So I'm sure you've seen from the other comments, but unfortunately this was both and improvised performance and I'm not very good at notating/transcribing :(. But I am definitely considering making a video in the future with things I do when I play the tune. Let me know if that would be of interest to you!
This is really good! Can't wait to see more from you! I just made a cover of Oscar peterson's "Blues of the prairies" and would really appreciate if you had a look at it. ua-cam.com/video/5y1Hj-kViA0/v-deo.htmla
Dixie, or any piece of music or art, should not be judged outside its original context. Youre an artist, wokeness is just another fab passing by….no need to apologize.
This is beautiful man. Wonderful, stellar playing. I would like to say though-the apology in the description is not warranted at all, Dixie is a just a Southern folk song and has got nothing to do with race. Contrary to popular and errant belief there are millions of southerners (white AND black) who are proud of their heritage and culture. Idk if someone told you to be sorry, but don't just write off an entire area and demographic of people as bad just because someone may have said so somewhere along the line. Isn't that what leads to things like discrimination?
Hi Will - thanks so much for this comment. Very glad that you enjoyed the playing. I appreciate the sentiment you laid out here. My main concern is that "Dixie" is inherently intertwined with the Confederacy and White identity during the Civil War. My apology was not meant to disregard or dispel the culture of the Southern US as a whole; I fully understood the South has a lot of wonderful people and rich cultural traditions that are important to many. However, I don't think that means that we can ignore the contextual implication of some of these. Seeing as "Dixie" was used as the de facto anthem for the portion of the country that was seceding in order to preserve slavery, I felt my accidental inclusion of it while performing a piece explicitly in support of the Civil Rights Movement warranted explanation. I hope that makes sense! Thank you again for the kind words and for sharing your experience. Hope you're staying safe and healthy!
So dumb to bring race into anything at all. People are people and we should judge everyone as individuals. How can anyone live a happy life constantly being the world police of whats proper? Keep your damn racist accusations out of my sight. I can't believe some cuckold SJW would listen to a piece of music and complain about or interpret it as offensive. Brainwashed idiot.
Good attempt at copying the great Oscar Peterson. Very clean playing. Technically sound. You are very good at your craft. Many will appreciate it. Good job.
Hi! You play very, very well, but I must say that your interpretation of Hymn to Freedom is lacking most of what makes Peterson's play so unique. The very beginning of his play sounds like he indeed is playing a hymn, and less a piece of jazz music. His play has at times a softness where yours is more constant. That said, please, by all means, keep playing!
Hey all! I have finally created a lesson video for “Hymn to Freedom”! Link is here, thank you! ua-cam.com/video/QXI-z1dkrmk/v-deo.htmlsi=mtANqpppfMqZD0-6
J can listen to this version over and over again. Adam's one of my favorite pianists.
Thanks so much Carol!
Sounding great man. Subscribed :)

Excellent transcription, is possible to find the score anywhere?
Actually, yes! A fellow youtuber, Pablo Enver, transcribed this performance and you can purchase it from them here: ua-cam.com/video/LXLq3lh9-3w/v-deo.html. Also, be on the lookout: I'm planning on recording some videos and lessons about Hymn to Freedom and other songs. Stay tuned!
It's like a quarterback on a college football team decided to give up all the gals and glory and focus on music. True statement...nobody can argue.
My favorite rendition! Does anyone know where to find sheet music for this?
Hi - so glad you liked the video! At the moment, I don't have sheet music for this as this was an improvised performance. If I end up making a lesson video/somehow get this notated eventually I will certainly let you know! :)
@@NarimatsuMusic please do that, spread this masterpiece to others to play it!
Cool !
100% bravo for the playing!!!
This Kawai seems a bit too dark, is it really, or this is just a mastering thing?
Hey there! Glad you enjoyed - I didn't do any mastering for this, I just kind of tossed the video together with camera audio back when I filmed it haha. That's probably the explanation!
Do you happen to have sheet music for this? I just have to learn the way you played it.
Wait no more, friend. Here's a transcription

Awesome Adam! We def have to collab soon!
Thanks!
Hey, what kind of kawai grand piano is this? Thanks!
Hi.
This sound great!
In which model of kawai are you playing?
Thank you! Off the top of my head I'm not sure what the model is, but I'll be practicing there again soon and I'll let you know.
Wow. Lovely arrangement. You have any sheets of this?
Thank you! This was actually improvised - I'm not the best at reading sheets.

Wow, thank you so much! I'm sure your rendition is sounding great!
Pure filth - I LIVE for this kind of stuff!! Thank you for sharing!!
Amazing! How long have you been playing piano?
+WASTELANDJESUS Thank you! I started around freshman year of high school, so since around 2009.
Chill re: Dixie! It is totally appropriate to start the Hymn with that reminder of WHY Peterson wrote this song in the first place imo.
Can i book you?
You don't potentially have a transcription of your fantastic arrangement?
Hi Charlie! This was an improvised performance, and, unfortunately, I am not very adept at reading/writing notation. If there is anybody out there that can do it I would love to see it myself!

My son said you sound like Vince Guaraldi. I told him Vince Guaraldi was never this good. And he's my favorite pianist.
Wow, thank you so much for the amazing compliment! Vince Guaraldi is a personal hero, I'm always striving to sound a little more like him. :)
I bet Mr. Peterson would have loved it...
Thank you! That really means a lot to hear.
I see we lost a few mins at the beginning… good stuff.

Sorry you feel that way! Appreciate the feedback; always trying to get better. Thanks for watching!
This word 'cover' is a 'pop' expression and has no place in repect of a jazz performance. Who sould say that about 'When the saints go marching in'.
ok
PLEEZZZZ!! Easy to "imitate".......the secret is to "originate". Listen to the original....not the COPY!!
