Thank you Dr. Chopra... I just wanted you to know that my understanding of my True~Self began when i started reading your book on the 7 Spiritual~Law~of Success. It took me 4 years of reading the same book in many different settings but I fail to grasp the true meaning. One day, My wife got mad at me and made a rip in my book through anger. I then got really upset and... Out of anger, took the book into my favorite part of the wood and start reading the book from the ripped page. Out of surprised, I then truly understood the book and its true meaning... Until today, while writing this important reminder of mine, I just now realized that I should thank her for getting mad at me for taking so long to understand something of such importance... Thanks again for sharing such Wonderful knowledge, I now wanted to dedicate myself to the learning and sharing what I've learned to bring value to society and its people... That is, I what I truly believe is my True~Duty in life. ;-) :-) Truly, Richard Phi Pham
How simply brilliant! I never thought of dividing my day like this. Sure beats spinning my wheels doing 20 things at once and accomplishing very little!
We're so glad you found our channel, especially given what you've been going through. Welcome! And thank you for your question. As Deepak wrote, "In Eastern thought, detachment is a state that doesn't condemn desire or give in to it, either." Being in a state of detachment means you are free from the anxiety and suffering that goes along with living entirely by the ego's impulses.
It can definitely be challenging to stick to a schedule and overcome obstacles like procrastination. Like you said, it may help to start the day with a short meditation, just to get your mind centered. And whenever you feel stuck try taking a few deep breaths or walking around the block to clear your mind. Hope that helps!
Meditation may help you acquire more focus in your life and ground you. Try to eliminate those things that distract you easily and take you away from the present. Schedule your time and work to do those tasks well, mindfully, and with focus!
It's perfect. Thank you so much for making videos and helping everyone looking for help. I've been reading you for about 13 or 14 years now, and I just love you. Namaste Baba.
This is exactly what I think to do in my head! Happy to see some sort of validation. Though, I ain't able to align my thoughts to my actions every time; the times I do, it feels good.
I'm on track in the morning but I own a restaurant and the ups and downs between the ebb and flow of business and employee drama can dramatically change my day as much as I breath and try not to let it get to me. I do make sure to spend time with my son in the evenings and have a mindful dinner
@gagzy1989 I can relate exactly to your situation. I'm Asian guy living in the USA, grew up here all my life...when I told my Dad.I was going to be a hairstylist he didnt understand and wasnt happy.....but now.realizes I had to live my life's desires.....as long as you can support yourself they should be happy :)
Thank you for your comment! And great question - we will pass it along to Deepak. Meditation plays a vital role in quieting the mind, so this may be a good place to start.
Disciplined time management makes too much sense, but this schedule made me anxious. What if you can't get stuff done in time to take a break for lunch? When do you clean or pay bills? I've scheduled out my day as such and have yet to follow the schedule, but I'll consider your tactics again. Thanks.
I love this! It is so hard for me to do just one thing and I am completely disorganized and always overwhelmed. I am going to do what Deepak says for a week and see if it works for me. Thank you for sharing!
I have strong compassion for this Earth and the life that inhabits it. I follow current events on this subject and it seems that all there is is destruction. I feel overwhelmed by the pain and destruction brought onto this earth by humans. How do I not become overwhelmed and dwell in the bad?
WOW! HELLO THERE'S MR.DEEPAK CHOPRA MY NAME'S KANG FROM CALIFORNIA I HIGHLY RESPECT YOU BECAUSE I REALLY REALLY HAVE LOOKED INTO YOUR VIDEOS ON HERE, ON UA-cam N I WANT TO CHANGE MY LIFE, AS A WHOLE I WISH THAT I COULD HAVE A LIFE LIKE YOURSELF..AS FAR AS YOUR LIFE GO'S INSPIRING N I LIKE YOUR BOOK'S VERY MUCH TOO
I think this is an excellent start to get back on track,. Especially coming out of deep depression. During that time we are so into our sorrowful thoughts, that we don't appreciate or care about what's in the moment. Thank you, Dr.Chopra. I'm not sure what is meant by the stay detached statement..I always thought detachment was a bad thing...Please explain
Congratulations on discovering your inner artist! In terms of finding balance, perhaps try setting some intentions for things you'd like to accomplish or ways you'd like to grow as an artist in the coming months/years. Then see if you can identify certain practices that will aid you in that intention, and, following Deepak's advice in this video, start breaking up your time into segments to work on these individual practices. Hope that helps!
I love this. I behave like a mad thing at work, because I have little choice if I'm to get through my workload. I intend to make 2013 a year of changes, so I'm thrilled to have found you again Deepak.. in November of 2012. Just in time. :0)
I am an artist I have just recently embraced this fact about my self and Am now starting on my path of truth and purpose. I am also 25' the edges or youth and maturity surround both sides or my heart and mind, bringing me to a type of quantum quarry if you will.as an artist how is just beginning to open my eye(s) I am seeking free expression of self, yet as a 25 yr old man I feel I need to construct more stability and routine like you spoke of above. My question who to balance these things?
I LOVE your advice but the thing is I get distracted "EASILY" and then everything I was planning to do goes to waste and then I get stressed and yeah this is my life!! any advice please?
Great video Deepak...too many people are hearing the message that it's better to do two things at once (like the recent iPhone commercial), but we know the brain can't do more than one thing at a time without compromises and added stress. Getting into a rhythm has become habit for me, but I need to keep working on the detached part. XO
I like the idea Deepak, but I didnt hear you mention cleaning the house, or paying your bills, or looking after children, which I find take up most of my day, including work, I would never be able to get to bed by 10 if I walked 10 miles a day, or meditated for an hour! I feel that most of us dont have the luxury of such pursuits on a daily basis, especially if we are single parents who work and have to maintain our homes etc. What advice would you give if you were in such a life!
I hear you. With the children and their many activities, laundry, cooking, groceries, errands plus all the other things I wish I had time for, I'd easily need at least a 28 hr day!
I agree. I am also a working mom, and what I've come to understand is that the really important work that our foremothers did as "stay at home moms" was really and truly a whole entire job, as is caring for children. Upper middle class households manage this by hiring outside help to help clean the house etc., they send the children to daycare/preschool/school and/or have nannies to help out and so on. What you have totally put your finger on is the fact that we are all attempting to do something that is well and truly impossible. we are working 3 and 4 jobs, once you realize that being a caregiver is a full time job and being a housekeeper is also a full time job. and making matters even more difficult is the modern culture which makes parents responsible for this constant attention and care, whereas even in my father's generation kids just went outside and played with other children in teh neighborhood all day. they weren't even home, and they had no adult supervision. now, though, if you let your 9 year old go to the playground alone, you may get reported to the police for neglect.
I think that ideally the life that Deepak describes would be beneficial for us all and it is our culture and inequalities that doesn’t allow the exact version described. However these practices are beneficial and can be achieved at least in some small measure by us all. Cleaning the house and paying the bills can be done in a way so that you remain present and can be seen as a kind of meditation. Meditation doesn’t have to be sitting cross legged in silence with the sound of distant waves it can be movement awareness and taking full notice of what you are interacting with even if it seems prosaic. Exercise can be cleaning and walking the stairs rather than the lift. There are many versions of lives and the principles can be pursued in different ways.
I really believe that if I change in a spiritual way, then the other changes I long to make will happen as a consequence? This year I want to start my own business .. I'd love to help my family. My poor man is worn out, and I'm really tired of seeing my loved one's struggle. I'm knocking on a bit..but I;ve never felt so ready. I read my five pages a day, and understand more and more. Thank you:0)
It tends to determine a list of priorities when you are facing a need for making something new or planning an appointment and then you choose for it the one activity you need less.
Dr.Chopra, something has been stopping me from asking you this, but now the time is right. I'm an asian 24yr old girl in the UK, full of ambition and desire, which has been repressed due to my parent's traditional thinking patterns. I do not have it in me to hurt them to live life as I want to,but I am slowly dying inside each day as I am not being emotionally nourished by doing what I love. I have fallen into a trap of quitting dreaming a life for myself; I know this is wrong. What do I do?
We all (I especially) require reminders about only doing one thing at a time, while being fully present. I read this @ Meditation center this morning (seems to be my theme today): "Perform work punctually, w/ serenity, courage, zeal, love, strength, & pure mind. W/ concentration, contentment, & discipline, w/ great joy & ease, perform all your daily Seva. Still your mind, have no fear. Never invite anger. Perform all allotted tasks to please the Lord." Deepak, what about the Gunas: no passion?
Deepak you said you have dinner at 6 PM what do you usually do the rest of the evening until 10 PM? Thank you for the video. Is it sitll your routine almost 5 years later?
Did I hear you right? You walk between 5 and 10 miles a day? Holy Cow! That would be it for me for the day. At a fast pace that is easily between 1 1/2 and 3 hours a day all by itself. I know I would never have that type of discipline. You also left out a lot of other things like cooking, housework, food shopping, taking care of kids, etc. Sometimes there just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day. I think I have struck a decent balance and definitely can find more time to walk and meditate but until such time as I am retired and/or have a lot of money I don't have this type of luxury. I am not willing to be up at 4am to accomplish all of this. I go to sleep between 10pm and 11pm and still find getting up between 6 and 7am difficult. But I love listening to you and Oprah and I do manage to fit in your daily meditations. It is a start.
u should try eating a good substantial breakfast such as 5 bananas or oatmeal and strawberries, it's the most important meal for the day. Great effective day plan btw :)
Well.. maybe you could remind her that if you're doing something and she's telling you how bad you are at multi tasking, then doing whatever it is and listening to her at the same time is multi tasking. Take heart.:0)
Hi Deepak...I have been trying to implement this strategy for many years now. But as a single mother it has become impossible because "my time" does not simply belong to just me (and my funds are limited in my soliciting help with the many things I need to do). I now have my 10 yr old meditate with me in the evening before HIS bedtime so I can get to it as well. Any other overall suggestions for someone in my shoes?
We actually have a great parenting show coming out in February which will address a lot of these issues - so stay tuned! That's wonderful to hear you've started meditating with your 10 year old; it is such an invaluable practice to incorporate into family life!
Sounds like a wonderful plan, but I am a little confused. Where do you fit in the 5-10 miles of walking per day, which would take 2 - 3.5 hours? Since you go to bed at 10PM and sleep 8 hours, you must not have started your meditation until 6AM, finishing about 7:30AM. Then go the gym return and you from 9AM-12 noon and take lunch. Your afternoon and evening schedule mention nothing about walking except a 20 minute stroll after lunch. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

I think what you said is very true, very spot on. And I'm going to try it.

"Do one thing, do it mindfully and do it well" - if only my wife would agree! She's always telling me how poor I am at multi-tasking!
I am curious as to how you fit 1 1/2 hrs of meditation, go to the gym and also walk 5 to 10 miles from 6 - 9 am (assuming you wake up at 6 am)!
Agreed though we forgot that children can always joining us or be around atleast
thnks! :)
brilliant.
the brain can only do one thing at a time, and do it well
purse excellent, ignore success , stay detached
