I have always been a monarchist... but in our sick world of ever increasing nihilism... it is a great thing to be able to hold onto something with rich meaning, sanctity and stability.
I watch this every year on TV and have done since I was a child, I'm now 68 yo. My heart bursts with pride when I see our Disciplined armed forces perform this Royal Pageantry. God Save the King.
This parade was taken by the then Prince of Wales, now Charles III, standing in for his mother. The 2022 Parade was the only one his mother missed since her first one as Queen in 1952 but she stood in for her ailing father, George VI, in 1951, so that offset 2022. She also missed 1955 but that was because a rail strike resulted in the whole thing being cancelled. She used to look splendid in Guards' uniform sitting side-saddle on her black charger, Burmese, gifted by the Canadian Mounties.
Who was the Royal on the right of King Charles ? I know Princess Anne was on his left. It can't have been Andrew ! & Has Edward got a regiment?
@@lyndarichardson4744 Duke of Cambridge, now Prince of Wales.
I was on this troop, number 6 guard, 7 company coldstream guards.
I love how Princess Anne is up front in her uniform and on horseback .
In the olden days Princesses just sat in their carriages and looked decorative 🙂
Something many people overlook, is how hard it is to stay in the present arms position for a length of time. When you're waiting for that retire, it's the longest time of your life.
TTC is rehearsed so vigorously, you'll never mess up. But holding that position especially on a hot day is gruesome. Hope you enjoy more guards content! I'm coldstream and I love watching people from across the pond's reactions to guards co.
Happy Christmas and New year everyone
Bang on mate, done three myself enjoyed the day but the six weeks training used to do me in.
@Swifty thank you and I will for sure. It looks very difficult
@@grahammcghee4754 it kills you off but when it becomes routine it's just another day. Annoying when people jack up the timings half way through and you've got to start again 😂
@@MarkfromtheStates good man. Liking the content, new to the channel but I'm enjoying it! It's hard to a degree. I used to dread doing it live just incase I was 'that guy'. But it's not so bad. You practice so much it's muscle memory. Hardest part is the standing still. Genuinely
@@swiftyblueredblue715 aye had a RSM who thought it would be a good idea to slow the timing down it was like one, two, three, four, one 😅 but thought it looked ok on the day.
And this is how the extended line, arrowhead and spearhead formations looked two hundred years ago. Imagine this ten fold marching towards you in 1815...scary stuff, especially as the band was probably playing then too!
my Father was in the Welsh Guards and we never missed watching this every year with his non stop commentary, I still watch it every year 67 now but now unfortunately not with my Father.
@Paul K I would like to think he is still there watching with you... Best wishes
You’ll notice that as each company comes up to the Saluting Dias the music changes, the change is to the correct regimental slow or quick march
Mark. I’ve watched this on TV dozens of times. It’s always shown on TV on a Saturday near to the Sovereigns official birthday (usually the coronation). When next years date is I don’t know yet. Great display of the Foot Guards of the British Army in full ceremonial uniform.
In Wikipedia under “Foot Guards” and “United Kingdom” is a good list of the regiments that shows the Headdress Plume position and colour, tunic Button grouping, collar & shoulder badge and officer pips.
These items show you one regiment from another.
The point of the parade is to display the Regimental Colour to the troops. This dates back to the days when it was vital for soldiers on the battlefield to recognise the regimental banner. These "Colours" are still a source of immense pride to a regiment, because they display the "Battle Honours", scrolls on the flags given the names of actions, may be hundreds of years ago, in which the Regiment particularly distinguished itself.
It is not surprising that Princess Anne was there, mounted. Do you realise she's an Olympic-level horsewoman? (As is her daughter, Zara Tindall.)
Seen trooping the colour a couple of times whilst in the RN.....good to watch.
Looks amazing
Grenadier Guards = 1 Button, white plume, Grenade collar badge. Coldstream Guards = 2 buttons, red plume, Garter Star collar badge. Scots Guards = 3 buttons, no plume (they always fought in the centre of the line), Thistle collar badge. Irish Guards = 4 buttons, blue plume, Shamrock collar badge. Welsh Guards = 5 buttons, white, green, white plume, Leek collar badge.
Been watching this, firstly with my Mum in the 1950’s Never to be missed. So proud to be British - makes me cry now🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇦
The camera lingered on Boris for way too long. The man is despised. What a fabulous display of everything that is great about my country, proud doesn't come close to covering it.
The mounted troops follow after and the Kings troop with the guns.
The last in the line shouts right sir so the officer knows when to move off.
Irish Guards trooping that's why Irish tunes played. 🙂
Hope yr over yr cold soon best wishes from the UK
Thank you CathyB. I'm all good now
Should add its the Irish Guards colour but they are also joined by other regiments so you would notice that the band changes the tune when a particular reg march past to their regiments one
The five Regiments of Foot Guards take turns to do the Birthday Parade ( aka Trooping The Colour ) but it depends on operational commitments, so some regiments have quite a wait to take their turn again. The Scots Guards, for example, trooped their former 2nd Battalion's Colour at Windsor Castle ( because of covid ) last year, and prior to that in 2011.
Hi Mark, sounding a bit healthier than you were! The gold bars/bands on the Colours are the battle honours they've been awarded. Btw, this isn't even half of it, you can see the mounted band, the two Household Cavalry units, and the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery lined up on Horse Guards Rd. The mounted band will replace the Foot Guards Band, and will play while the Cavalry and the Kings Troop will slow and quick time past the dais. The whole event takes around 90minutes.
@Nick awesome
@@MarkfromtheStates Because the Colours carry the regiment's main battle honours (or 'honors' where you are), they are sacred, which is why you will see officers salute and civilians nod their head as they pass by the Colours.
@@johnfernleigh1352 oh ok very nice
The Mounted Troops are great to see
I was at Trooping the Colour in 1967 as my Husband was Trooping, back then he was my fiancee 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guard's and our youngest Son followed his Dad into the Coldstream Guard's,1st Battalion as 2nd had been disbanded our eldest joined the 3rd Parachute Regiment.
Love this. Thanks Angela
Always loved the Trooping. Like watching living history - Waterloo or Salamanca when entire armies fought in similar formations and dress! Spectacular. I personally like the actual "trooping the colour through the ranks" part, since it is the bit that means the most. I have been a spectator more than once. Kings Troop RHA are a good watch - saw their "musical ride" when they still have the Royal Tournament at Earls Court. Another one worth seeing is the Light Infantry, "doing the double" - which did once here at Horseguards.
Thank you Ian
Brandy and honey, always works for me when I have a heavy cold. I hope you're better soon.
@Annemarie I'm all good now thank you
i have to say,the 2 troops and over 100 queens guards
i done, were defo the highlight of my military career in the guards.there is nothing like it.also doing charles and diana ,s wedding was special
Oh wow what a cool moment that must of been
@@MarkfromtheStates it was mate,i have met king charles afew times as he was our colonel of the regiment as prince of wales
I think someone mentions the Kings Troop at Trooping the Colour. I suggest you have a watch as that is very impressive as well 🙂 Get better soon x
18:37 Irish guards march past, recruited from Northern Ireland!
Chuck some coal on't fire as we used to say. Get well soon Mark. 👍
All good Mark thank you. Video was recorded awhile ago
There are seven guards, , in seniority, The Lifeguards, The Blues and Royals, Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh, even though King's troop RHA are present they are not guards but ceremonial troops, you can spend your whole career in Kings troop.
Mesmerising drill!
Wonderful!
From the state of New Hampshire, USA
Awesome
Each and every one professionals,no conscripts. They do it because they want to.They take absolute pride in what they do,they love it,love their King,Country and people...God bless them all.....God save the King....!!!!!
This ia of course now archaic, but the British Armys ability to maneuver and maintain position was vital in its battle victories for centuries.
Thanks for doing this one Mark, it shows the amount of discipline and practice that goes into these Troopings. (Also, as a side note, the Spin Wheel of the Massed Bands during the Trooping down the ranks isn't written down anywhere, it's passed on by the Garrison Sgt Majors)
Oh, and during the Quick march, the outer right flank of the formations are marching on concrete whereas the mid/left are on gravel, so it's a balancing act by the outer troops to keep in step. At least during the change to quick time and final left forms.
Thank you SomeBloke
@@Someloke8895 That's what I love, as if it isn't hard enough already there's just an extra detail for some of the soldiers to deal with.
@@danpearce4547 Indeed, the last Grenadier Guard troop (I think it was 2019) - the Subaltern of the Escort forgot to order a Change of arms before the Slow March/Escort/Trooping (It's after the Royal Salute on receiving the Colour). You visibly see him grimace and say "shit" - My former room mate, an Ex-Coldstreamer laughed so hard.
Edit, found it. 2014 Trooping. ua-cam.com/video/djYI5J54I0w/v-deo.html& 47:20
This is why and how I learn about these things. Love this thank you
Now you want the to watch the Cavalry and Kings Troop Artillery horses and WW1 Guns
Hi mark I was lucky enough to be in the audience to whiteness this spectacular show, to see the parade from the stands you have to enter a ballot for tickets and they only cost £30 worth every penny most of the soldiers were very young but did not put a foot wrong
Awesome Ann-marie Lewis
I did that for 17 years ex coldstream guards 💂♂️
Coldstream buttons in 2 s second senior regiment
Awesome
What you're watching Mark is 18th century battlefield drill -
Although the Foot Guards uniforms look the same, there are differences to look out for. The badges on the collars denote the regiment, as do the placement and number of buttons on the front of the tunic. You will have also noticed the differences in the coloured plumes on the sides of the bearskins.
Each regiment also has its own unique slow and quick march music.
“The Colour” was shown or “trooped” through the ranks so that Guardsmen could recognize and rally to it during the heat of battle.
A truly amazing spectacle of history, tradition and respect.
Get better soon mark have a good exmas and new year
All good now thanks Elizabeth. Merry Christmas
It wasn't actually the full parade as it didn't cover the actual trooping of the colour or the march past by the cavalry and guns. And remember that not only do the Guards drill for formal parades but are the best fighting troops in the world (apart from all the other British Regiments)
yes the slow march is hard, i done a few parades but not like that we also had SLR rifles which was also a different salute to what they do now,,i always liked being in the middle because if you mess up your not noticed like at the front
Two others you could look at are 2020 and 2021 from Windsor Castle during the height of the Pandemic and our very long lockdown the Queen still went ahead with this for her official birthday albeit slimmed down and everyone socially distancing
Lovely
Hello Mark, I’d already seen this many times (I always record the Trooping the Colour) but never tire of watching so watched your video too! As someone else mentioned for the actual Trooping tickets can’t be bought, you can enter your name into a ballot for tickets which I did for this year’s Trooping but had no luck. BUT, although there are rehearsals elsewhere, there are two full dress ‘Reviews’ held on the two Saturdays before the final one (with the Monarch present , the fly past, Royal family appearing on balcony of Buckingham Palace and being televised). Th first Review is the Major General’s Review, the second is the Colonel’s Review and both show the entire event minus the monarch and television coverage. This year, 2023, I visited the site where tickets can be purchased (you don’t know exactly when tickets will be available) many times and did manage to get two for the second Review (Prince William in attendance as the Colonel ). I was elated as I’d wanted to see for many years. The ticket cost was only £15 each, but it’s getting them! I was so glad I had made the effort, it was so enjoyable and I had a wonderful day which I won’t forget 😊
Awesome
you should check out His Majesty's troops in tropical uniform at Duntroon. very very smart inded.
Such a pity you do not see the Royal Artillery at the Trooping. For some reason it is cut off
see some of the WW2 footage of soldiers marching Mark, quite impressive.
Thank you for watching with us.
@Grumpy Nanny Hey that's my line. LOL
Those drills are very very very difficult to carry out. I've tried it many times and 9 times out of 10 fooked it up.
Should try it in December when it's fucking belting down mate 🤣
@@swiftyblueredblue715 Hahahaha no thanks, I'll leave it to the pro's, Brother.
@@dazza9326 If it ain't raining, it ain't training as they say. 😂 it's good to look back on though. I did 2012 and I'll never forget it. It's worth every second of practice. No better feeling
Done three 86,87&89 with 2SG, never done the escort would have liked to have done one.
It looks extremely difficult
Best bit is when the Household Cavalry do their parade...always after Guards ...you can see them waiting at the back......the walk isnt too bad...but lordy lord....if its been dry the dust from the trot is horremdous....the air is just full of dust and everyone is trying to 'rise above it all...keep dignified!' But its not easy when your covered in sand ...its hilarious...if its been wet ....splat!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and to add insult to injury just as youre getting sand out of your eyes the Royal Horse Artillery come by...and any semblance of looking glam and dignified has gone.....you just give up!😶 watched my son do the Troop years ago ....most family go to the full rehearsals weekends before..theres 3 ...or 4 cant remember....literally whole thing completely...The Colonels Review is last rehearsal when salute is taken by No.2 Prince William these days. Used to be Prince Charles ..the boys are so proud. I love it. Love the Irish Pipers too....lovely to see them in their green and gold. ...seriously though anyone invited...take a visor in readiness for the Cavalry.🤣🤣🤣🤣 other women may stare and laugh....but....after the ride past of all the mounted regiments you will get the last laugh😁😁😁
Awesome
The Button formation catches me out sometimes so I go by the Colour of the Plume in the Bearskin cap White = Grenadier Guards, Red = Coldstream Guards, None = Scots Guards, Blue = Irish Guards and finally White & Green = Welsh Guards
That's strange. I easily remember the buttons but can never attribute plumes correctly.
@@johnfernleigh1352 I use the insignia on the tunic collar as well
mark though the Coldstream Guards are the No 2 guards they always form up on the far Left of the line unless the Trooping there Colour the rest in order
Guards foot regiments Colour of the Plume buttons parings Slow /quick marches
Grenadier Guards, White = in 1s Scipio / British Grenadier
Coldstream Guards, Red 2's Figaro'/ Milanollo
Scots Guards, None = 3's The Garb of Old Gaul/Highland Laddie"
Irish Guards Blue = 4's Let Erin Remember/ St Patrick's Day"
Welsh Guards White & Green = 5's Men of Harlech'/ Rising of the Lark
@@Pardus_1970 Yes, good point. Close up the collar insignia are always clear. At a distance it is plumes or buttons.
Irish Guards this year.
Hey, Mark, do you think that you are the only one getting the button formation wrong? I'm English and still get confused, (BTW. I do hope that your voice improves!).
Lol Mik. All good now as this was recorded awhile ago
Pssst. It's FREE from street level. You have to book tickets to watch from the seats. It should be pointed out that the parade ground slopes forward and down to one corner, not to mention up and down, and up and down all the way across. And it's covered in sand.. Nightmare. It's worth watching the two Troopings they performed at Windsor Castle (socially space :)) during Lockdown 2020 and 21. Same quadrangle as used for Prince Philip's funeral, and the Queen's and for greeting President Biden.
Very nice thank you
This annual event shows the difference between UK and US forces. The UK forces march while the US forces walk. I'm surprised Trump did want the same for his birthday, maybe he will when gets back in the White House for life in 2024.
LOL
There is still the bit with horses that go past you would of like that.
Good parade voice ..eh bark today Mark. I'll get the papers and you can sign up! LOL
@JJ. 😆
This was a specially longer version of Trooping the Colour specially for the Queens 70th Jubilee. She was too ill to attend so Prince Charles took her place. As you saw that was him on the horse with Princess Anne.
Yes the whole thing is interesting and can see why many people want to attend
A lower standard than the usual for me. Gone most yrs in the last 52yrs, always a good day out. Irish guards trooping in this clip
🇵🇹👍🏻💚❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸
Herewith the full ceremony from Buckingham Palace and back with the foot guards, Royal Horse Artillery and the Household Cavalry and Blues and Royals. ua-cam.com/video/-zDyl7XF4y8/v-deo.html
wow that is a long one...Thank you Frank
I remember one BBC commentator years ago announcing, in typical British style…”and with the smoothness of a Rolls Royce, the guards break into quick time”.
It's only 1/2 of the ceremony.. ?
English Mik 🇬🇧
Do you not have anything like this in the USA? Independence Day for example. Or Veterans Day, when the President says thank you on behalf of the people, to the military.
Yes but it's not a national thing where everyone watches... It should be. Memorial Day weekend is a huge vacation holiday and most are not around a TV. Kinda sad really
4 July is definitely more celebrated
Tis video has totally missed the focal point of the entire ceremony, for it only covers the general march-past, The focal point is when THE COLOUR is presented to the troop, which is then paraded past the regiment as whole. Only when that is done does the march-past begin, with the Colour Party leading. What a shame you missed the best part!!
Each year, one of the Household Guards Regiments presents their Colour to the Monarch, and this year (although I haven't seen it all) looks to be the Irish Guards. A full description of the unit is usually broadcast, so that you know who the lucky subaltern has been selected to carry the Colour.
From what I did see, it must rank as the worst Trooping of the Colour I've ever witnesses in 60+ years, with out-of-step guardsmen, and the worst "straight lines" - more like doglegs, It was painful to watch. Neverthess, as a spectacle, the most important part is missing.
You sound dreadful. Take care of yourself Mark. x
All good thanks Maureen. Video was recorded awhile ago
Hi Mark, don't miss the first Birthday Parade of HM King Charles III coming soon.
I will look for it. Thank you
