Thank you for this video, Father.
The U.S. state of Michigan was the first to abolish the death penalty after two instances in the 1800s. In the first, a Detroit native living and working across the border in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was convicted of murdering a fellow boarder in the boarding house where he lived. He was executed, and nobody thought much of it, other than that it was a just punishment. But then another boarder, on his deathbed, confessed to the crime. The wrong man had been put to death. This shook up Detroiters.
Soon after this news, a man in Detroit was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife while he was in a drunken rage. There was no doubt that he had committed the crime, and crowds showed up to view his public hanging, but they were stunned at his remorse and repentance. He quoted Scriptures on repentance, accepting his just punishment, praising the just God and expressing contrition for his sins. The crowd was so moved by his repentance that they demanded a stay of execution on the spot, but the proceedings continued. The crowd turned into a mob, storming the gallows to free the man, but the sheriff responded by dropping open the door in the gallows, breaking the man's neck immediately. The mob then rioted.
Not long after this, the State of Michigan drafted a new state constitution that removed the death penalty. It was accepted by voters statewide. We've never had one since, and our violent crime rate was never higher than anywhere else -- one of the first proofs that the death penalty doesn't act as a deterrent to crime. On the contrary, states with death penalties often have higher violent crime rates, suggesting that a culture of death leads to increased violence.
Today, there are Michiganders calling for a death penalty, but they're misled by the spirit of revenge, I believe. I have to keep pointing out the statistics that counter their arguments, and talk of the culture of life vs. the culture of death. Most, though, do not support the inclusion of a death penalty in the state. Also, it should be noted that the Federal Government allows the death penalty, and when people are convicted of capital crimes in Federal courts located in this state, the death penalty has been imposed -- but it's rare. My hope is that the Federal Government will return to the ban on the death penalty as serving no useful purpose.

Haha, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" is a great line, but it was written by the script writers of 1982 movie Ghandi. The man himself never said it. (Though he undoubtedly said many things with the same message)

Whereas it can be justified in rarest of the rare case but death sentence should never be taken as a natural remedy for "revenge" as you've rightly said it!! I'm sure we can dig more to this considering the Church's history and how it had dealt with heretics.. but that is a different subject altogether.. !! By the way Fr, it is always wonderful to hear from you.

Premson Maring it isn't revenge. The state, acting as a neutral party, renders it

Thou Shall Not Kill is one of the 10 Commandments. Most civilized countries have abolished the death penalty and remember also that man is flawed therefore prone to making mistakes...

MB Minto With all due respect, the commandment states not to MURDER. There's a major difference between that and a government responsibility to justice

There are too many unjust laws and too much unjust applications of the law. Man and especially the state are not capable of being just as it relates to the death penalty. Yes rule of law is important to protect society, but death isn't necessary to accomplish that. Imposing death has nothing to do with protecting others. Death does not protect any better than imprisonment. So it's offensive even to ask whether the criminal has repented or not. That doesn't matter. Governments aren't religious states and they shouldn't be. Man isn't in the position to determine whether you live or die. What happens to your life and soul is for God to decide. How to prevent crime and protect individuals is for the government to decide.

Capital punishment should be banned in all cases! No excuses! A true CHRISTIAN doesn't ever support this crime!
