@oncexist I'm not sure I understand precisely what you mean by "phasing", but a clavichord is unique among keyboard instrument in that the player has the ability to add a true vibrato (bebung) by changing the pressure on they key.
@tubastuff by phasing I mean that IIIEEAAOOWW that occurs with every low note. For example if you play E on the pedal it is still E all the way at first it is bright and as it decays it becomes murky (this happens to many instruments albeit in a fundamentally different fashion and much less apparent than here).Hold an Ahhhh on a steady pitch, hold your palms at your ears in a shell position with the palm (finger) at the back of your ears, cover and uncover your ears, that's phasing.
@oncexist I think that's mostly due to the construction of the mechanism. Damping felt is present between the tangent and the tuning block. I suspect that a tangent dividing a string into a sounding and non-sounding parts is not particularly efficient at low frequencies and the upper harmonics get damped rather quickly. Just a plausible explanation, not a certainty.
This instrument's timbre (along with the natural reverb of the instrument and the room in which it was recorded) is extremely well balanced. Dick, you are a fine craftsman. The clavichord's (and especially its pedal register's) phasing (the trait which makes it goes wow-wow) has always been for me a most characteristically expressive qualitiy of the baroque. Can anybody tell me what is responsible for this phasing? Is it the action itself and the slight raising of the string by the jack?
Very beautiful instrument. Could you tell me if the pedal had only à 16" stop or 16"+8"+8" like on the Gerstenberg ? It seem to me I heard only a 16" on your 17th century pedalclavichord
hmm... This interpretation sounds as if one used the pure Romantic phrase, as described by Hugo Riemann and other 19th century German theoreticians. All these rubati are very beautiful but they remind me of the early 20th century reception of the works by Buxtehude (Straube and others). ;)
Wonderful performance. I love the intimate sound of the clavichord, and never heard one with pedals before. The link above "about the history, playing the clavichord, etc:" seems to be dead -- can you update this? Thank you!
I see similarities in this to Bach's Toccata & Fugue in d minor. Makes sense because Bach returned to Lubeck in 1706 and started the fugue in 1707. Interesting! :41-:43 sounds like the start of his fugue.
Clavicembalo-organo, lautenwerk, clavecin de pedales, clavecin de tres teclados, y aqui un clavicordio con pedales... Esos barrocos tenian mucha imaginacion, ahora si lo he visto todo 😅
Equal temperament was considered stupid because it takes the Gap in the circle of fifths and merely spreads it out equally among all of the notes taking all of the individuality away from all the scales. Bach and others preferred a lot of pure fifths and pure thirds and artistic individuality to each scale. You don't have to temper every single interval to have equal temperament you can have it somewhat equal but better, with a lot of Purity and a lot more Beauty. That is the smarter and more artistic way according to Bach and his contemporaries. It was a higher time back then and we have fallen.
Incredible pedalclavichord. They should make more of those keyboard instruments.
The pedal clavichord is one of the grooviest instruments around.
Thank you for bringing to 21st Century this jewel instrument and the heavenly music that comes from it.
I want to make such clavichord and play it. I like the sound very much.
Handsome convincing performance of a wonderful piece.

@pstk2002 Praeludium in d, Bux WV 140....unless I misunderstood your question.
Wow! Beautiful. Thank you.

Ziet eruit als een turbo monster maar toch zo delicaat in geluid. Prachtig!
Bedankt Dick, erg mooi!
Gelukkig nieuwjaar!

Beautiful instrument!
Truly wonderful!
Wonderful
@matsuuradesune i know it very well...but this particular clavichord had a sounds similar to a harpsichord sound.

My dream is to play in this instrument

Wow! Thanks
This sounds like this can be great for a movie about 16th century spies
It's been 10 years since I've posted this at the age of 14. I'm almost 24, and my opinion still stands about the theme.

El claviciterio y el clavicordio hexagonal también?
toccata and fugue in g minor?
so an organ had a kid with a clavichord?
Why tune in meantone though?
Because in Buxtehude's time meantone was still the standard tuning.

@@Lifecomesfromwithin Of course Bach didn't probably played only in Meantone variations, but in a lot of created temperaments for the ocasion.
クラヴィコードの音はこんなもんや。ほかのんがよく聴こえ過ぎる。
Nice sonority, although the two sets of strings sound out of tune in relation to each other. Better tuned, this would sound terrific!
it sunds like a harpsichord...why?
Buxtehude yes, but what is this song? Anyone?
