How to Do a Home Finger Prick Blood Test

This guide will show you everything you need to know about how to do a home finger prick blood test.

The best time to take your test is in the morning before breakfast.
It's then best to do your home blood test on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. This will provide the most accurate results.
Doing it on a Friday, over the weekend or before a bank holiday may lead to your blood sample deteriorating.
In the 30 minutes before your test, make sure to drink water. It's best to have a glass or two so you're hydrated.
Prepare to take your blood test at home by unpacking your kit and reading the instructions.
Soak your hands in warm water for four minutes before you start. Then dry them thoroughly. This makes taking the finger prick test easier.
Now you're ready to get started.
Step One:
Open the tube and insert it into the hole of the box.
Step Two:
Wipe your finger with the swab and dry.
Step 3:
Open the lancet by twisting the cap.
Step 4:
Prick the finger tip with the lancet until it clicks and hold for two seconds.
Do not use your thumb or little finger.
Step 5:
Wipe away the first drop of blood with the dry gauze provided.
Step 6:
Keep your finger pointing down words and place it above the tube.
Step 7:
Gently massage your finger in a downwards direction.
Do not squeeze the finger tip or scrape it along the top of the tube.
Step 8:
Fill the tube to between the two black lines marked by the tube.
If you have not produced enough blood then prick your finger with a new lancet, also provided, and repeat these steps.
Step 9:
Attend your wound by wiping it and applying a plaster.
Step 10:
Put the cap back on the tube until it clicks and gently flip the tube ten times. This will allow the chemicals to mix with the blood sample.
Do not shake the sample.
How to return your home blood test kit:
Step 1:
Fill in the label at the back of the pouch provided.
Step 2:
Place the tube inside the pouch, peel back the strip and seal the pouch.
Step 3:
Place the sealed pouch into the box and place the box inside the envelope.
Step 4:
Post your envelope the same day you took the sample.
