How to tie a figure of eight stopper knot, figure 8 sailing knot

- A Figure of Eight is a stopper knot, which is easy to untie after being under load. Amongst other things, it is commonly tied in the end of sheets in a dinghy, to prevent them running out of the blocks or fairleads, so that you don't lose them out of the boat.
This knot is required knowledge for the RYA Level 1: Start Sailing course.

Very clear visuals as usual Phil, is there a `meatier/bigger` version, as my fairleads have big apertures, and sometimes the jib sheet slips through with a normal fig8?

You could try a double figure of 8 - make a bight in the rope (fold it back on itself) and then tie the figure of 8 as normal with the doubled up rope. This is also an easy way to make a loop in a rope. Just be careful though that making an extra loop could create a snag/tangle risk. Or, get both jib sheets, tie them together with a double figure of 8, and it will make a larger stopper knot whilst also tying the sheets together
