In today’s bonus video, my friend and assistant Kelly Haines Collins is joining us to teach us how to make a layer cake. Kelly is a trained pastry chef and has much more experience than me in building layer cakes.
I asked Kelly to show us the basics of filling, crumb coating, frosting, and decorating a layer cake. She breaks it down step-by-step for us and this cake is perfect for a birthday, a smash cake, or any celebration!

My aunt passed away a few months ago and she was always a great cake decorator. I thought I might take it up so that I can make cakes for events in the family now that she’s gone. Thanks for these tips!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sure she'd be thrilled that you're taking it up! Have fun with it!
As a 11 year older I really enjoyed making this cake with my mom . I really thank baker bettie for uploading a video like this .This cake even looks nice . I made it now watching this video and it was a success and it sure was delicious. I hope I can make more tasty cakes.

I used this tutorial to frost my mom's birthday cake, and it looks really good!! Thank you for the help!
That's great!
This is what I'm doing today as well! Also don't interact with the comment above mine, people have been making fake telegram accounts to try and scam people by pretending to be youtubers
@@cfnature5 Dog, that’s the real UA-camrs account 💀 that one isn’t a scam
@@lapelusa9929 there was another comment that must have been removed lol. It said that they won something and they had to message a telegram account to receive it
@@cfnature5 OH LMAO okay 👍
Thank you for making a NARRATED tutorial! I hate the countless videos accompanied by nonstop music and zero helpful hints.
True!

Now that I'm retired, I tried my hand at a few cakes which turned out ok but its the decorating that stumps me and your instructions are easy to follow- thanks!
Great job!
I'm trying to learn how to make cakes because I wanna make one for Mother's day lmao, wish me luck!
Edit: thank you all for wishing me luck! It went surprisingly well, because I've never actually made a layered cake before! She loved it!
Random person i’m making one for my mom too! good luck lol😊

I'm making a cake for spirit week at my school and I am totally clueless when it comes to frosting, tysm for the awesome tutorial
That’s why my frosting never turned out smooth Becuz the crumbs awesome tip
I’ve always wanted to learn how to decorate cakes. We had culinary arts when I was in high school but never covered decorating. I always get super discouraged bc I hate how my cakes come out. Definitely going to attempt again after watching this video.
Give it a shot! If you like it, I have two other cake decorating courses that go a bit more in depth and show a different style of decorating. betterbakingschool.com/
@@BakerBettie OMG you literally have a course for everything i've wanted to learn! Definitely gonna look into it.
My mom’s birthday is Saturday so I’m going to use this technique . Thank you for sharing this
I love how you bake it’s so pretty
And I love how you comment on the comments most you tubers never comment
Aw thank you! I try my best to respond to as many as I can. It is difficult to keep up!
Thank you for including the tip about the parchment paper inserts to help keep the cake stand clean.
I have ALWAYS wanted to be a baker! This will defenitly help me achieve my dreams ! Thank you and I'm 10! Once again thank u

I don't want to be a baker, but I bake quite often. I love cake decorating it looks so fun. I've made so many different types of cake, but I have trouble with decorating.
Thank you for not fast forwarding! This is so helpful!
Definitely needed this video, I'm currently a student in the culinary arts and as a future baker I really want to master cake decorating
I love baking and i m making my 4 years old daughters birthday cake at home this time so needed some tips on how to do it.. I think baking cakes and decorating them is an art in it self
Thanks for sharing your cake decorating for beginners.
Cake Picture Perfect... So carefully taught I caught on right away a few things I learned. Thanks Bettie & Kelly!!! You're both very inspiring!
You are so welcome!
If you don't want to use regular food coloring, the strained juice from blackberries will give a similar purple color to the frosting in the video. For the buttercream, margarine can be used if there's no butter available.
Great tip!
If you mix/stir the frosting/icing a little before u use it, it lessens the wholes on the icing on the cake.
@@haleylawson3281 ah could be also.
I really admire you guys, I found it much helped to me than i wacthed tutorial slowly and step by step, thank you!!
This is just what I need, thank you so much for your wonderful tips!! Many blessings to you 💞

Thank you so much for teaching me how to do cake decoration. This is my dream come true. God bless you!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. Not a fan of the music, but then again I'm old
Glad you found the tutorial helpful. I do all of my own video editing and I don’t claim to be good at it. It is honestly incredibly difficult for me. Someday I will be able to hire someone that is better at picking out music and editing, but for now, it is what it is.
😂😂😂😂
piping bag, more like piping sack lol love this though helps a lot
My daughters birthday is Sunday and I’m making this 🙂this was an awesome video !
My mum just got out of surgery today, so I want to make her a nice cake.
Hope she has a speedy recovery!
Aliya Nicole Thank you very much! She’s doing a bit better.
Wishing her all the best x
Nicole Sakellariou Thank you again!
I found that warming the scraper in hot water and dry it off then smooth the cake for a perfectly iced cake and smoothing with a paper towel works good too
Good tip! You can also warm it with a small blow torch.
Don't worry Bettie, you're going to be a great cake decorator. 😊😊😊
I will be making a cake for my sister for her birthday, I got all the tools I need to make the cake professionally. I've also been watching tutorials for cake decorating, the do's & don't's. Just hoping it turns out 😊
This is helpful as I am a beginner in baking a cake, grateful here❤
I always don’t know what to do to the cake to make it look pretty but like, Simple Pretty, nothing too crazy

Very helpful tutorial , I’ve watched al your videos you are amazing . Please share how to make buttercream or icing .
Do you have to do this gentle when you are putting the icing at the top of the cake?
Definitely , if you don’t the cake will crumble
Used this yesterday - looked beautiful! Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
THANK YOU!!!!I needed this and the last cake I made you could see through the icing this helped me alot thanks 😊
Im planning on making a cake for my birthday in three months and this was so helpful
This is definitely helpful. Will be making my own bday cake this year!!!
I'm so glad!
This is awesome! I’m making my nieces birthday cake and she wants Minnie Mouse and Frozen theme. I rather bake the cake and decorate it myself. Thank you for this tutorial this is really helpful
This helps alot as a beginner, thankyou
I personally thing that cooling-chilling the cake is better for a crumb coat, but I will try out the method for a crumb coat and compare, thanks this was really helpful!
This is the third tutorial I started to watch this morning. I noticed that the technique in this video frosting tutorial is great. Yesterday, I frosted my grandaughter's birthday cake it turned so bad. Some part of the side of the cake the frosting is moving away from the cake because it does'nt stick. Good I found your video and I'll try your technique how to frost a cake. Mam, what's the reason why some of my frosting does'nt stick in my cake? Please help me. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in this kind of job. ♥️ and God bless 🙏.
I am learning for my mom dad's anniversary thank you for such awesome video

Thanks a lot dear am from Uganda 🇺🇬
I don't have either of these supplies but I hope to hit the thrift store soon!!
Can you recommend an easier or beginner friendly 3 layer cake recipe if I'm just wanting to practice doing the decorating part? I see that the cake recipe used in the video is for an intermediate level.
You said this is for beginners!!! I could never do this
This is honestly one of the best tutorials I’ve seen on layered cakes. The tips are so helpful!!
Ooo I’ll be watching this video again on Sunday! I’m making my mum a birthday cake! What colour theme should I do it? White and Blue / White and Yellow / White and Green
Have fun with it! Hmm... I vote for white and yellow!
I love the fact that the video is very detailed 👌👌
Love this decoration so much, pls hw many packs of icing sugar was enough for this cake decoration
You'll need about 3-6 cups for a 3 layer cake depending on your recipe and how much you use.
@4:42 you say to hold the scraper at "about a 45° angle." If its straight up and down, that is a 90° angle. Are you talking about the orientation of the scraper to the flat surface beneath the cake or hold it at a 45 against the side of the cake as you turn it?
Wow, I'm so impressed. So beautiful and easy. We'll done.
Thank you!
I want to be a Baker when I grow up and I think this is really going to help I am 9 years old and thank you if you are reading this 😁😁
You can do it! Keep practicing!
I wanna bake a cake for the first time, hope this will help. Thank you
well if you wet a paper towel and fold it and then put it in a folded foil then wrap it around your Kate Tim you will find your cake won't burn around the outside and instead stay fluffy and white
Thank you for this video, i really love cooking and baking and I want to learn how to make a cake
You are so welcome!
Cutest cake ever!!!❤
Question? Why do you level off the cake layers? Could you not have done the parchment with a dot of frosting to hold in place, then frost the layer? What pans did you use and what cake mix? Seems to me you could have used the third layer flipped from the pan with the bottom side up. It looks beautiful with the star flowers on the top! When you scrape the sides too close you should put a marzipan or fabric ribbon around the "seam". Looks good! Dig in?!
By leveling the cakes you create a flat surface when stacking. If you didn't you would have a dome shape in the middle of your cake.
Yes, you can use a dot of frosting to keep it on the parchment. The recipe for the cake and full tutorial is linked in the description box.
Thank you so much for this beautiful tutorial! I wanted to makw my mom cake and this helped me alot!
You are so welcome!
Omg thank youuu I’m making a pink strawberry cake for my step-mom and I don’t really know how to decorate a cake!
Have fun with it!
The frosting looked a little dry. Hard to spread kinda, but a beautiful cake.
Hi there! As mentioned in the video, this is american buttercream which does tend to crust over as it is exposed to air. For a smoother frosting you can use a swiss meringue or italian meringue buttercream which is linked below. However, since this is for beginners I wanted to use the easiest frosting there is to make (american buttercream) to show it can be done with it.
@@BakerBettie
Trust me. I AM a beginner too. I didn't mean any harm about the frosting looking dry. I'm a true beginner!😂🤣 Thanks for this upload!
Do you use the icing you scraped off with crumbs for the sides too?
Very helpful and informative! Thanks for making this video!!
Glad you're enjoying it!
Good teaching ,i bake tasty cakes ,but still struggling with cake decor,i would like to know where you buy the butter cream u used for Decoration
This is homemade American style of buttercream. You can find the recipe linked in the description box or at BakerBettie.com
I’m making a unicorn cake for my daughters 4th birthday. It’s going to be a vanilla cake with 3 layers, in between the layers blueberry filling and for the outside icing strawberry cream cheese icing. Hope it comes out good!
That sounds delicious! She will love it!
Thin out your buttercream with a little milk or water to get a smoother finish
Really excellent video. Thank you.
Thank you Earl! Glad you liked it!
Thank you sm, planning to bake a cake for my moms bday
I’m trying to do a home made cake for my sons birthday.. I found a recipe I wanted to use for the icing that has cream cheese in it bc buttercream is usually too sweet for us… do you think it will be hard to frost with?
Try Fantasia Fondant, you won't regret it. It is a very forgiving fondant with a long work time, which makes it easy to work with for beginners and pros. Fantasia Fondant is formulated with elasticity making it a high performing fondant when covering cakes or performing in silicon cake molds. The colors of Fantasia Fondant are vivid and fadeproof. This fondant will not prematurely dry, crack, tear, break and 'elephant skin.' Offers a less sweet taste that resembled a homemade marshmallow fondant.
Amazing I've always wanted to frost my cake neater
This cake looks So Good !😂, I am going to try this for Thanksgiving desert 😂, Thankyou for your video 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Your video is very helpful for me because im learning to bake
Waww everything is really beautiful! ❤️👌
I’m here cause I’m making my own birthday cake and just got some tips from my aunt
This video is amazing. I'm 7 years old. Can I use royal icing ?
Hi, you would not want to use royal icing for cake. Royal icing is used for decorating cookies because it gets very hard. You want something softer like buttercream to go with your cake.
@@BakerBettie Thank you for your advice
Any thoughts on how to use frosting without a turn table?
I have a question I’m a 16 year old applying for a cake decarotor job but I don’t have a lot of experience do they teach you that type of stuff when you start the job or do you have to know before you get the job?
I definitely çant wait to try making this cake!!
Go for it!
do you need to cover the cake to put it in the fridge when you let the icing firm up?
No! You can just put it right in!
How long do you put the cake in the fridge at crumb coat stage?
Nice tutorial
