Calypso Showcase Growling Tiger Part 1

Alvin Daniell interviews Neville Marcano, the "Growling Tiger", one of the early vintage calypsonians at his home in Port of Spain, Trinidad. This is the first of a two part interview in which Tiger accurately describes some of the early events in Calypso history.

This is pure gold 🏆!!!! Uncle Alvin Daniell, I know you have done Calypso Showcase from 1992-2000. You have probably hundreds to thousands of shows to upload to UA-cam.... Take your time Sir. These are artists you don't hear their music/ their work in Trinidad any more, not even on the radio station that is supposed to support the art form Wack Radio 90.5 FM in Trinidad. I personally have nothing against Soca (it is just not my cup of tea). But unfortunately the ones who rule things now are Machel Montano- "Too Young To Soca" (1986), "Big Truck"- 1997 Road March, artists like Fay Ann Lyons- Blue Boy (Super Blue's) daughter, Destra Garcia... When artists in the 1960s' were complained that Calypso was a dying art form- artists like Lord Shorty (1941-2000) & Maestro came out with the new musical expression Soca in the 1970s'- during Black Power (1970) & the Oil Boom (1973). Unfortunately, Lord Shorty (by the 1990s' he was known as Ras Shorty I) condemned Soca music.. Alric Farrell- Lord Pretender (1917-2002) condemned the music complaining the artists are not using the rhyme scheme... I have seen & I own a copy of Calypso Dreams (2004), a wonderful documentary- if you want the story on Calypso & Soca music. Your show Calypso Showcase, not only showcases the artists & their music, but it tells the history/culture/heritage of Trinidad & Tobago. Good luck uploading these shows- so far everyone is First Class.....
