Sound Designing the Unseen Character
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2016
- For the month of October RocketJump FRIGHT School releases spooky, horror-themed filmmaking tutorials!
In this video, Kevin goes over his approach to creating an unseen character or monster through sound design. Whether you're creating something funny or scary, there are a lot of factors to consider and communicate, including tone, location, physicality, proximity, and character intent.
But we want you guys to create your own unseen horror to terrorize Joey! Click on this link to head over to the official discussion for this video to download the scene:

Ready to sound design but don't have any sounds? Check out this other forum post where we discuss different sound resources that are available:

And, for the rest of October 2016, our original RJFS contact mic recordings are available and FREE for you to use! Download them here: j.mp/RJFSSounds (They'll be gone Nov 1st!)

Always excites me to see how a film or scene comes together. I've researched a lot on imagery, the lighting, colour, mis en scene & how they can effectively communicate the creator's story. However I feel none come close to how good sound design profoundly & immediately gets a message across. It connects on a more deeper, primal level that gets all sorts of signals firing in your brain without you realising..../rave
This is one of the most important topics in movies. I am glad you guys made it
Please expand on this subject please! I think it is quite important but people don't pay much attention to sound design!
Loved the video by the way
Man, I have REALLY been thinking about this aspect of filmmaking for my amateur project. Great GREAT pieces of info!! Thanks a bunch!
Thank you once again Kevin & RJFS!
Even in just small tutorial, you guys rocked the sound designing part, it was a great experience listening these sound designs.
This was so incredible and educational.
Great video! You guys always teach us so much.
Good job kevin...! Great info...!
any words, written messages or actions that threaten bodily harm, death, damage to real or personal property, or any injury or death to any animal belonging to that person.
Haha love the Freddie figure in the background again!
Horrifically amazing 😉
Well, I have my sound design of this scene done... But unfortunately I can't seem to get signed in to the forums... So i guess no-one will see it. Darn.
U can use darkness to create depth
the horrors of war
the horrors of the unknown
The horror of Violence
It could be from a dangerous animal for example
Jaws for the first 60 minutes ish. Very Hitchcock.
It can be from a character that brutalizes and stalks its prey which is simply terrifying.
Background sound can be in darkness which can pump fear affectively off
Tone is it a funny scary movie is it
dark and disturbing
Intent
It can be a super natural
A monster
You can use sound to show how the monster is feeling and what that monster wants
Proximity is just closeness it can be breathing
You may hear clothes or grass foaling foot steps
Tension u can add lots of different sounds
Add layers
U can put them together
Frequently
High pitch sounds
* Birds chirping.
*
* A child's squeal can bring up fear
*
*
* Women's voices.
Deep sound is more fretaning bigness hugness
Scary movies can have different tones, including 1 2;
* Dramatic: A film with a dramatic tone centers around conflict, realistic emotion, and heavy themes.
* Suspenseful: A suspenseful tone creates anxiety and anticipation about a specific outcome, as seen in many horror films.
To create a bleak tone in visual horror media like a short film or a webseries, you can use dim, blue-ish lighting, quiet or no music, creaking floorboards, whispers, whistling wind, zombies groaning, or any sights or sounds that make the setting depressing and eerie 2

OMG thank you so much, Me and my sister just filmed something like this with an "unseen" monster and we've had the footage for a week not knowing what to do with the sound. RJFS if you can read this thanks so much! PS love u Kevin
That's awesome to hear! I'd love to watch what you come up with once you get sound in there. Hope the video provided some inspiration for your project!
awesome
The Rocket Jump forums are great but I logged out one day and couldn't sign back in, and each time I try to create a new account it won't recognize the password... has anyone else had a similar problem?
Have you tried the usual password reset stuff? If you're still having issues, shoot a message to support@rocketjump.com !
Kevin Senzaki NEVERMIND - I got it to work, finally. Thank-you anyway!

Can I use your provided scenes for my own sound design showreel? I will put in the credits and original purposes(to be used in your forum) in the description of course.
Sure; that sounds great! Would love to see (hear) what you come up with when you're done!
Thank you!! I'd love to share on your forum and get some reviews and opinions whether my sound design is good enough or not when it's done!
Awesome - looking forward to hearing what you come up with!
I Did my own but for some reason i cant sign into my account on the forums! I tried resetting my password and everything. it says my credentials aren't recognized?
RocketJump Film School thanks for helping me out!
Where can I find the sound effects you use?

How is the scary hit done ??? Where it goes black
There's no one way to make that kind of hit, but there's two broad techniques that are used a lot: layering and processing. Layering's just combining different elements together to build up the overall effect you want (say, a higher-pitched sound like a metal screech or flame whoosh, paired with a lower rumble like a shaking file cabinet, etc.). Processing is applying effects to an element or multiple elements to transform and shape the sounds (like reverb/echo, or different kinds of distortion). While I don't remember off the top of my head what I used in that exact hit, I believe it's a piano string pluck with some guitar pedal distortion on it, plus a delay effect (giving it that eerie echo quality). Some professional libraries of hits will come with "construction" folders that give you isolated elements, and it's interesting how they're pretty much all just built out of a few fairly mundane sounds, just pieced together and processed to sound cool!
