Back in the day marathoners used to race quite often at short distances. Ron Hill, towards the end of his career reckoned that the better he raced at short distances the better he would go in the marathon itself. Top runners today race far less often that runners of yesteryear. The weekly race was common for many runners - it just took the place of a hard training session. Another of Ron Hill's quotes is that "running is running and I could never push myself as hard in training as in a race"
I think it keeps you from getting rusty to. Coming from a boxing background, I fought much much better when the gap between matches was small and consistent. So when the competitions came, I felt ready already.
Ron Hill was also known to train through illness and injury, almost refusing to rest. Tim Noakes, in the Lore of Running, wonders whether Hill could have achieved more if he'd trained smarter...
@@greenpenguin3154 How many UK men run 2:09 as Ron Hill did in 1970 - while holding down a responsible fulltime job in the textile industry? Bill Adcoks still holds the course record for the classic Marathon to Athens race. Take away advances in shoe technology and the significant sponsorship that top UK runners receive these days and yesterdays men were NOT slower than today's runners.
@@krruns4165 I've got Noakes' book on the shelves at home, very interesting read. Ron Hill would not have agreed with Noakes, he says in his autobiography, and several interviews over the years, that he feels his approach - twice a day, once on Sunday - was essential to his best performances.
good for you to race simply because you like racing...and a 16 min effort will certainly only help your marathon training. I train for longer mountain races, but I also run 5k and 10k on the road because they are fast and fun. my aspirational 5k goal for this summer is sub-19 mins...its amazing to me how fast you guys run...
Congrats! Impressive result for a race on tired legs 🙂! Must be a confidence booster for your upcoming marathon. Re your idea to use plant watering bottles for hydration: kudos for your creativity and ingenuity. But, just a minor thought (I work on food safety): are they food grade (e.g. wine glass and fork symbol)? If not, they may contain harmful chemicals that can migrate excessively into the fluid it contains. Perhaps not an issue if you use them just for the race (although taste can be affected), but perhaps useful to keep in mind if you start using them more consistently...
Philly! I have a daughter named Phyllis. I Love your personality and additude! And I'm so glad you survived Oregon and that you've come back! I'm 67 and have Metabolicy Disease, I've been doing Virta Health Reversing Diabetes protocol for almost 2 years. No Carbs for us! I'm now Fat Addapted!
Brilliant, Phily! I'm only starting out running again- 1.5 miles, 4 times this week, but I find your videos so motivating. Good luck with the impending marathon!!!
Keep bringing the joy and enthusiasm in running , that is why I love your channel ! Keeps inspiring us mere mortals to get out the door and stay healthy.
It was such a fab event at Odd Down. Glad to have very briefly met you there, and hi to Dan who I did have a good natter to at the start line. Although I went out in the first wave it was still great to race in such fast conditions. Good luck with your marathon!
Hey phily love the vids I'm quite new to running, keep getting niggles that put me out for a long time each time. I never really know how to warm up before or what sort of stretching to do after I just put something together but would be nice to have a routine. Reckon you could do a video on the drills you do before your running and stretches you do after?? Cheers nick
That was awesome. I'm not sure if it is PC to say this or not, but I've noticed that your legs seems to be more muscular now. I don't know if that's a biproduct of training for a Marathon or joining the NB Running Team and going on all those training session trips. Great job coming in 3rd.
What brand of glasses are those? Also been thinking about getting those NB Fuelcell shoes for my first marathon in a few weeks, did you like running in them? Great video too 🎉🎉
It's not the point that he pb'd in the 5km ... The London marathon is their main goal, so it can only be judged as fine or not after their marathon. Let's hope they both race their marathons well. I'm sure different strategies will suit people
Man, I envy anyone who can rock up on race day and slap on a number and go. Ive gotta do it the night before and if it isnt perfectly centered im fully triggered.
A taper is a period depending on the athlete (1-3weeks) the volume of weekly training is reduced or tapered usually from peak week of training. A 2 week taper can be a reduction of 20% total volume week 1 followed by a further reduction of 40% total volume in week 2. Personally a 10 taper works best for me. Taper seems to be an individual thing based on the athlete 💪

Thank you so much 🥹 i used to not use my arms properly as a kid so I’ve come a long way!
I'm loving your videos Philly and they always inspire me to get out and run and train properly!

Keep bringing the joy and enthusiasm in running , that is why I love your channel ! Keeps inspiring us mere mortals to get out the door and stay healthy.

Awe! Philly you had a young admirer! That girl will probably tell the story about how she met one of her running heroes, and how you inspired her!
Congrats, rapid time and looked a fun race! Sorry about your bud and then having to get on a Ryanair seat. Good luck at altitude and safe travels!
Loving the new new balance kit phily
Its basically a "5k test training run" we do that! love your work!
Love to bottles!! They’re the same one we use in my biology lab for ethanol to wipe down the lab benches!! A truly multifunctional object
Well done!!.. Yr videos go in so fast I love them!!.. 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️What Garmin do u have?.. Im looking to upgrade from F45....x
Well done Phily! Would be interesting to see how far you were off from 2nd and 1st
Well Ciara won it in 15:24… so I was miles behind her! 😅
Love you and your videos so much!! ❤
Those marathon legs did a great job, congrats on your race and on getting a session done afterwards!

Have you done the EK pace on Coros? The flash, Sprinter and Track Star ones I mean.
It’s also a good speed/critical velocity “workout” -the 5K is👍
Great video, really enjoyed it 👍
Awesome running 🎉
I think your best video. Very engaging and enjoyable. Sounds like nettle bum did you good :D
That was awesome. I'm not sure if it is PC to say this or not, but I've noticed that your legs seems to be more muscular now. I don't know if that's a biproduct of training for a Marathon or joining the NB Running Team and going on all those training session trips.

Stung bums and pooey feet haha a day in the life 😂
Class video. Is Daniel on a bike on the grass on the inside of the track? Or does he just run really fast for a quick burst? 😂😂
Well done Philly. 🎉 🏆
Great time, great race! How does Daniel film the post-race side-by-shots?! On a bike?
Yeah we brought my bike and he filmed on that with the iPhone 😊
Honestly IPhones are amazing and the only thing I use to film with when cycling, the stabilisation is in matched!
Looked like a really good race! What was your previous time last year? I think you mentioned 16:30 or something like that, great improvement if so!
Phily i already saw you did well on FOD runners channel.
Sense you have been in Copenhagen to do a marathon. Have you ever considered going to Stockholm to do that marathon?
is that a garmin watch is see there :)
It's totally fine to race a 5k in marathon prep. Look at Ben he PBd with a Marathon just around the corner.
i was thinking that 🤔
Yeah I agree, not many people do it though
It's not the point that he pb'd in the 5km ... The London marathon is their main goal, so it can only be judged as fine or not after their marathon. Let's hope they both race their marathons well. I'm sure different strategies will suit people
Not me thinking you were using perineal spray bottles 😅
Where do you get your singlets from??
"why your butt hurt?"
ehmmmmm 😂🤣
Man, I envy anyone who can rock up on race day and slap on a number and go. Ive gotta do it the night before and if it isnt perfectly centered im fully triggered.
Old school mentality is that the best form of training is racing
But you can’t race twice per week or you’d be absolutely ruined 😂
My ankles are ruined on one parkrun, a long run and a leisurely swim per week 😆
Well done!
Regarding the advert: does that mean that Daniel can catch a break and you're cooking for a change? ;)
What do you think? 😂
@@themiddlebro111 we need to find a study or paper with the title "Cooking improves performance of athletes by 30%!!"
@@ann_intube I’m writing one as we speak 😂
@@themiddlebro111 I bet chat gpt can find one for you 😂
I feel bad for your poor rear end....but it made for entertaining tv :)
🤦♀️ ffs Philly 🌱 🍑 😅 oh my god there multiplying 🐶 😂😂
What's taper? Im sorry for the question
Just means that she didn't decrease how much she is running leading up to the race.
someone who tapes, like the man behind the camera
Its like an ant eater i think???
taper is where you decrease the amount you are doing over a week usually before a race in order to have the freshest legs you can come race day.
Watched ben is runnings video and he said perfect conditions before his race someone’s lying 😭 🤔
Tbf the conditions were pretty good by the time we raced 👌🏼
Wooooooo
Daniel’s support during your run is unmatched 🥹🫶🏻
