Thank you for this I’m 5weeks 3 days post op today. Mine was in pieces, so have 2 large plates and long rod down lower arm, so I understand I must be patient. It’s still very painful with swollen hands & fingers and can’t grip, plaster off 2 weeks today. I see by your video it will take many months. I will get back in the pool next month and hope to drive too. Good luck to all others who have this very ongoing injury. Best regards

I slipped-on a wet floor and fractured my distal humerus 10 days ago. I had op the next day after fracture and now have 4 plates in and 16 screws … I am hoping for a speedy recovery but i know it is gonna take months. I am not gonna have a plaster was surprised by this decisions .. pain is constant bruises and fluids in the arm … swelling purple fingers .. how is your fracture now ! Hopefully much better ?

@@mdaatif2618 I had never achieved a good ROM only 40 extension to 90 flexion it is always blocked and cannot go further 90 degrees flexion. My bone took 6 months to fully heal towards 7 to 10 months it was getting stronger but more stiffer and range never improved. Specialist advised we can remove the hardware as all was good to go. Surgery will have scare tissue removal, MUA under anaesthesia and all hardware removal. During surgery and doing the manipulation under anaesthesia my surgeon tried to push my elbow and flex it once he reached more than 90 degrees flexion he feactured my humerus bone again !! I have gone through the same thing all over again with 4 wires this time to hold the fracture and a heavy cast for 7 weeks now out of the cast my arm is a bit painfull and my ROM is too bad. Conclusion is that my elbow healed in a different shape than a normal elbow and that’s why I can have a normal range of motion ever again! Plus arthritis is starting to grow in the elbow too ! It is a very big and painful journey and now having a 4th surgery to remove the wires in 2 months and re doing all physiotherapy all over again! You might achieve better Range but that’s my case and hope yours is much better !! Stay positive and whatever you can gain back is good !!

Great information thank you. In 2018,I fell from a height of maybe 4 steps onto concrete slabs and broke my humerus bone (multiple fractures,I think the surgeon said, and broke my wrist. Got plates in both joints. Arm doesn’t go straight just as explained. Can feel the wire through my skin they used to pull the metal plates closer (I think that’s what they said that wire was for). The top part of the scar is always cold. There is also a bruise like pain under my elbow that’s there all the time. Asked surgeon about that bruise like pain and I think I was told that’s it’s probably caused by the metalwork rubbing a nerve.

    Hi Dr. Richards,
I broke my distal humerus in 2017 a had a few plates inserted. The recovery over 2 years with regular physiotherapy seemed ok at best, till my surgeon suggested I need to get the plates removed as one of the screws has almost come out of the bone, and would cause problems if it fell off. So I underwent a second surgery under the same surgeon, only to have my ulnar never damaged. I discovered this only after a few weeks of tingling sensation in my right pinky and ring finger. On seeking expert opinion, I learnt that I have ulnar nerve palsy and had developed an ulnar claw, which was spreading fast. Hence, I underwent a third surgery (under a plastic surgeon) in March 2020, to have my ulnar nerve drafting done. It’s been almost 9 months. I see some improvement but overall I have loss of strength, 10-20 degree bent in my elbow, and, a continued inability to move my middle and ring finger away from each other ( like forming a V). My plastic surgeon says things will improve and ultimately we can do a tendon transfer, but I’m not sure.
I’m fortunate to be able to do daily activities like driving, typing, bathing, etc without any difficulty, but I can’t write the same way. Moreover, this injury has left a deep psychological effect on me - I keep asking myself if I’ll ever be normal again. I was a Squash player, and now I can’t even lift my arm properly.
Is there a solution to this? Please help! If need be I will come to America from India for surgery.
    Thanks,
    Vivek

I couldn’t get a cast and anything to hold it so that it wouldn’t get stiff or stuck. I can’t bend my arm upwards at all. I’m getting to where I can make it as straight as possible. @@marcellorigatone5673 just seeing this. It turns out I had 2 screws and 3 plates. I had to have a second surgery because my arm was not progressing in terms of bending. I still couldn’t touch my face and hold a cup to my mouth even. After surgery, this was fixed but I still lost about 25% of my upward bend. My arm hurts often, like a soreness. @@chandasyde this is EXACTLY how I was. I thought I was doing great in therapy because I could straighten my arm really well, but it’s the bend that’s most important. I couldn’t touch my face or a hold a cup to my lips. My doctor was concerned, so I had a second surgery in December. When you can’t bend you arm upwards, it means your tissue has already healed and it’s blocking you. The surgery basically allowed them to tear the healed tissue. I can now touch my face and do my hair and everything, but I still lost about 25% bend. No one can really tell though, so that’s good. Praying for your healing process!

Im 32 and i had a capitellum fracture on the lateral side of my left humerus, 7 1/2 months ago, i can get full flexion and i am at about 10° extension, i feel confident i can get a little more extension with time, but it is VERY stiff and can be painful to move at times, sometimes its alot smoother, although my supinatiin in my wrist is a different story, im stil working on that though, but my biggest fear is i may be at risk for osteoarthritis and my life will be ruined, do you have any suggestions? I have heard of PRP Injections, Platelet Rich Plasma, and i think this might be my best options for osteoarthritis prevention what are your thoughts? And do you think having my surgical screws removed would help? And after some years pass, is it possible to gain full strength back?

      @@troysmith749recovery was perfect.
One month complete rest to hand no pushing and pulling motion.
Holes take 2 months to fill
After that no lifting of heavy weights upto 6 months
After that you become perfectly normal
But yes you will lose some strength of your hand.
It all comes down to quality of doctors your country has.

I crushed my arm in a work accident and had a floating elbow injury. Not much info on it, just wondering if anyone else had same injury. That was 18 months ago and it's never going to be back to normal
