M People were pure class. Some of that class came from the music. Strongly influenced by the acid jazz movement that was bubbling up at the time - but which would soon lose its way and turn into Jamiroqui - “Moving On Up” doesn’t just have one sizzling saxophone solo, it has two!!
But most of their class came from Heather Small and her extremely tall hair. Heather’s voice was previously famous as being the one on the second, slightly inferior version of “Ride On Time”, the one Black Box made when they had to re-record it after Loleatta Holloway got a little peeved they’d sampled an old acapella record of hers.
With M People though, Heather’s voice would soon become amongst the most recognizable on the planet, and Heather would have to put up with drunk random strangers coming up to her in the street and impersonating her to her face. They were never very good at it.
Heather doesn’t need your bad impersonations. She was too good for that. She sang kiss-off anthems about how she was too good for that, dumping a guy who, despite men having walked in space, can't even find her place!
Clearly the man is useless. You’re right Heather, you can do so much better.
